  • Eat Sleep Dreamers welcome to Maltby Street Market. I'm here with my very good friend

  • Gemma. Hi. Wahey. We are in matching denim. Yes, we are in matching denim. Gemma lives

  • really close to Maltby Street market so she's going to take me round one of London's coolest

  • markets. So it's mainly a food market and so we're going to try loads of different things.

  • Gemma knows what the specialities are here so we're talking about donuts. Yep, St John

  • have a donut stand down there so I think we should definitely sample some of those. I'm

  • so excited. Alright we're going to start off by going and getting a cup of coffee. I need

  • to wake up a little bit so we're going to head down the market to a really cool little

  • coffee stand. Do you want a coffee? I'm not so much of a coffee drinker, I'm more gin.

  • More of a gin girl? I like her style!

  • Alright, I've got my flat white coffee, very excited, so Gem. Gem knows a lot about this

  • market, so Gem can you tell us a bit about when it started. It's actually a relatively

  • new market for a lot of the London markets. It started around 2010. I believe it was a

  • reclamation yard so there's a store here that has old furniture and bits and bobs and they

  • started the market. I think a lot of the stalls on the market, the permanent stalls use the

  • furniture that's kind of from here and it grew from there really. Ok, so 2010 and it's

  • not too touristy. I mean like it's quite local, isn't it? Yeah, to be honest with you i didn't

  • even know about this market until. I don't know, a year and a half, two years ago so

  • it kind of goes a bit more under the radar. Yeah and Gem knows like good local spots to

  • hang out. You really search them out I mean like whenever, because I've lived and sort

  • of come you know I've lived in other places and come back to London and whenever I've

  • come back I always hang out with Gem and her husband Nick and they show me the cool spots

  • in London because you guys know. Well I think there's always so much on your own doorstep

  • that you can explore so I always like to find it especially if something is local, even

  • easier, you can just get up and go. I guess it's juts a bit of a feeling of discovery

  • in that as well. Cool, well we're going to discover loads of great food. What should

  • we go for first? I've got my coffee, what goes with coffee? Donuts! I think coffee and

  • donuts go well together. Alright, let's do that.

  • Alright, we're at the donut stand. Can you tell us what we've got? So we have lemon,

  • chocolate and jam and then vanilla. Alright so we're starting off with the vanilla donut.

  • It looks like a nice dollop here, I mean shall I just go straight in? Yeah just dive in.

  • It's good. It's not easy to eat. Oh my lord! That is really good. Really fresh! Good amount

  • of sugar-coating on the lips, always the sign of a good donut.

  • What I love about this market is that it's really colourful like they've got beautiful

  • flags above the market. Old random, this is what you were saying about. Yeah exactly the

  • kind of reclaimed furniture that's seen throughout. And all the seats and the tables are kind

  • of all mishmash random yeah it's got a really good feel to it. Also the smells, right? Oh

  • it smells good here. And like as you walk the different stalls. It changes. Bumping

  • into people. You get like grilled cheese smells and then you'll get like spices. Alright we've

  • come to the scotch egg stall. Hi. So Gem talk us through, tell us what a scotch egg is.

  • So there is a hard boiled egg in the middle and usually a kind of layer of pork meat and

  • then it's coated in breadcrumbs, that's my basic knowledge and they are traditional at

  • picnics. Exactly it's really traditional at British picnics you'll scotch eggs. It's a

  • nice little snack and here we've got loads of different varieties right so you've got

  • the classic one then chorizo so like Spanish sausage. And a lot of scotch egg stands do

  • veggie ones now as well so if you are not into meat you can still enjoy a scotch egg.

  • So it's not as traditional. So here they have mushroom and lentil scotch eggs so everyone

  • can enjoy. And sausage rolls as well, pork pies this is the full British English. If

  • you are having a picnic you need to come here. Ok, what are we going to have? What do you

  • reckon we should try? We are going to share one. I'm in for a classic. Ok, can we get

  • one classic please? Any chutney or mustard on the side? Yes please.

  • Alright, here we go with our scotch eggs. Cheers Gem! Nice one! Oh yeah, hell yeah!

  • They've put some salt and pepper on the top, it brings out the flavour. And the egg is

  • kind of a little bit runny so it's got this real like soft savoury flavour. Yeah this

  • is good egg. Because you can get scotch eggs in super markets and they are not that great.

  • Small and kind of not much flavour to them whereas this one, these ones are like really

  • rich in flavour. Might dip it in mustard. We've got dipping. Let's see, that's quite

  • a lot of mustard. I'm going to dip as well.

  • Gem where have you brought us? I've have brought you to..Jensen's! Yeah! Best gin in the Kingdom.

  • Gin, so we are at a gin distillery?

  • Oh my gosh, ok. oh man! Yeah you can taste the rose, yeah it's really good. I'm into

  • it.

  • So Gem we've had the full tour of the gin distillery. We are clued up on the history

  • of gin. I mean, i can't remember it all but it's there somewhere. So what have you got

  • here? What i do know is that I have a classic gin and tonic and he did explain why the colour

  • is like that. Can you remember? Oh yes I remember it's the original colour of quinine which

  • is the main ingredient of the water in tonic water and they take the quinine out for commercial

  • purposes sorry not the quinine but the colour of quinine and in this one it has the original

  • colour which is why it's kind of orangey. Yeah and my one is a pink one which I'm comfortable

  • with. What's, why is mine pink? This one has some rose lemonade in it, so that's why it's

  • a pink colour. Amazing! Cheers Gem!

  • Alright Gem we've had our gin and tonics. Yeah feeling good, feeling the buzz. Feeling

  • the buzz yeah so now i think it's time to get some food. What shall we get? I'm thinking

  • maybe some kind of cheese? Cheese! Like a grilled cheese sandwich . Grilled cheese,

  • I'm into it! Let's do this.

  • It's suddenly got really busy in Maltby Street Market now. I guess people have come for their

  • lunch and to try loads of different things but yeah it's way busier than before. Yeah

  • because the sun's out so more people are coming.

  • Alright we're at the grilled cheese stand. Sorry sorry! We're at the grilled cheese stand,

  • Gem which one shall we go for/ I mean I'm thinking cheddar. Classic British cheese.

  • This looks incredible.

  • So Gem one of the things that I love about you is that you get more excited about food

  • than anyone I know and right now. I've got a big smile on my face. Look at that! Look

  • at this. Oh my gosh. Just a world of cheese. I'm loving like the crispy like the crispy

  • sides of the bread. The cheese just oozing out. it's almost like you don't want to eat

  • it, I'm so excited by looking at it. But obviously we have to eat it. Alright, go for it. Ok,

  • now this could be messy. So, I'm just going to dig in. Oh yeah. Is it good? That is so

  • hot! Maybe we should have got one each. Yeah I'm going back.
