  • - Hey guys!

  • - Hello!

  • We're gonna go without technology for an entire week.

  • - Everything that makes us functioning human beings.

  • - It'll be what it wants to be.

  • - Like in the 1900's?

  • - Yeah.

  • - Ew.

  • - I'm Dr. Kara Bagot and I'm an adult

  • and child and adolescence psychiatrist.

  • I'm an assistant professor as well as

  • Medical Director of the Addiction Institute

  • at Mount Sinai and center on addiction alliance.

  • Technology use has sort of increased over time,

  • especially during this time, during the pandemic

  • when we're all sort of indoors.

  • People are highly connected to screens.

  • We know that increasing technology use is

  • associated with depression, anxiety, irritability,

  • and that's just the normal use.

  • We can see increases in sort of

  • mental health symptoms with excessive use

  • as well as sort of withdrawal.

  • So kudos to them for taking this challenge

  • during probably the most difficult time to do it.

  • But there is still things to do.

  • So ladies, good luck to you both,

  • I hope you have a very enjoyable five days

  • and we'll see you on the other end.

  • - Day one, I think it's been going okay,

  • obviously Joyce and I vibe.

  • You have pretty cardinal!

  • - This is really (beep) dramatic.

  • (groaning in sync)

  • (laughing)

  • - I mean we busted out some hits.

  • Like you should, my neck, my back, lick my

  • - Tequila man, I mean.

  • (laughing)

  • (gagging)

  • - Then we partied.

  • We don't need technology, are you ready?

  • - I feel like I'm gonna regret this in the morning,

  • only because we have to wake up

  • and do a big activity and I'm definitely feeling

  • litty litty like a brown titty.

  • - Screen exposure leads to sort of release of the same,

  • like chemicals, the same neurotransmitters in the brain

  • that we see with drugs, some of the same.

  • When we think about what's important and reward,

  • we think about dopamine, so we do expect

  • to see some of this sort of brain related effects.

  • - So after last night of getting

  • too litty, we're still influencers.

  • - We're still influencers, we still need to get the shot.

  • - Yeah, so we're just gonna use this

  • Polaroid camera and then after that we're

  • gonna go try to get it developed?

  • - Yeah, what?

  • Looking hot.

  • Being able to immediately see how hot we look,

  • like right away and get that validation.

  • Oh yeah, see?

  • It's so (beep) easy, huh?

  • - Wait, wait.

  • - We realized we need to get them developed.

  • Joyce, you got the map?

  • - I'm tryna put my eyelash back on.

  • - Didn't know where to go.

  • - I'm still in Sacramento.

  • - Okay.

  • - Where the is Los Angeles?

  • This map is big!

  • - That's insane.

  • - This map is huge!

  • The Walgreen's store we tried on does not do development.

  • - We got rejected.

  • - We got rejected.

  • - Who the hell develops disposable anymore?

  • - I am born of the technologist age, I am the first Gen Z,

  • I don't know how to use this (beep).

  • - We had to wander around and that was difficult

  • but it was fun.

  • If I didn't have Joyce there with me,

  • I think I would have gone crazy.

  • - So we just got back from the TVS

  • and I gotta say it was a little bit of an adventure!

  • - We did good.

  • - You know I think it was a great

  • bonding experience for us, you know?

  • - So day one might be a little bit of a novelty,

  • I believe day two and day three will be

  • the most difficult for these ladies.

  • - I have been bored all day today.

  • - Day three has been rough.

  • - I need to check my phone, what if my mom called me?

  • - We hit some bumps.

  • - Yesterday we did a great job and now

  • I'm just gonna go pick up my phone.

  • - Joyce!

  • (laughing)

  • - What?

  • - What are you doing?

  • - Checking the bounciness of this wind chime.

  • - Joyce messed up, I messed up.

  • - What is this?

  • - Nothing!

  • - What is this?

  • That is for work only!

  • - No, it was just like ten minutes!

  • (beep) getting hard, I just gotta

  • get this out of me, you know?

  • So we're gonna try and meditate.

  • (peaceful music)

  • (bell ringing)

  • My neck, my back, lick my

  • Great.

  • - Thank you.

  • - Thank you.

  • - When we're supposed to be socially isolating

  • and now layered on top of that a lot of cities have curfews,

  • so you can't get out quite as much.

  • But there's still things to do.

  • They can read magazines, again in paper,

  • newspapers come in paper print edition,

  • so there are lots of things that they can engage in.

  • - We had a successful day together.

  • Joyce and I cooked together a little bit

  • and that was entertaining.

  • Personal weaknesses.

  • - I wanna be on Tiktok right now.

  • - 'Cause we don't spend a lot of time in the kitchen.

  • - We're gonna make brownies.

  • - You can't show!

  • - Blur this!

  • - Blur it!

  • - Here's our beautiful, amazing thing.

  • We did get two divots in it taking it out, but.

  • - They look beautiful.

  • - I don't know, I'm kind of enjoying this and yeah.

  • - Now, I'm gonna enjoy this!

  • - We're gonna eat the hell outta this!

  • - Physical activity, go for a run outside,

  • go for a walk, a hike.

  • So lots of really wonderful things to be done,

  • even given the restrictions that

  • we are now sort of living under.

  • - So today was the last day and I think it went well.

  • We decided to go to the park and luckily

  • I did know how to get to the park,

  • so we didn't have to go like, oh crap we don't

  • have Google Maps, how do we get there?

  • - One, two, one, two, three, four.

  • - We just sat down, picnicked a little bit,

  • had a little bit of more of a reading sesh,

  • and you know, we jammed.

  • I brought my guitar, which I've never done.

  • That was very fun actually, I actually really enjoyed it.

  • Until the ants started tryna crawl

  • in our (beep) cracks, that really sucked.

  • - It's the end of day five and I think,

  • honestly I think the whole experience

  • definitely, we had our rocky moments.

  • (laughter)

  • Would I do this again?

  • - [In Unison] No.

  • - I think it really did connect me to myself,

  • - Yeah. - And what I am as a person.

  • - Yeah.

  • - But I don't need to spend all day with this (beep)

  • My back, lick

  • My neck, my back, lick my

  • My neck

- Hey guys!
