Today I'm going to be teaching you about one of the most commonly used English proverbs.

今日は、よく使われる英語のことわざの一つを教えてあげようと思います。

You might have heard it before.

聞いたことがあるかもしれません。

Let's take a look at the board when in Rome.

ローマにいるときの掲示板を見てみましょう。

Do as the Romans do.

ローマ人のように

So what does this mean it's talking about When you go to another country, you have to adapt to that culture.

これは何を意味するのかというと、他の国に行くときは、その文化に適応しなければならないということです。

So when in Rome it's talking about ancient Italy, you don't really have to think about Italy.

だからローマでは古代イタリアの話になると、イタリアのことは考えなくていいんです。

When you use this problem, you can be in any country, any city.

この問題を使うと、どこの国でも、どこの街でも

Do as the Romans do again.

ローマ人のようにまたやってくれ

It's talking about the local people.

地元の人の話です。

You can use this for anything.

何にでも使えます。

So when do you use this?

では、どんな時に使うのか？

When can you make use of this problem?

この問題はどのような時に活用できるのでしょうか？

For example, if you go to another country, you go for the first time.

例えば、他の国に行った場合、初めて行くとします。

You find it quite hard to adopt.

養子にするのはかなり難しいと思います。

You encounter something new you might think to yourself, and you might use this problem.

自分でも思うような新しいことに出会い、この問題を使うこともあるかもしれません。

For example, when I first came to Korea, I felt quite confused.

例えば、韓国に来たばかりの頃は、かなり戸惑いました。

I was staying with my friend for the first time, and she was making me dinner.

初めて友達の家に泊まりに行った時、彼女が夕飯を作ってくれていました。

I thought, Well, that's strange.

と思っていたのですが、まぁ、それはおかしいですね。

She's not really getting up to do the dishes.

彼女は本当に皿洗いをするために起きているわけではない。

Why is that so?

なぜそうなのか？

I asked her.

と聞いてみました。

Oh, maybe when I'm in Korea and I go to a friend's house, should I do the dishes when they make me dinner, she said.

あ、もしかしたら韓国にいる時に友達の家に行った時に、ご飯作ってもらった時に皿洗いした方がいいのかな、と言っていました。

Maybe it's a good idea.

それがいいのかもしれません。

And I thought, OK, let me go and do the dishes So I was doing them and I was thinking to myself, When in Rome, do as the Romans do now we've gone over the proverb, the full sentence.

皿洗いをしていて思ったんです ローマではローマ人のようにしなさいということわざがあります。

You might find that when you hear this in daily speech used by locals, they might not say the full proverb.

地元の人が日常的に使っている言葉で聞くと、ことわざの全文を言ってくれないことがあるかもしれません。

For example, when you hear it, you might hear only when in Rome.

例えば、ローマにいるときにしか聞こえないかもしれません。

But most people will know what the rest of it means, and it sounds more natural.

しかし、ほとんどの人は残りの意味を知っているだろうし、その方が自然に聞こえる。

So I have another example.

ということで、別の例を挙げてみました。

When I went to Japan a few weeks ago, I was staying again with a friend of mine.

数週間前に日本に行った時には、また友人の家に泊まっていました。

It was evening time, and we were about to have a bath.

夕方になり、お風呂に入ろうとしていました。

She got in first.

彼女が先に入った

She finished, and she came back out.

終わって出てきた。

She asked me, Do you want to have a bath now?

彼女が「今からお風呂に入る？

I said, Yes, sure, I went in and I was about Teoh NT the Bath water because I thought, Well, it's my turn, right?

と言ったら、はい、確かに、と思って入ってみたら、Teoh NT ザ バスウォーターくらいだったので、まぁ、私の番だよね、と思って。

So she stopped me and came in and said, No, Sarah, In Japan, you're supposed to get in to save the water.

それで彼女は私を呼び止めて入ってきて、いや、サラ、日本では水を節約するために入ることになっているんだよ、と言ったんです。

At that moment, I thought, OK, that's a bit unusual.

その瞬間、OK、ちょっと変わってるなと思いました。

I'm not used to that.

慣れていないので

But when in Rome, we're going to have a look at some example dialogues to help you to understand how to use this problem better.

しかし、ローマでは、この問題の使い方をよりよく理解するために、いくつかの例文を見てみましょう。

Everyone is just pushing to the front.

Well, one in Rome do as the Romans do.
