Cryptic clues do mean something, they're just not what they seem.

謎の手がかりには何か意味があるが 見かけとは違うだけだ

There's always one way to read a clue that will tell you what to do.

何をすべきかを教えてくれるヒントを読む方法は必ずあります。

Most cryptic clues have two parts -

ほとんどの謎の手がかりには2つの部分があります。

one part teasingly defines the solution.

ある部分では、からかうように解決策が定義されています。

The other part is a playful way to get to the same thing.

もう一つの部分は、同じものにたどり着くための遊び方です。

But which is which?

でも、どっちがどっちなの？

Is this about finding transport or boats?

交通機関やボートを探すことですか？

Let's guess it's about transport

輸送のことだと思いましょう

and see what the rest of the clue could mean.

と残りのヒントの意味を見てみましょう。

What fish do we know?

どんな魚を知っているのか？

And boats?

ボートは？

Hang on.

待ってくれ

We know what a carp-ark is.

鯉のぼりは知っている

Sometimes key words will tell you what to do.

キーワードで何をすればいいのかがわかることもあります。

Look out for anagram indicators...

アナグラム指標に注目してみてください...。

soundalike indicators,

サウンドライクな指標。

which are often phrases you just need to learn to recognise...

認識することを学ぶ必要があります。

or reversal indicators...

とか反転表示とか...。

And don't give up.

そして、あきらめないでください。

Remember, the person who set the crossword wants you to solve it.

クロスワードを仕掛けた人は解いて欲しいと思っていることを忘れないでください。
