Nothing seems much different.

特に大した違いは見受けられません。

The world is much the same as it is now.

世の中は今と変わりませんし

People do the same sorts of things, have much the same joys and pains.

人々の生活は同じようで、そこには楽しい事やツライ事もあります。

They're born, they grow up, they work, they play, have families, love, argue, enjoy their brief time on Earth.

生まれて、成長して、仕事をして、楽しんで、家族を持って、恋愛をして、ケンカをして、この地球上でのつかの間の時を過ごして

And die.

死んでいきます。

It's just that if you go to the outskirts of any town, there's a new facility there.

ただ、どの町にも町はずれに新しい施設ができていて、

It looks like a medical center.

それは医療関係の施設のように見えます。

It is, in a way.

確かに、ある意味医療施設です。

A well-designed building with nice landscaping and a free car park.

素敵なデザインの建物で、その周辺もきれいに整えられていて駐車場は無料です。

If you go inside you'll discover what's going on.

中に足を踏み入れると、ここがどのような場所なのかが分かります。

The receptionist can explain.

受付の人が説明してくれますから。

There are leaflets too.

パンフレットなんかも用意されています。

Everything is well ordered and calm.

全てが整然としていて、落ち着いた雰囲気にあります。

Doctors, psychologists, counsellors and nurses work here.

医師や心理学者、カウンセラーや看護婦がここで勤務していますが、

But so too do specialists lawyers.

専門の弁護士もここで働いています。

This is the "Good Death Centre", provided on the National Health Service.

ここは「素敵な死に方センター」で、国内健康サービス組織によって運営されています。

Those who don't want to descend into the indignity of extreme dementia, or doubt the ability of palliative care to ease their exit from life, will come here when the time is right.

人間としての尊厳が無くなる重度の痴呆に陥ったり、この世からの旅立ちを苦しまないようにするという緩和ケアの力を信じられない人が、自分の心の準備ができた時にここへやってきます。

They'll choose the moments of their own deaths.

彼らは自分で死ぬ時を選ぶわけです。

Most of us have a death plan and a living will now.

多くの人が、死ぬときの計画と生前の意思を持っています。

It's a great comfort to know that the option exists if the going gets too tough.

これ以上生きているのがツラくなりすぎた場合は、この選択肢があるというだけで心持ちが随分と楽になります。

We've had euthanasia for pets for a very long time, but before the Good Death Centres, we forced our friends and relatives to endure months and sometimes years of agony and indignity against their will.

安楽死はペット用に長い間一般的でしたが、「素敵な死に方センター」が出来る前には友人や親せきが長い間苦しむことになり、本人の意思にも反して人間としての尊厳が無くなってしまった命を必死につなぎとめているような状態でした。

For what?

果たしてそれは何のためにでしょうか？

It now seems so cruel, so unnecessary, so pointless.

とても残酷で、無用かつ意味の無いことのように思えます。

Of course there are safeguards.

もちろん、やたらと誰にでも当てはめるというわけではありません。

No one gets to use the facility without thorough psychological examination and counselling.

心理学的検査やカウンセリングを経なくては誰もこの施設を利用することはできません。

This choice is only for the sound of mind and those who have demonstrated a genuine desire to die by these means.

この選択肢というのは精神状態がしっかりとしている人のみが対象となり、このようにして死を選ぶことに対して正当な理由があると説明できる人に限られます。

You need a good reason such as a painful terminal illness or the first signs of dementia.

痛みを伴う末期症状があるとか、認知症の初期症状が見られるといったそれなりの理由が必要となってきます。

Consent has to be informed.

同意の下で実施されることが必須です。

Life is much better now.

これで人生は大分良くなりました。

It's reassuring to know you don't have to endure it even when you've lost the power to take your own life.

自分で人生を終える力すら無くなった時でも、苦しみに耐える必要がないというのは本当に大きなことです。

I have my own death plan.

私には自分の死亡計画があります。

If I don't die my sleep, I expect to die in a Good Death Centre.

寝ている間に自然死するのでなければ、「素敵な死に方センター」で命を終えたいです。

It's a comforting thought.

そう思うと気が楽です。
