長島町ーDay 2

Today I woke up to this

今日はこんな美しい九州の

beautiful morning in Kyushu!

朝を迎えました！

Today we're visiting some of the local people

今日、長島町を回って、

learning first-hand what it's like to live and work here in the town of Nagashima.

ここの住んでいる人々の生活を見に行きます。

Which I'm especially happy about

個人的に、一つ楽しみにしていることは

because we might get to learn some of the local Japanese dialect here.

長島町（九州）の方言を少し教えてもらうことです！

Well, actually it kind of tastes like beer.

That's the first time I've ever heard that.

One thing I noticed about the food here

一つ気づいたけど、

a lot of the soy-based products like soy sauce and miso

ここの醤油や味噌などの味が

everything's a little sweeter here and i REALLY like that.

東京よりも甘くて気に入った。

We're going to go meet some more people today...

To start things off we're heading down to the fishermen's wharf

最初会う人はこの埠頭で働いている人です。

because there's supposed to be an early morning auction.

今朝、魚の競りをするから、見てみましょう！

So what we saw right now was an auction.

今のは魚の競りですね。

As they're going through the catch of the day

今日の新鮮なものを見て

the auctioneer was saying which prices, for which fish...like INSTANTLY.

値段をつけて、けどとても早口でしたよね！

It's really fast, did you catch it?

すごい早口だったの！聞こえる？

They use a special lingo that only they know

部外者がわからないように

to keep other's from understanding what they say.

ああいう言葉をしゃべって

So that they can't hear the prices, too.

値段とか分からないようにしている

Only the guys in the auction know what he's saying.

この競り人の人たちだけしか分からないように。

It's just our luck

これやばいよ・・・

we're trying to film a documentary

撮影中なのに

and Pokemon Go just released.

さき、日本でポケモンゴーが初リリースしたの！

What kind of crazy pokemon might be out here?!

ここで、絶対レアーなものが待っているでしょ？！

I want to catch them but I have to work!

We saw how they sell this fish, now we'll see

九州の方言ゲットだぜ！

Do you know what "UMAKA" means?

「うまか」わかる？

Like "umai"...delicious?

うまい？

Yeah!

そう！

UMA..KA...

うま・・・か

There's like an extra "M" in there.

ちょっと「ん」がはいります。

You say like, UMAKA YO!

うまかよって

Meaning "this tastes really good!"

これがおいしいねとか。

its for Kagoshima, Nagashima and Kumamoto...

鹿児島と長島と熊本（の方言）

In hiroshima they say "Jakke" (Casual for 'like')

広島じゃ「じゃっけ」というけど

Here we say "MAI"

こちは「マイ」

DATTE (Tokyo), JAKKE (Hiroshima), MAI ...

「だって、じゃけ、マイ」

MAI.

「まい」

You guy's use a lot of "MA" sounds. :)

「ま」がおおいんですけど

Like.. how do I explain this...

What's the word for "hot".

I feel like I naturally understand that one.

Then there's WAZZE

Oh yeah, WAZZE is another one.

It's like "very", like the 'very' in 'very happy' to intensify things.

in addition to its fish farms

長島町は養殖に加えて、

Nagashima is also a producer of "DEKOPON"

デコポン生産に力を入れている。

which is a citrus fruit similar to an orange

オレンジみたいな果物で

that's known for the little bump on top.

上にある凸で有名です。

The brand name for this in the agricultural collective is 'DEKOPON'

農協ブランドがデコポン

but the actual fruit and tree is called

で、この木の名前は

"SHIRANUI" in Japanese.

しらぬい。

See the "deko" or bump here?

お凸がついているのが・・・

That's where the name comes from.

その「デコ」

Once it's ripe one of these fruits can sell for..

デコポンになったら、一個皆さん食べているのが

like 1 fruit can be $5 or more on it's own.

1個五百円・・・もっとしますね。

Uhh, these look so good!

あ～～～わっぜうまかそう！

I feel like they'd go really good in a Margarita.

味がマーガリタにすごく合うと思う

Or.. maybe something more Japanese?

Like...Shochu. :)

たとえば、焼酎はいかがでしょうか？

Nagashima is also a producer of Honkaku Shochu

長島町では本格焼酎を

a single distilled traditional Japanese liquor.

作っている人もいます。

There's a huge line up of different varieties

この「島美人」などというブランドの種類があって

within this shochu that you can try

そのいくつかの味を試して

So everyone has a lot of fun picking their favorite.

自分の好みで飲むのが楽しい。

They were all pretty easy to drink

どっちでもまろやかな味がして飲みやすくて

and really fun to taste.

もちろん、自分の好みを見つけるのも楽しかった！
