There are a lot of different parts to this answer

その答えは複雑で

and I hope to get to them all

いつか、きちんと答えたいけど

but today I want to focus on a specific tool

今日は一つだけの技術を

that I've been using recently to sort of

iron out the kinks in my sometimes unnatural Japanese.

The truth is, I actually feel the opposite.

実は、日本にきてから

as soon as I moved here I started learning

逆に自然というよりも

how many awkward things I actually say

自分の前から使った不自然な表現に気づいたの。

that being said, smoothing it all out

is something I've always been trying to do with Japanese

これからは不自然な表現を必ず掘り起こす。

So today I want to focus on

one specific tip that I've been using recently

最近使っていた語学のコツと

and a specific tool that I've been using

そのためのツールの一つです。

to get things smoothed back out

The tool that I've been using most recently

最近使っているツールといえば、

is an app called HiNative

「HiNative」というアプリがいいですね。

I had it originally in my American phone

もともとアメリカの携帯で使ったけど

but I never transferred it to my Japanese phone

日本の携帯にはまだダウンロードしていないので

there are a couple phrases that I've been trying to use

それから、ぜひ言いたいけど、

that I'm pretty sure I haven't been saying right

たぶん不自然だと思われるフレーズを確認したくて

and the guys from HiNative reached out to me

HiNativeからも連絡も届いたので

and asked if I would introduce it to you guys

In a nutshell, you ask a question

基本的に、言語に関連する質問を聞いて

and a native speaker will respond pretty quickly

ああ問い馬にネーティブがすぐ答える。

and let you know if what you said sounds close to native

自分がどれだか自然に話せるかを

or natural or not.

They have a huge selection of languages

so its not just for Japanese

but in my case, I'm specifically concerned with Japanese

The reason I really like this app is because

アプリのいい点というと、

its not a translation app.

直訳にならないことですね。

I find that the key to sounding really natural in language

個人的に、自然な会話力の鍵といえば、

is to forget about trying to directly translate your language

自分の母語を通訳するのじゃなくて

and by learning how to match up words

その第二言語の決まった言い回しを

the way that they usually are in that language.

勉強するのが大切だと思います。

I made a video about this almost five years ago

五年前、同じトピックを紹介しましたけど

but the word for this is actually COLLOCATIONS.

この概念は日本語で「連語」といいます。

or "rengo" in Japanese.

It's the idea that

certain words tend to always pair with certain other words

and when you fail to match up these pairs

is when you give away that you're NOT a native speaker.

So let's go ahead and get this set up

but this is basically how it is set up.

Once you log in you can either ask,

"Does this sound natural?"

"Please show me an example sentence with ~~"

"What does this mean?"

and "What is the difference" between A and B?

I first want to start out with just

"How do you say this in Japanese"...

「これは日本語でなんと言うの？」

So the first thing I want to check for is the word for frizzy hair

まず、「Frizzy Hair」の日本語を知りたいです。

Japan is about to enter into the rainy season

日本はもうそろそろ梅雨いりで

and my hair is going to explode!

この髪の毛がきっと爆発するだろう。

"My hair gets.... fluffy puffy???"

「髪の毛が・・・ふわふわ？」

"A little afro-ish" ???

「アフロっぽい？」

My hair gets really frizzy during the rainy season.

"My hair get's really frizzy during the rainy season。”

You know what i'm talking about!

女性たちは十分わかるでしょう？

(Ask!)

（質問！）

Let's go ahead and ask this...

聞いてみましょう。

Let's do another one

次は

I want to try saying this one in Japanese

自分の日本語をチェックしてもらいたいな。

and lets see if I sound natural or not

自然か不自然かを聞いてみたい。

I'm assuming "not".

本当は「不自然」に決まっているだろう。

The phrase I want to say is

私の言いたいフレーズは

"Give your dog a bath".

”Give your dog a bath"

"Let her... into the bath???"

お風呂に・・・入らせる？

"Give the dog the tub...???:

ワンちゃんにお風呂をやった？

...this is just so wrong!

これは絶対間違えっている！

Whatever, let's just see if that sounds natural

まあいいか、聞いてみよう！

One answer just came in!

So they first answered my second question

まず、答えてくれたのは

about my dog!

ワンちゃんのことですね。

He said it's unnatural!

だけど、「不自然」って書いてある！！！

Very unnatural...

とても不自然・・・

I knew that was coming. So...

そうなると思ったのに・・・

"I gave the dog a bath."

お風呂に入れてあげる・・・

Gotta keep her clean!

きれいなワンちゃんがベストですね！

Oo, and we got our first answer!

あら、一番目の質問が来た！

so, "my hair get's really frizzy during the rainy season"

"My hair gets really frizzy during the rainy season."

My hair is very curly and frizzy

とてもくらくらしているでクセ毛タイプで

apparently "kusege" is the word for frizzy hair?

この「くせげ」が本当にいいね。

My hair type is curly and frizzy

私の髪はクセ毛なので、

so during the rainy season it get's really frizzy.

梅雨の間かなり縮れてしまｊ。

To get curlier or frizzy...

縮れる・・・

Your frizzy hair gets even curlier.

癖がひどくなる・・・

Or another option is,

もう一つは

My hair is naturally curly so

私の髪はクセ毛なので、

it get's really bad during the rainy season.

I kind of like that one, like it's so bad.

OK I can remember that...

So, that's how I use it as a learning tool.

つまり、こうやって勉強します。

obviously you can ask for translations into Japanese

もちろん、直接翻訳も聞けるけど

but I prefer to try it myself first

私が自分からやってみて

and let them sort of correct you

修正してもらうのがベストです。

but with this they can tell you how natural or unnatural it was

そうすると、自分の考えたのどこがまだ不自然な

and specifically how to fix it.

It's a free service so that's really helpful
