at the south parts of the Nairobi National Park.

僕は ここで暮らしてます ケニアの―

Those are my dad's cows at the back,

ナイロビ国立公園の南部に住んでいます

and behind the cows,

後ろにいるのは 僕のお父さんの牛です

that's the Nairobi National Park.

そして 牛の後ろにあるのが

Nairobi National Park is not fenced in the south widely,

ナイロビ国立公園です

which means wild animals like zebras

ナイロビ国立公園の南側― 僕の住む所にはフェンスがありません

migrate out of the park freely.

つまり シマウマのような 野生動物が

So predators like lions follow them,

公園から 自由に 移動して来るんです

and this is what they do.

すると ライオンのような捕食動物も 同じように移動してきて

They kill our livestock.

ライオンが 家畜を

This is one of the cows which was killed at night,

殺してしまうんです

and I just woke up in the morning and I found it dead,

この牛は うちの牛で 夜 襲われました

and I felt so bad,

僕が 次の朝 普段通りに起きて 見てみると 死んでいたんです

because it was the only bull we had.

すごく悪いことをしたと思いました

My community, the Maasai, we believe that

家族で所有していた たった１頭の雄牛だったんです

we came from heaven with all our animals and all the land

僕のコミュニティー マサイ族は―

for herding them, and that's why we value them so much.

すべての動物や生活するための土地と共に 人間は天国からやって来たと信じています

So I grew up hating lions so much.

だから家畜を大切にするんです

The morans are the warriors

小さい頃から ライオンが大嫌いでした

who protect our community and the livestock,

モラン達はマサイの戦士で―

and they're also upset about this problem.

僕達のコミュニティーや 家畜を守ってくれます

So they kill the lions.

モランは この問題にも とても腹を立てているので

It's one of the six lions which were killed in Nairobi.

モランが ライオンを殺しています

And I think this is why the Nairobi National Park lions are few.

これは ナイロビで殺された　 ６頭のライオンの１頭です

So a boy, from six to nine years old, in my community

これが ナイロビ国立公園に ライオンがほとんどいない理由だと思います

is responsible for his dad's cows,

僕のコミュニティーでは ６歳から９歳の男の子が

and that's the same thing which happened to me.

家の牛の世話を任されます

So I had to find a way of solving this problem.

同じように 僕にこの役がやってきました

And the first idea I got was to use fire,

だから この問題を解決しなければと 思いました

because I thought lions were scared of fire.

１つ目のアイデアは 火を使うことです

But I came to realize that that didn't really help,

ライオンは 火を怖がるかと思いました

because it was even helping the lions

でも そんなに役に立たないと 気づかされました

to see through the cowshed.

むしろ　ライオンに 目立つようにしてしまって

So I didn't give up. I continued.

牛の場所を見つけるのを 助けてしまったんです

And a second idea I got was

でも あきらめませんでした

to use a scarecrow.

２つ目に考えた アイデアは

I was trying to trick the lions

かかしを使うことです

[into thinking] that I was standing near the cowshed.

牛の囲いの近くに 僕が立っている―

But lions are very clever. (Laughter)

と思わせて ライオンをだまそうとしたんですが・・・

They will come the first day and they see the scarecrow, and they go back,

ライオンは とても頭が良いんですよ（笑）

but the second day, they'll come and they say,

ライオンも 初めての日は かかしを見て引き返しますよね

this thing is not moving here, it's always here. (Laughter)

でも 次の日に来た時には ライオンは「あれは動かないし―

So he jumps in and kills the animals.

いつもいるぞ」って 分かったみたいなんです（笑）

So one night, I was walking around the cowshed with a torch,

そうなると 牛の柵を飛び越えて 家畜を殺してしまいます

and that day, the lions didn't come.

ある夜 懐中電灯を持って 牛の柵の近くを歩いていました

And I discovered that lions are afraid of a moving light.

その日 ライオンは 柵には 近寄りませんでした

So I had an idea.

ライオンは 動く光を怖がることが 分かったんです

Since I was a small boy,

それで 思いついたんです

I used to work in my room for the whole day,

小さい頃から―

and I even took apart my mom's new radio,

一日中 部屋にこもって 色々作業をしていました

and that day she almost killed me,

お母さんの 新品のラジオを 分解したこともあるんです

but I learned a lot about electronics. (Laughter)

その日 お母さんに―

So I got an old car battery,

もう少しで殺されそうになりましたけど（笑） でも これで電子機器のことは 良く分かりました（笑）

an indicator box. It's a small device found in a motorcycle,

アイデア実現のために まずは 古い車のバッテリーと―

and it helps motorists when they want to turn right or left. It blinks.

方向指示器を手に入れました 指示器はオートバイの一部の小さな装置で

And I got a switch where I can switch on the lights, on and off.

オートバイが左右に曲がる時に 点滅して知らせるためのものです

And that's a small torch from a broken flashlight.

それから 光を点滅させるための スイッチも用意しました

So I set up everything.

そして これは壊れた懐中電灯から外した 小さいライトです

As you can see, the solar panel charges the battery,

これを組み立てました

and the battery supplies the power

ご覧のとおり ソーラーパネルが バッテリーを充電します

to the small indicator box. I call it a transformer.

バッテリーが 小さい方向指示器に

And the indicator box makes the lights flash.

電気を供給します 指示器のことはトランスフォーマーと呼んでいます

As you can see, the bulbs face outside,

この方向指示器が 光を点滅させます

because that's where the lions come from.

電球は外に向けています

And that's how it looks to lions when they come at night.

ライオンが来る方面です

The lights flash and trick

夜中に来るライオンが見ると こんな風に見えます

the lions into thinking I was walking around the cowshed,

電球が点滅することで ライオンは 僕が牛の柵の近くを

but I was sleeping in my bed.

歩きまわっていると 勘違いするんです

(Laughter)

僕はベッドで寝てましたけど

(Applause)

So I set it up in my home two years ago,

ありがとう

and since then, we have never experienced any problem with lions.

２年前に これを僕の家に 取り付けました

And my neighboring homes heard about this idea.

それ以来 ライオンとは 何の問題も起こっていません

One of them was this grandmother.

すると 僕の隣人たちが このアイデアを聞きつけました

She had a lot of her animals being killed by lions,

その中の１人が このおばあさんでした

and she asked me if I could put the lights for her.

ライオンに たくさんの家畜を殺されていました このおばあさんから―

And I said, "Yes."

僕の装置を付けて欲しい と頼まれました

So I put the lights. You can see at the back, those are the lion lights.

僕は 「もちろん」と答えました

Since now, I've set up seven homes around my community,

こうして ライトを設置しました 後ろに見えるのが ライオンのライトです

and they're really working.

これまで 僕のコミュニティーの ７つの家に 取り付けました

And my idea is also being used now all over Kenya

どれも上手くいっています

for scaring other predators like hyenas, leopards,

僕のアイデアは 今や ケニア全土で広がっていて

and it's also being used

ハイエナやヒョウのような 他の捕食動物を追い払うことにも

to scare elephants away from people's farms.

使われていたり

Because of this invention, I was lucky to get a scholarship

農地に ゾウを近づけないためにも 使われています

in one of the best schools in Kenya,

この発明のおかげで 僕はケニアでもトップクラスの―

Brookhouse International School,

学校に通う奨学金をもらいました

and I'm really excited about this.

My new school now is coming in and helping

本当に嬉しいです

by fundraising and creating an awareness.

新しく通い始めた学校は 資金集めやライトを知ってもらうことに

I even took my friends back to my community,

動いてくれたり 取り組みに力を貸してくれています

and we're installing the lights to the homes

僕のコミュニティーに 学校の友達も連れてきて 彼らの手までも借りて

which don't have [any], and I'm teaching them how to put them.

まだライトを付けていない家庭に ライトを取り付けています

So one year ago, I was just a boy in the savanna grassland

同時に 設置方法も みんなに教えています

herding my father's cows,

１年前 僕はサバンナの草原で お父さんの牛の世話をする―

and I used to see planes flying over,

ただの少年でした

and I told myself that one day, I'll be there inside.

飛行機が 飛んで行くのを 見ていました

And here I am today.

「自分がいつかその中に乗ってみせる」― そう自分に言い聞かせていました

I got a chance to come by plane for my first time for TED.

僕は 今日ここに 立っています

So my big dream is to become an aircraft engineer and pilot when I grow up.

TEDのため 初めて 飛行機に乗ることができました

I used to hate lions, but now because my invention

僕の夢は 飛行機のエンジニアと パイロットになることです

is saving my father's cows and the lions,

僕は ずっとライオンが嫌いでした でも この発明のおかげで―

we are able to stay with the lions without any conflict.

お父さんの牛も ライオンたちも守れているから
