Right now we're in an interesting time period for shounen.

少年ジャンプは今、興味深い時期にあります。

Instead of the tried and true fun loving plots which are just excuses to have fights, shounens moving in a new direction where the story actually matters.

これまでに確立されてきた、ケンカをする口実だけの楽しいプロットでなく、新しい方向へ向かっているのです。そして、ストーリーの内容が重要となっています。

Demon slayer, Dr Stone, and Fire Force are EXTREMELY GOOD examples that come to mind.

『鬼滅の刃』、『Dr.STONE』、『炎炎ノ消防隊』が、非常に良い例です。

So if you're interested in what this new wave is all about, let's dig into Demon Slayer.

この新しい波の全貌について興味がある人は、『鬼滅の刃』を考察してみましょう。

If you don't know this is my series on the radar, where I find good anime so you don't have to.

知らない人のために言っておくと、これは要注目の、僕が作っているシリーズです。皆さんが探さなくても良いように、僕が良いアニメを見つけます。

Today we're talking about Demon Slayer, so let's get to the summary.

今日は『鬼滅の刃』について話します。さて、概要を見てみましょう。

We follow our protagonist, Tanjiro through the Taisho period of Japan.

時は日本の大正時代。主人公は炭治郎です。

He's a nice kid selling coal in a different town, and is forced to be away from home one night due to a storm.

彼は、色々な町で炭を売る優しい子どもです。ある夜、嵐のため、家から離れさせられます。

He comes back to discover his family has been annihilated by demons, the only survivor being his sister.

炭治郎が戻ると、家族は鬼に殺されており、妹だけが生き残っています。

Thing is, his sister has been transformed into a demon.

彼の妹が、鬼と化しているのです。

Tanjiro goes through grueling training and hardship to become a demon hunter capable of curing his sister.

炭治郎は厳しいトレーニングや困難を乗り越え、妹を元に戻すことのできる鬼狩りとなります。

Demon Hunter is a show you can very easily find yourself being addicted to.

『鬼滅の刃』は、簡単に夢中になってしまうくらい面白いものですよ。

The plot itself is very intruiging and opens itself up to tons of potential.

プロットそのものが非常に興味深く、たくさんの可能性が広がっています。

I've read the manga, and the plot progresses at a really nice pace.

僕はマンガを読みましたが、プロットがすごく良いペースで進んでいきます。

Where many shounen have frustratingly long-ass arcs this story seems to always be on the move.

少年ジャンプの多くの作品は、イライラするほど長い連載が続きますが、このストーリーには、常に動きがあるように思います。

So if you're sick of generic shounen story-telling this is the show for you.

少年ジャンプに共通した、ストーリー展開の手法に飽き飽きしたという人は、この作品が良いでしょう。

The story telling is not some Shakespearian masterpiece, but even if you took away the entertaining ass fights, I'd still be interested enough to stick around.

ストーリー展開は、シェイクスピアの傑作のようなものではありませんが、面白いケンカのシーンを除いても、まだ見たいと思わせてくれます。

Let's move on to the characters:

キャラクターに移りましょう。

Definitely one of the strongest points this show has is its main character.

この作品の最大の強みの1つが、メインキャラクターたちです。

Wheras most shounen protags (protagonists) say to themselves "I must be better... I can't keep getting my ass beat"

少年ジャンプの主人公のほとんどが、「もっと良くならなきゃ…負けてばかりじゃダメだ」と自分に言い聞かせますが、

Tanjiro skips all of that and just does better.

炭治郎はそういったことは全て抜きで、ただ改善します。

He's extremely quick-witted, doesn't have any shitty motives, ISN'T ANNOYING, and is overall a really, really likable character.

彼は頭の回転が非常に良く、悪い動機など抱いていなくて、イライラするようなキャラクターではないし、概して、非常に好感の持てる人です。

I'm not sure how far we're going to get in this season, so I'll play it safe by saying the main cast is pretty enjoyable.

今シーズン、どこまで作品に入り込むのかよく分からないので、メインキャラクターはかなりイケている、と言うまでにとどめておきましょう。

I could see this guy getting annoying, but I personally don't feel that way because I didn't hear him screaming in the manga, but everyone has a nice amount of growth to their character, so even if you don't initially like them, you eventually will.

このキャラクターがイラついているのが分かりますね。個人的には、僕はそんな風には感じませんが―というのも、マンガでは彼の叫び声は聞こえませんからね。でも、キャラクター皆が適度に成長するので、最初は気に入らなくても、最終的には好きになると思います。

So with that out of the way, lets move to the next segment.

この辺りにしておいて、次のトピックに移りましょう。

Which is art.

芸術です。

At face value, the art is nothing special.

額面どおりだと、この作品の芸術は、特別なものではありません。

And that's what I believed until mid-way through the episode.

エピソードの中間部分に至るまで、僕はそう思っていました。

While the show isn't generally "pretty", it does make for some very special moments, namely this woods scene.

この作品は、概して「素敵」なものではありませんが、すごく特別な瞬間がいくつかあります。この森のシーンです。

I'll also note that the art is very efficient. Confusing or just unclear moments in the manga were effortlessly cleared up in the anime adaptation.

また、芸術が非常に効率的です。マンガにおいて、混乱するような、不明確な場面は、アニメ版では巧みに取り除かれています。

If they keep this up, the action scenes later in the series could be really God damn cool.

このまま行けば、シリーズ後半のアクションシーンは、ものすごくクールになるでしょう。

And that's what I think is what matters most in a show like this.

こういう作品では、この点が一番重要だと僕は思います。

Hopefully the future episodes look the same.

今後のエピソードも、こんな風に描かれていれば良いな、と思います。

I wouldn't listen to a single one of these songs by themselves, but much like the promised neverland, the music seems to always fit the mood.

この作品の歌だけを単独で聞くことはありませんが、『約束のネバーランド』と同様、音楽がムードにマッチしているように思います。

While I wasn't that into it, a lot of the comments I saw were foaming at the fucking mouth for this music, and I think that means something.

僕はそこまで音楽にハマりはしなかったのですが、コメントの多くは音楽について、あれやこれやという内容だったので、人々にとって何かしら意味があるもの、ということしょう。

People rarely give a shit about music in anime besides the openings, so when I see a bunch of people take note of it, it's gotta be good, right?

オープニングソング以外、アニメ内の歌が注目を集めることはめったにないので、たくさんの人がコメントしているということは、良い音楽だという意味でしょう？僕が言えるのは、これくらいです。

Now i'm not bullshitting when I say that this will be the best anime of the season.

この作品は、今期ベストなアニメになると思います。これは冗談じゃないですよ。

I don't know about this one because I was too busy to finish it, but my point is still made.

これについては分かりません。作品を見終えるのに忙しかったから…でも、僕が言いたいことは分かるでしょう。
