  • Chalk and Talk by Brian Roads Brought to You by Business English pod dot com.

  • All right, let's take a look at this situation talking during the movie.

  • Imagine you're watching a video ari at the movies with your friend and you like to talk.

  • In other words, when the movies on your whispering to your friends, something like, Hey, what's happening?

  • That sort of think a little bit in polite most of the time, but you like to do it.

  • So what you have is a verb plus J errand, and then you say when it's happening.

  • So when I say I enjoy talking during movies, I like to talk.

  • I like talking when the movie is happening.

  • Now that could be a problem.

  • Maybe it's a habit of yours, and then you would use a phrase like this I am accustomed to and then plus the Jared.

  • So I am accustomed to talking.

  • Then, in other words, during the movie Now that could be a problem for your friend.

  • So your friend says to you should be quiet or when you do it too many times, shut up.

  • So maybe your friend says this or this is what happens?

  • The situation When I talk during the movie, my friend makes me shut up.

  • So we have a positive here, my friend makes me or asks me or tells me same idea.

  • But in this case, we've done a positive.

  • So my friend makes me be quiet.

  • Shut up or whatever.

  • Okay, Now these three are going to be put now into the passive and the cause it of with the Jaron combined.

  • So let's take a look at those number three again, my friend makes me shut up.

  • This is a causative.

  • So somebody, in other words, my friend, is causing me or making me to be quiet because I'm talking during the movie.

  • So here it is, my friend makes me shut up.

  • Now that cause it can go into a passive as we've looked at before in another grammar lesson and simply this goes, the me becomes the subject.

  • I you have the verb to be.

  • Plus, you have the past participle and in this case, the verb make.

  • When it's in the passive as a causative, it will have an infinitive following it.

  • Now what happens when we want to add a Jarron to this.

  • Well, let's take a look at it.

  • So I am made to shut up.

  • Has the same meaning as my friend makes me shut up.

  • And remember, this is because I'm talking during the movie which is in polite all right now a zoo.

  • We go through the one of these phrases that's followed by a Jarrah and I am not accustomed to or I don't enjoy.

  • Then you have to have a Jarron which follows these and in this case, the verb to be of the passive becomes being.

  • And then the rest of it is just the same made to shut up.

  • You can see that.

  • So I am not accustomed to or I hate or I don't enjoy.

  • All of those would have the same meaning.

  • I am not accustomed to being made to shut up.

  • Now I hope you can see where this being comes from.

  • It comes from the part of simple of the verb to be in the passive, and you know that the passive is always made up of the verb to be plus the past participle.

  • So the only thing that changes when you add this type of phrase and then you need to adjourn.

  • Is that the verb to be of the passive becomes being as a parent.

  • So here you go.

  • I am not accustomed to being made to shut up.

  • In other words, I'm not used to it.

  • I'm not used to being made to shut up.

  • I don't like being made to shut up.

  • However, I am being in polite, so I should perhaps shut up.

you're watching.
