  • -You got some big news here.

  • You just became an uncle for the first time,

  • is that right? -I did.

  • It's the first -- first grandkid for my mom and dad.

  • Shout-out to my sister Jamila.

  • Lennox Major Theus, Jordan Theus.

  • -Oh, my God. -Yeah, yeah.

  • -Have you picked out a Christmas present for him yet?

  • -I'm still searching.

  • I haven't got back to L.A. yet. I've been gone for a few months.

  • But I plan on doing some Christmas shopping

  • when I get back. -You can give him a baby book

  • if you'd like. -Oh, wow. Okay.

  • -I got this book here. -What you got in there?

  • -Well, I signed it.

  • I just said, "Uncle Mike, you will read this 1,000 times."

  • [ Laughter ]

  • Get used to reading books. -Thank you, bro.

  • -Yeah, you got to read that to the baby.

  • -Man, that's awesome. -They'll love it. Yeah, yeah.

  • No, there's only like 3 pages in there.

  • So no spoilers. [ Laughter ]

  • -I really did write it, yeah.

  • But you -- What do you call it?

  • Did you finish the rest of your holiday shopping?

  • -Well, you know what? I still have a few things I need to get.

  • And actually, you're like one of the last people on the list,

  • not to, you know, say it like that, but --

  • -Oh. I'm on the list. -I got you a little something.

  • I heard you like cupcakes, so --

  • -I do. -I got one.

  • My mom made it for you, so --

  • -Your mom made this cupcake for me?

  • -Yeah, it is. It's one of her special --

  • -This is not the rum cake. -It's the rum cake,

  • but it's a little cupcake version of the rum cake, so --

  • -Wait, talk to me about this. Your mom did this?

  • Thanks, Mom! [ Laughter ]

  • -So, my grandmother's --

  • my grandmother's famous rum cake recipe.

  • -Yes, we talked about this. -Yes. This is the one.

  • But now we teamed up with Sprinkles,

  • and they're doing this holiday, you know, batch

  • for everybody at home

  • so that you guys can order your own special -- my mom's rum cake

  • and they'll deliver it for the next two weeks.

  • A portion of the proceeds are going to Lupus L.A.

  • My mom suffers from lupus.

  • So this is kind of, like, my way to give back

  • to the lupus community, and my mom also.

  • So, yeah, congratulations.

  • -That's fantastic.

  • -Here you go. [ Cheers and applause ]

  • Let me know what you think.

  • Yeah? -That's real good.

  • -It's made with love and a whole lot of rum.

  • -There's a lot of good rum in there.

  • -You can't go wrong with that.

  • -You can go to Sprinkles and get this?

  • -Yeah, so, you go to sprinkles.com.

  • They'll deliver it. You go to your local Sprinkles store.

  • A portion of the proceeds goes to Lupus L.A.

  • -This is phenomenal. -Thank you, man.

  • -I'm so happy you remembered that.

  • Thank you for doing that. That's cool you're doing this.

  • Also, your mom makes a mean mac and cheese, right?

  • -My mom's mac and cheese is actually --

  • -I'm just setting you up for next time you come back.

  • -No, no, no.

  • You just trying to have me not be able to fit in this seat.

  • No, but my mom's mac and cheese is legendary.

  • -Thanksgiving mac and cheese, right?

  • -Thanksgiving mac and cheese.

  • She only makes it a couple times a year --

  • Thanksgiving, birthdays.

  • -So you had it this year?

  • -I actually, I did.

  • Somehow, she found a way to sneak it, like, through customs,

  • and she got it to Berlin.

  • I was in Berlin filming -- -You were in Germany.

  • -I was in Germany last three months filming,

  • and I missed my first Thanksgiving

  • in I don't know how long.

  • So she somehow figured out a way to get mac and cheese

  • and her famous meat and mac to me in Germany.

  • -See, that's -- Your mom is awesome.

  • Come on. Oh, my God. -My mom somehow found a way

  • to get a little bit of home all the way in Germany.

  • -Shout-out to all the moms out there. That's awesome, buddy.

  • I want to talk about your movie, because last time you were here,

  • we talked about you and Jamie Foxx.

  • -Yep. -"Just Mercy."

  • What made you want to tell this story?

  • -I think it's timely.

  • The story of Walter McMillian took place over 30 years ago.

  • He was a wrongly convicted person for murder.

  • And Bryan Stevenson,

  • fresh out of law school, got him exonerated.

  • And it's something that sadly is still happening today.

  • You know, honestly, when I met him,

  • I was almost embarrassed that I didn't know of his work.

  • You know, he wasn't a household name.

  • -Yeah. -So, you know,

  • I watched the Ted Talk.

  • I got a chance to know him as a person,

  • and I saw all the amazing work that he's doing.

  • And I figured, what was my way to contribute?

  • You know, as a black man in America,

  • you know, I felt a certain responsibility.

  • You frustrated when you see all these things

  • that are going on in the news and in the media,

  • all this police brutality,

  • and you struggle with trying to find a way to make an impact.

  • You struggle with your emotions

  • of how do I -- How do I address this?

  • So I used my work and my platform to be able

  • to produce this movie and put it together and tell the story

  • so as many people as possible can see this film.

  • I do feel like through

  • proximity, becoming closer to these issues,

  • we can be able to kind of close the gap

  • between the people who feel like that's not them

  • and bring that humanity to the forefront.

  • And Bryan Stevenson is an amazing person.

  • I can't wait for you guys to see the movie.

  • -It's great that you did that.

  • -And I got to say, you and Jamie Foxx have great chemistry.

  • And Jamie Foxx just crushes it in this, as well.

  • And you, too. I mean, oh, my God.

  • There's a couple scenes in there that just, like --

  • Whew. Just wreck you.

  • -It's a heavy film. But at the end of the day,

  • we want you to leave the theater with hope and optimism.

  • -Yeah. -I think Bryan Stevenson

  • is one of the most hopeful people that I know.

  • But he really believes that through art,

  • through speaking about things, through ownership of our past,

  • that we'll be able to have some real healing.

  • I think this movie is a step.

  • -It really is a great story.

  • -Appreciate it. -I'm glad you made it.

  • Did Jamie get to be funny at all, like, in between takes?

  • -In between takes, yes. -Yeah.

  • -We were dealing with such heavy material --

  • -I know, that's what I was going to ask.

  • -He was excellent at playing music

  • to kind of get us in and out of moments, you know?

  • I think we were dealing with such heavy stakes all the time.

  • You know, he would play songs to kind of set the mood for a scene

  • but then also play songs to kind of get us out of it, as well.

  • So he was definitely, you know, a big cheerleader on set.

  • Always telling jokes. He's an amazing storyteller.

  • -He's unbelievable, yeah.

  • He comes on, and I just let him go.

  • I just -- I can leave. -Yeah.

  • -He just comes on, takes over. [ Laughter ]

  • But together, it's an amazing movie.

  • You should definitely check it out.

  • -Yeah. -And thanks and congrats.

  • I want to show everyone a clip.

  • Here's Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx in "Just Mercy."

  • Take a look at this.

  • -Why you doing this?

  • -Why am I a lawyer? -No, no, no.

  • Why is you a lawyer down here in Alabama

  • taking these cases that ain't nobody gon' pay you for?

  • -When I was a teenager, my grandfather was murdered

  • over a black and white TV.

  • We kept waiting for someone to show up to help.

  • And that's when I realized that

  • outside my community, nobody cared,

  • 'cause to them, he's just

  • another black man killed in the projects.

  • I know what it's like to be in the shadows.

  • That's why I'm doing this.

  • [ Cheers and applause ]

  • -Michael B. Jordan, everybody! [ Cheers and applause ]

  • New uncle! -Uncle Mike.

-You got some big news here.
