  • - Don't blame your friends, coworkers, colleagues, parents,

  • or teachers for your own failures.

  • There's only one person you can blame

  • and that's you.

  • Hello, I'm Julian Northbrook from doingenglish.com.

  • Something that I hear quite a lot from

  • potential coaching clients, when I do consultation course,

  • is that, they don't often word it quite like this,

  • but essentially, they are annoyed, irritated, frustrated,

  • because they believe someone else is to blame

  • for their lack of proficiency in English.

  • One way that I commonly hear this is to say that

  • they weren't taught properly at school.

  • Their school English classes were no good.

  • Their teacher was no good.

  • Their teacher wasn't a native speaker.

  • Their teacher didn't know how to

  • get them actually speaking English.

  • Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.

  • Another way that I've often heard it is

  • people who say it's their parents fault.

  • If only their parents had given them

  • opportunities to learn English, to speak English,

  • to get good at English as a child.

  • They wouldn't of had to struggle with the process,

  • they would've just learned automatically and now,

  • they would be like a native speaker.

  • Another way that I've heard it is to say that

  • their coworkers and their colleagues and their friends

  • get in their way, they stop them from doing the things

  • that they want to do or take their time away from them by-

  • you get the idea.

  • But essentially, all of these things are saying

  • exactly the same thing.

  • It's not my fault.

  • I'm crap at English and it's somebody else's fault.

  • That, however is stupid.

  • You've got to let go of that idea.

  • Like, if you are not good at English,

  • you're not good at speaking the English language,

  • there's only one person to blame and that's you.

  • That might be harsh, and you might not like that,

  • but the reality is, is that it's true.

  • And it's also a much more productive way to think.

  • You see, if it truly is somebody else's fault,

  • and it's not, it's yours, but just hypothetically speaking,

  • if it were somebody else's fault, then you are in a position

  • where you can't do anything about the problem,

  • because you can't control other people and as I always say,

  • you should only focus on or worry about

  • things that you can control.

  • However, if it's your fault, then that is something

  • that you can control, because you can control yourself

  • and you can stop moaning and you can stop whining

  • and you can stop feeling bad and sorry for yourself

  • about the fact that you didn't already

  • master the English language.

  • Remember, the best time to have got really really good

  • at speaking English was, yeah, I mean, ten years ago.

  • The second best time is right now.

  • You can control yourself and you can control

  • your own actions.

  • So, take responsibility for your own learning.

  • Stop blaming other people.

  • It's not your friend's fault, it's not your parents fault,

  • it's not your teacher's fault,

  • if you are not getting good at English.

  • Say, you've got a teacher or coach or somebody

  • helping you with your English now

  • and it's not working out for you, well, quit,

  • go find somebody else.

  • That is within your control.

  • It is something that you can take action on and actually do,

  • but you do have to take responsibility and say,

  • "It's my fault, every decision, every action,

  • everything that happens in my life is my fault

  • and my fault alone."

  • This is, of course, the same for anything,

  • not just all of learning and mastering the English language,

  • but it is very very true of getting really good

  • at speaking English and using it in your life

  • to do whatever it is that you're trying to do.
