It's Day 2 in Tohoku!

東北旅の二日目です。

Yesterday, we left the town of Iwate-machi

前回の動画のロケ、岩手町を出て

and headed east, heading for the coast of north Japan.

三陸へ向かいました。

[TOHOKU: 6 Years After the Quake]

【東北：3月11日から6年】

When I first found out we were coming here

今日のロケは「三陸」だと言われた時

I have to admit, I was little nervous to see what it would be like.

本当は、ちょっと緊張しましたね。

But, it's since years since then (the Tsunami)

でも、津波はもう6年前のことなので

and I'm excited to see how the towns

三陸の町はどれほど

have begun to rebuild

復興できたかを見るのが楽しみにしています。

Our first stop is Koishihama,

最初に見たのは「恋し浜」という

a bay that is famous for its scallops!

ホタテで有名な湾です。

Today we're meeting a fishmerman who works here.

これから、漁師さんの話を聞いてみます。

("Don't forget to put on your life jacket!")

ライフジャケット着てもらっていいですか。

So for today's scallops I was thinking...

今日はホタテの

there are some about 4 - 5 cm's wide

今、約4～5センチぐらいのやつと

then there are some about one year older than that

それから、さらに一年がたった奴

then we'll see the next batch, another year older.

それから、さらに一年が経つ水揚げする奴

Those are the one's we're actually farming now.

今水揚げ、収穫している奴・・・

We'll try and pick a few

を揚げてみて

then I thought maybe,

で最終的に

you might want to try a taste?

それを味見してもらおうかなと思って

Really?! Wow!

本当ですか？すごい！

I'm excited to try!

We are actually on a boat right now

なんと、船に乗っているよ！

doing something a little different.

すごいことやりますよ！

Yesterday we ate the bento box

昨日も駅弁の入っていた

that had scallops inside of it

ホタテを食べたけど、

but today we're actually going fishing for scallops!

実は、今日、ホタテを水揚げしてみる！

Out here in the ocean!

この海の上で！

The only thing is that

不思議なポイントですけど

Six years ago the tsunami hit here

6年前、東日本大震災により、

and there was a huge disaster

この同じ海が上がって、町をながされたけど

but there are still so many people who are

あれから一生懸命頑張って、

working hard to rebuild the area.

町を復興している人も多いです。

So we're meeting with a fisherman today

これから、今にも頑張って

to talk about how he's still getting the best scallops

おいしいホタテの収穫を続けている漁師さんの

and so come along!

話を聞いてみましょう。

シャルル、おはよう！

So, first he showed us the smaller scallops.

最小一番小さいホタテを見て、

(They're so cute and pretty!)

あーーかわいい！きれい！

then he showed us the ones that are a year older.

さらに一年がたったホタテも

( " THESE ARE SCALLOPS?! ")

これが・・・・ホタテ？！？！

and then the next level up were ready to eat!

さらに、もう食べられるようになった来たやつを・・・

Very ready to eat...

たべ・・・られるのかな・・・

Oh my gosh...

人生初めての完全にフレッシュなホタテ

っていうか、最高の朝食、これ！

That is probably the most delicious scallop or seafood

that I'll probably have for a long time!

なかなか手に入れない味がします！

This is ridiculous!

Yeah it was amazing!

He told us a story,

それから、話したも聞かせていただきました。

about the day he was out fishing

かれが船に乗って、同じ海の上にいた、

when the earthquake and tsunami came.

地震と津波が来た日。

But it only took him about half a year

あれから、また働けるようになったのは

to get going and start working again.

半年かかったそうです。

I'm just kind of taking it all in... bit by bit.

すこしずつ・・・過去のことを想像しようとしている。

What they're slowly showing us today

心の準備できたかわからないけど、

is a lot of the places that were really affected by

これから見るのは2011年に大震災と

the earthquake and tsunami that happened

津波に流された

in 2011.

被災地です。

So this place up here that we're seeing

今のところは

is one of the ruins

もともとスーパーだったと思うけど

that's still left standing.

完全に廃墟となったところです。

I've never been anywhere near here before.

2011年の被災地・・・はじめてです。

All of this is really a first look for me.

こんなところはじめてですから、

So, let's go take a first look together.

一緒にすこしみてみましょう。

That sign over there

あの看板は当時の

it points how far up the Tsunami actually hit.

津波の水位を表示している。

The 15.1 meters

15.1メートル

You can see there are cars going by

今、車がとっているところ、

but all of that was under water.

完全に水没したんですね。

RIKUZENTAKATA is the name of the town where we are.

今は陸前高田という町にいますよね。

This is where we are.

そう、今ここにいます。

The station completly disappeared.

もう、何もないですね。

"We will not forget: the tsunami that attacked our city"

「絶対忘れない：わが町を襲った津波」

There are a few abandoned reminders

空き家や廃墟となったところ、

and signposts showing how high the Tsunami struck [14.5 meters, up to the 5th floor ]

あっちこっちの津波水位を示す看板、

even standing here and looking at these images

映像と実際のところを自分の目で見てても

it's really hard to imagine what it was like to be there.

どうれだけ苦労したか想像できないと思います。

The first time I ever heard of this region, "TOHOKU"

初めて「東北」という地名を聞いた時は

was 6 years ago. "TOHOKU DAISHINSAI"

6年前の「東北大震災」の見出しや

"GREAT EAST JAPAN EARTHQUAKE,"

東日本大震災を関連するニュースでした。

When the earthquake and tsunami hit Japan's northeast coast.

最初は地震と津波の話を聞いたから

For me, as a foreigner looking in

外国人の私にとって

who never had heard of this place

向こうからみると、

Until now, "Tohoku" meant "Tragedy".

「東北」エコール「悲劇」でした。

But now that I'm here and looking at things

今になって、現地を自分の目で見ると

you can see that next to almost every memory of the tragedy

被災したところのすぐそばには

there's a sign that they're rebuilding.

復興の様子も見れる。

A lot of people say that nothings left in Tohoku anymore

東北を話すと「何もない」という人も多いけど

but it's not that nothing's left

本当は何もないというわけでもない。

they're actually building everything.

実、新しく作っている！

The earth that we're standing on right now, they built this!

足の下にある土は人間が使った高台です。

There's a hotel back there, and they just built that!

あっちにも新しくできたホテルもある！

The earth and the walls are being built higher and safer

土と壁をもっと高く建てて安全の町を作っている。

This is a model but, this was a mountain.

これ、陸前高田のモデルタウンですけど

But they broke down the mountain

山を崩れて、土を集まって

and built a conveyor built bridge

町を渡るコンベヤーベルトで

that takes the sand and earth over to these parts.

低いところへ移動するのを示している。

Because one of the ways that they're rebuilding

こうやって、町を復興している。

is reinforcing by making the land higher.

地面をもっと高くすることによって

So that if there were another Tsunami in the future

また津波がくるとしたら、

people can be at a higher elevation off the sea level

町に住んでいる人々を

and hopefully safer.

救うかもしれない。

今日みたいに、漁師さんの話を聞いて

and made me understand more about Japan.

リアル・ジャパンを少し見えてと感じました。

I feel like I have a deeper understanding of Japan now

普段よりも本当の日本を触れたように感じます。

that's more than just fun in a big city or hanging out with friends

大都市で友達とワイワイするのだけじゃんくて、

People live here. These are their lives!

毎日の生活を頑張っている人がいる。

I feel like I got to take part in that a little bit.

こんな日本にも少し参加できたと感じました。

So, I'm really glad I came.

本当に来てよかったと思います。

Before the day was out, we visited a local chef

最後に、地元のレストランにも尋ねてみました。

who hand-delivered meals to people in the area who lost their homes.

当時、家を流された人達に弁当を配っていたそうです。

Six years later, he's still uniting people in the region

6年後のこのレストランで、おいしい料理を提供して

with his food!

人々をつなごうとしている。

" What's your favorite food??"

じゃ、好きな食べ物は？

"All foods!"

全部！

"That's perfect!!"

素晴らしい！

This spinach is SERIOUSLY delicious!

ここ三陸で

Here in "sanriku", along the coast

津波の後にも頑張って植えた

is the region that was most hit by the Tsunami

野菜や収穫した

and chef here uses all the vegetables

海の幸をたっぷり使っていますから

and all the products from the sea, from there!

素敵でしょう！

So, this is really neat!!

食べながら、当時の話を聞かせていただきました。

While we were eating he told us more stories about how he volunteered.

最後に、お持ち帰りで、一つの言葉を教えていただきました。

But he also shared one special word for us to take home with us.

がんばっぺし！

"GANBAPPESHI!"

がんばっぺし！！

GANBAPPESHI!!!

「頑張れ」じゃないんですよ。

It's different from plainly saying 'GANBARE'

がんばっぺしは「レッツ」

because "GANBAPPESHI"

「レッツ」・・・トゥゲザー（一緒に）

implies "together"

「一緒に頑張ろう」は「がんばっぺし！」

To say "we can overcome, together!" you say

「頑張れ」じゃなくて、頑張ろう

not "ganbare" or "ganbatte"

一緒に、がんばっぺし！

here, we say "GANBAPPESHI"

東北、3・11から六年後

Tohoku, six years later.

ここにきて、自分の目で見たのは

When you visit the area, and meet the people there

山を動かすような人々の力です。

you can see that they're literally moving mountains.

（あそこには新しい家を建築する…）

They're going to build new homes over there.

一緒に協力して、ものを作って食べて

They work together, help to grow and eat together

新しい、強い町を

they're building together

作っている。

something strong and new.

津波の日から、ただ一つの

There's a tree in this region, called the Miracle,

この奇跡の一本松が残っている。

the last pine tree left standing after the disaster.

町のあっちこっちから高い松の木だけど、

It's one of the tallest things you could see in the city

周りにも新しい町を作っている。

and now they're beginning to build around it
