Today, I would like to speak about

giving two users a feeling

携帯電話を通じて

for each other through mobile phones.

感覚を伝え合えるように するということです

Today's question is,

ここでの疑問は

"How can we make telecommunication more emotional?"

「遠隔コミュニケーションを もっと 感情的なものにできないか？」

And why do we want to do that?

「どうしてそうしたいのか？」 ということです

Well, because there are two main reasons for telecommunication.

遠隔コミュニケーションの意義は 大きく２つあります

And the one reason is information exchange.

１つは情報交換です

And for that, speech is really good.

この点について会話は とても効果的です

The other major reason for telecommunication is

もう１つ大きいのは

because we want to be in touch,

私たちが近くにいない人との

because the other person is not there.

触れ合いを求める ということです

And that's an emotional need,

これは感情的なニーズであって

and not so much of a rational need.

合理的なものではありません

So how do we communicate emotionally in mobile phones?

では携帯電話でどうやって 感情の伝達ができるのでしょう？

Well, we can put a text message on a mobile phone,

テキストメッセージに 顔文字を 添えるというのもあります

put a smiley in there or we can blow a kiss over a video call.

あるいはビデオ通話で キスの仕草を することもできます

But when you think about being in touch

でも テキストやビデオや

maybe text, video and speech are not all we can do.

会話だけに とらわれる ことはありません

Maybe we can enable people to be in touch

携帯電話を通じて 肉体的に 触れ合うことだって

physically, really, through mobile phones.

できるかもしれません

So today I brought three prototypes that I would like to show you,

今日は そのような可能性を 探るために作った

that were built to explore that field.

３つの試作を持ってきました

The first prototype is about the hand.

最初の試作品は 手に関するものです

Imagine a mobile phone that lets you feel the other person's hand

電話で話しているとき 相手が自分の手を握る

holding your hand while speaking on the phone.

感触が伝わる携帯というのを 想像してみてください

Let me show you the mobile phone that communicates pressure.

握る力を伝える携帯を ご覧頂きましょう

It's very simple.

とてもシンプルです

It just communicates the pressure right to the back of your hand.

手の甲に圧迫感を伝えます

(Laughter)

(笑)

I'm using a motor inside, and then we just pull that towards the hand.

中にモーターがあって 手のほうに 引き寄せるようになっています

And that's a crazy idea.

クレージーなアイデアです

Speaking of crazy ideas, what about moisture? Or liquids?

クレージーなアイデアといえば 湿り気なんかどうでしょう？ 液体とか？

(Laughter)

(笑)

I can imagine a lot of people I don't want

遠隔コミュニケーションで 湿り気や液体なんて

any moisture or liquids, telecommunication with at all.

勘弁してほしいという人が 多いでしょうが

But there are some really interesting exceptions.

興味深い例外もあります

If you think about crying or kissing,

涙やキスです

can we put that into mobile phone?

これを携帯に 取り入れられないでしょうか？

Well, we tried it.

やってみました

And it looks like this.

こんな感じです

That's a mobile phone that communicates moisture.

この携帯は湿り気を伝えます

Mwuah.

If you want to give a kiss to the other person

相手にキスを送りたいと思ったら

it goes through.

そうできるのです

So, the technology behind that is a sponge, a wet sponge.

これを実現するテクノロジーは 湿ったスポンジです

We push it against the membrane.

それを膜に押しつけます

Here you see it.

Mmwuah.

Very intense, huh?

情熱的でしょう？

Very intimate.

すごく親密感があります

The third thing I would like to show you is more subtle.

３つ目のは もっと 何気ないものです

If you think about sighing or whispering

相手が ため息をついたり 何かささやいたとき

and somebody is talking really close to you,

間近だと

you can feel that air really sensitive, here at the neck.

首のあたりに吐息を くすぐったく感じますよね

And you can feel that air through the phone.

この吐息も電話で伝えられます

That would probably look something like this:

たぶん こんな感じになるでしょう

it's a mobile phone that communicates through air.

これは息でコミュニケートする携帯です

(Blows air)

ふーッ

It's surprising, you need only very little air

驚くのは ほんのわずかな風で 十分だということです

because we're so sensitive --

とても敏感な部分ですから

(Blows air) Whoah.

ふーッ ヒャッとなります

(Laughter)

(笑)

So these are prototypes, they're experiments,

どれも実験的な試作で

they are ideas, and we got them in the office.

アイデアを思い付いて 職場に持って行き

It's a lot of fun to play with them of course.

みんなで楽しみました

And what they do is they help us to experience a future vision

これは未来の遠隔コミュニケーションが どのようなものになりうるかを

of what telecommunication could be like in the future.

体験させてくれます

We make that experience of it today.

それを今 体験させてくれるんです

We have to built them actually physically

将来のビジョンを体験するには

to experience that future vision.

物として作る必要があります

And what they do -- in playing with that you get

そして それで遊んでいると

the question that arises.

疑問が浮かびます

Do we want that?

これをほしいだろうか？

What kind of telecommunication do we want in the future?

どんな遠隔コミュニケーションを したいか？

How much nearness do we want?

どれくらいの近接感を 望むだろうか？

So the topic is being in touch.

ここで興味があるのは 触れ合いです

And maybe the next time your beloved one thinks of you

この次 皆さんの愛する人が 皆さんのことを考えるとき

they will not just put in text message.

それをテキストにするだけでなく

They might just send you a kiss.

キスも送るかもしれません
