Let's start with something basic...

まずは簡単な言葉から・・・

MONSHINHYOU..??? What is that word?

”問診表”　何なんだろう？

You can actually change the settings to turn off the furigana

振り仮名の表示は設定でオフできますけど

Let's say for example that you didn't know what this word was.

とりあえず、問診表の意味を知りたかったら

If you click the word, it tells you that it means:

So, HOW do you read!?

さて、読書のコツ　に参りましょう！

Whether it's digital or old school paperback,

電子書籍でも小説でも、

how you pick content can be the most important step

本の選び方がもっとも大事です！

in making sure you actually finish reading and learn something!

うまく選ばないと、諦めてしまう可能性が高いからね！

Here are my 3 criteria that I usually use:

私はいつも、この3点の条件で見極めています：

1: I use books where I'm already familiar with the story

①母語ですでに知っているストーリー　を選ぶ

2: for almost every story, even if it's one I've read before,

次はジャンルとか関係なく、

I prefer to read stories that are WRITTEN IN FIRST PERSON.

②一人称の物語形式で書いたもの　を選ぶ

You can tell this pretty easily if you look for the kanji WATASHI [私] BOKU [僕] or ORE[俺],

日本語なら、「私」、｢僕｣、｢俺｣の漢字の存在だけで

look for these key pronouns!

すぐ確認できるから見つけやすいです。

3: It has to be something that I'm personally interested in learning about.

③最近ハマっているトピックや趣味について解説する本　を選ぶ

In the past I read a lot of cook books in Japanese

以前、いつも日本語の料理本を読んだけど、

but recently I'm more into apps, IT, business

最近アプリ、IT、ビジネス関係のものが特に好きです。

it's fun to read the same topics in Japanese, too.

英語でやっていた趣味を日本語で読むのがさらに楽しいからです。

But my most important criteria is materials written in first person!

でも、この3つの中で、優先しているのが一人称の物語形式で書いてあることです。

For example, the first time I tried to read Harry Potter in Japanese

たとえば、はじめてハリーポッターを読んでみた時、

it was actually really hard to read in Japanese

日本語のファンタジーの書き方やスタイルに慣れていなかったから

because it's not written in a style that you use anywhere else.

日本語をどれだけ勉強しても読めなかったのです。

Japanese is pretty easy if you're good at memorizing

日本語のいいところは、決まった形式が多いから、暗記力さえあれば、難しくないところです。

because you just need to learn the clear-cut ways of talking in specific situations.

いろんな場合のそれぞれの話し方・書き方が決まっているからこそ、

You speak a certain way, you write emails a certain way

会話の話し方をそのまま真似して、Emailの書き方の形式をそのまま繰り返して、

you read in a certain way and tell stories in a certain way

小説の書き方をそのまま見慣れてきて

and all of these maybe the same language, but the style is very different!

その場合のスタイルを覚えたら、後はそんなに変わらないから覚えやすいです。

and when books are written in 3rd person, story-telling mode

しかし、日本語の小説が三人称の語り手の場合、

there's a lot of flowerly grammar and vocabulary

美しい文法やゴージャスな語彙がよく利用されているから面白いけど

that are very different than what you find in real world speech

仕事、会話、などの日常では使えないのです。

so while it's interesting and fun

つまり、読むのが楽しいけど、

I find that I can't use these words most of the time

勉強しても活用できない言葉が多いから

so I try to avoid third person, story-telling style

会話力を優先している私にとって、

and stick to first person because it's actually closer

会話でも使えるような言葉を目指しているから

to what I use otherwise everyday.

一人称の物語形式が優先です！

These are the books I picked via those 3 criteria!

とりあえず、この3つの条件で選んだ本を紹介します！

The first book is KIMI NO NA WA (yep, I forgot to say 'wa' here. :P )

まずは｢君の名は｣

it was only 108 yen, or $1 basically!

108円で買って、安い！

KIMI NO NA WA was a beautifully made movie

｢君の名は｣は日本国内外で大ヒットになった映画ですが、

and there's a book form where you can read the same story.

同じストーリーを小説で読めます！

It's a story that I already know, and guess what!

映画を見たからストーリーはすでに知っているし、

It's written in first person... TWICE!

一人称の語り手　といっても、二人いる！

Because there are the male and female main characters

主人公の男性、女性二人が同時に語り手で、

It's written in first person, short, non-past form.

一人称の語り手として書かれているから

current, and you're kind of immersed in the scene

ストーリーを自分で体験しているように感じますね。

[ORE WA MUSUBI-NARETE-KITA NECK TIE WO SHIME, SUUTSU WO KIRU] "(boy)I'm finally getting the hang of tying a tie, put on my suit and ---"

（本を読んでいる）

"(girl) -- I opened the door to my apartment--"

（本を読んでいる）

"(boy)-- I shut the door to my condo, and in front of me there's..."

(本を読んでいる）

The girl's dialog literally interrupts the guys

主人公が途中で変わってしまうから

they have these parallel stories that interrupt each other

二人のストーリーを

but it's written in first person, short form, non-past form

同時に読んでいるから

so it's very current.

とても面白いです！

This is actually very close to language you would use in real life.

ストーリーに出ている言葉も日常会話にでている

So it's really easy to read, and also really useful!

言葉に近いから利便性も高い！

Really immersive and interesting, so I've been enjoying this one a lot.

書き方もストーリー自体が面白いから気に入りました！

'Norwegian Wood" by Haruki Murakami.

つぎは村上春樹のノルウェイの森です。

I opened it, checked the first page and realized

1ページ目を見て気づいたんだけど、

while this is very imaginative and fantasy like

想像力やストーリーの魅力は当然ですが、

it's still written in first person!

これも一人称の語り手でした！

[boku wa san-ju-nana-sai de, BOEING 747 no shiito ni suwatteita.] I was 37, riding on a Boeing 747.

(本を読んでいる）

I mean, that's the first sentence!

これは一つ目の文章ですけど、

I noticed that in most of his books

村上春樹の多くの小説は

he tends to write these fantasy, riveting stories

ファンタジーぽくて、ストーリーが面白いけど、

in first person, stream of consciousness style

書き方はいつも一人称の語り手で、

but it's also in short, past form!

分かりやすい過去形で書かれています。

When you speak Japanese and tell stories with your friends

日常会話でも、あったことを友達を伝える時、

You tend to speak in short, past form.

もちろん一人称の語り手ですけど、短文式にちかい過去形を使う場合が多いです。

[ne! kiite! Kono aida sugoi koto ga ATTA n dakedo, ] Hey! So, the craziest thing happened!

村上春樹のストーリーがまさに友達が喋っているように

[suupaa ni ittekite sa,] so like, I went to the grocery store

書いてあるから、馴染みがあって面白いです。

[chikaku ni aru atarashii mise ga DEKITA n da yo!] and there was a new shop nearby!

次は『7つの習慣』です！

[poutine to iu kanada fuu no poteto furai to meepuru no koohii mo ATTA n desu yo!] They had Poutine, this Canadian-style loaded fries and maple coffee!

最近流行っているみたいだけど、ブックオフでこんな

[natsukashikatta! oishikatta yo!] What a throw back! It was so good!

ビジネス理論を漫画で伝える本が多かったです。

Murakami's stories are very interesting,

日本だから、漫画という独特な伝え方もありますね！

but they're written in a way that's useable in your own story telling.

これは『7つの習慣』によって7つのチャプターに分けられて、

This is the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People

それぞれの漫画のシーンで解決されています。

there's a lot of books like this in the bestseller section of Book Off

チャプターの最後に、理論をちゃんと文章でまとめています。

business books, told through manga!

あの大人気な本に基づいているけど、

In Japan, what better way to present information, than in a manga!

漫画のイラストもあって面白いです！

So it talks about the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

同じようにマーケティング理論などを漫画で伝える本もありました。

in 7 different chapters, using manga characters.

まあ、ビジネスノウハウは本ではなく、経験して実践的に学ぶモノだと思うんですけど、

then at the end of each chapters, they summarize in Japanese

実際のビジネス経験にあわせて、こういうのが楽しくてやる気がでます。

it's like a cliffnotes of the original text

次、公園で読んだり、

with the addition of new manga characters!

自分の朝の読書に使いたいです。

I mean there were marketing and other books,

こういうのをもっと読みたいです！

I don't believe business acumen is something you learn in a book

さて、みんなが知らいたいのはこれでしょう：

but it is fun to supplement, in something as fun as this!

日本では、中学生や高校生がよく読んでいる

This is something I'd enjoy reading in the park,

Really looking forward to getting more into this one!

最後に来るどんでん返しが想像以外で

And now, to the meat of the story! To the holy grail!!!

とても読んで楽しいです！

There are these series of books that have become really popular recently

ちなみに、「どんでん返し」は英語で" plot twist " （プロット・ツィスト）といえる！

that have numbers in the titles.

一番気に入ったストーリーは「はじめてのSNS」といって、

The GOFUN-GO NI IGAI NA KETSUMATSU series (5 minute plot twist series)

携帯、パソコンなどが禁止されている家庭の男の子が主人公です。

Really quick reads that make you giggle because

彼はSNSをやってみたいからTwitterのアカウントを初めて、

the endings are just so weird and unexpected.

Twitterのある行動にハマってしまって・・・結局最後に、

This word, DONDENGAESHI in Japanese actually means 'plot twist'.

どんでん返し！ (PLOT TWIST!)

One of them is called my First SNS (social media)

ネタバレはしないけどねｗ！

It's a kid who's not allowed to have a cellphone or computer at his home

面白くて書き方もとても分かりやすいし

but he secretly started his own twitter account

5ページぐらいの短いストーリーがたくさん入っていて

started getting into the deep, dark side of the internet... and thennnn...

さっき紹介した本と違ってフリガナもあって、

DONDEN-GAESHI! The plot twist!!

本当に読みやすいです。

which I'm not going to spoil for you guys!

”はじめてのSNS”、”不眠症”

So perfect and appropriately leveled

とてもリアルなコンテンツだよね。

The stories in this book are about 5 pages long

でもリアルだからこそ面白いでしょ!

unlike the other books I mentioned, this one has furigana

紹介した本の中で『君の名は』が一番人気だと思うんだけど、

the stories are in first person, they're in short form

一冊をおススメするなら、以外な結シリーズがまだ勉強中の皆さんにいいと思う。

The 5 minute plot twist series

まずは、ストップせずに即読すること。

読み続けて、知らない言葉にあったら、そのままスキップすればいいです！

In terms of how to read it, here are my quick tips.

大体の背景や主人公のイメージが分かればいいと思ってもいいだろう。

Whether you're using a paperback or app like Satori Reader

それぐらいわかればそのまま続けて、知らない言葉をスキップすればいいです。

First, just SIGHT READ.

途中で言葉を調べないで！

Just read through it, and if you see something you don't know, just skip it.

途中で勉強しようとしたら、最後まで読まなくなって、飽きてしまうからです。

If you can generally understand what's going on, when, and to whom

どうしても知りたい言葉があれば、鉛筆で下線を書いて

then you probably picked a book to your level

後で戻って来ればいいでしょう。

keep sight reading, and skip over words that are too difficult.
