and today I'm taking you to one of my favorite places, to Nikko!

私のお気に入りの場所の一つである日光へ皆さんをご案内しますね。

I just went to the information center over there

今さっき、そこの観光案内所でこれを買いました。

and bought this: The All Area Nikko Pass!

日光パス（オールエリア）！

It's a pass that gives you access to the ropeway, special discounts, entry into different attractions

この切符はロープウェイにも乗れるし、特別割引が受けられたり、いろいろなアトラクションにも入場できます。

so I'm gonna check these out on the train

これから電車の中でよく調べて、

and figure out where we should explore next.

どこに行くか吟味したいと思います。

Okay, so we made it to Nikko station.

東武日光駅に着きました。

The all area pass has almost everything included in it,

日光パスは、日光のほぼ全ての場所をカバーしていますが、

except for into Toshogu Shrine, the 3 monkeys shrine.

三猿で有名な東照宮は別です。

So if you wanted to see the three monkeys shrine you'd have to buy a ticket,

ですから、もし東照宮に行きたければ、

which you can do easily in English using the ticket machine over there.

駅構内にある券売機で入場券を購入しておくのがいいでしょう。

It's too windy outside to ride the boat

ああ、残念！　強風で欠航だそうです。

but if you were to ride the boat you can use the same pass to ride it as many times as you want

。普段なら、船に乗りたければ、日光パスで何度でも乗れます。

and this is the window you would go to

but because of the weather and crazy wind

まあ、天候と強風には勝てません。

we're going to skip that and try something else for today.

I read that there's a Diplomat named Sir Ernest Satow.

その昔、アーネスト・サトウという名の外交官がいました。

I think that's how you pronounce his last name.

（外国人ですが）彼の姓はサトウと発音するんですね。

He was one of the first diplomats in the Meiji Restoration.

彼は、明治維新の時代に来日した最初の外交官の一人でした。

He's almost kind of like the original YouTuber,

彼は元祖ユーチューバーとでも言うか、

he basically scoped out the area before a lot of other

他の外交官や多くの人々がこのエリアに押しかける前に、

diplomats and other people came to Japan,

ここを発掘しました。

built a family and a life here and didn't go back home

家族を作り、ここに住み、

until his 25 years of work here were done.

日本での25年間の仕事を終えるまで一度も帰国しませんでした。

All of his letters, his articles and the work that he did here

彼がここで書いた全ての手紙や記事、そして彼の行った仕事は、

showed other people the beauty of Japan and that it was ok to come here

日本の美しさを紹介し、明治維新後、開国した日本に来ても大丈夫だ

after Japan opened up with the Meiji Restoration.

This is the site of one of the original buildings and supposedly one of his favorite places to be.

この建物は当時のように復元されていて、たぶん彼のお気に入りの場所の一つだったのでしょう。

I can see why, the view is amazing!

We're having a full course of fish, sweet potato soup,

there's a fish-based dish that has the “senjogahara” theme,

it's like the ancient battle field where the two mountains nearby where battling.

そんな地元の伝説をテーマとした魚料理の後は、肉料理です。フランス語で「フィレ・ドゥ・バフ」、つまり牛フィレ肉がサーブされ、

a dessert, coffee and some wine! Cheers!

Oh yeah. This is good!

So the next course is a steak with a red wine and a beet sauce.

お次は、赤ワインとビーツのソースを添えたステーキ。

Along with some sweet potatoes, onion, broccoli…

Mmm! I have no words.

Good morning, everyone! Welcome to a beautiful Day 2 in Nikko.

おはようございます！　日光での二日目にようこそ。

After eating dinner I stayed here in Chuzenji Kanaya Hotel.

昨夜はディナーの後、ここ中禅寺金谷ホテルに宿泊しました。

It's a really cool building, I've never seen a place like this.

すごく素敵な建物で、こんな場所は初めてです。

It's almost like a mountain lodge or something like that. It still has Yukata and onsen as well.

どこか山の中にあるロッジみたい。でも浴衣と温泉もちゃんとあるの。

Old western meets Japanese onsen relaxation style.

昔の西洋のスタイルが、日本の温泉のくつろぎと出会うとこうなるんですね。

For the rest of the day I'm going to keep up this old west meets Japanese theme.

旅の残りの時間は、西洋と日本の出会いをテーマに過ごしたいと思います。

I should probably pack up and hit the road soon.

Welcome to Toshogu Shrine.

東照宮へようこそ！

Recognize these 3 monkeys?

ここに三猿がいますよ。

A lot of people think this place is about the 3 monkeys,

多くの人が、東照宮は三猿のお寺と認識していますが、

but it's actually to protect horses.

三猿は実は馬を守護するためにいるんです。

Toshogu is a must-see stop in Nikko.

東照宮は、日光の中で絶対に見るべき場所。

A lot of people think it's because of the three monkeys over there

多くの人は、三猿のために立ち寄ると思いますが、

そもそも日光という土地が、

but in reality what this area is really known for is the shrine back here,

このお寺があることで有名になりました。

which is to memorialize one of the biggest shogunate in Japanese history: Tokugawa Ieyasu.

ここは、日本の歴史で最も重要な将軍である徳川家康を祀っています。

So the name looks similar but this is the Nikko Kanaya Hotel.

名前は似ているけれど、ここは日光金谷ホテルです。

There's a special menu item you can try here: it's curry!

ここで食べられるスペシャルメニューが、こちらのカレーです！

Curry is very popular across Japan and there are different styles,

カレーは日本中で愛されている料理で、いろいろなスタイルがありますが、

but this one has a very specific recipe that goes all the way back to the Taisho era.

ここのカレーは、大正時代のレシピを再現して作られています。

This hotel was built in the 6th year of the Meiji era, which makes it about 1873 in western time.

このホテルは明治６年、西暦で言うと1873年に建てられました。

Since then they've taken the recipe and made it their own with coconut milk, etc.

ココナッツミルクなどを加えて作った伝統の味は、その当時のままです。

Let's give it a try!

では、いただきましょう！

First there was a smoothness, the curry flavor,

まず滑らかさとカレーの風味が口の中に広がり、

and then the sweetness which I assume is the coconut milk.

次に、多分ココナッツミルクだと思いますが、甘さを感じます。

There's something floral in there dancing at the top,

そして、何か花のような香りが弾けて、

and then the heat at the end.

最後にピリッとした辛さが来ました。

It kind of kicks you in the back of the throat.

喉の奥にガツンと来る辛さですが、これがなかなか良いです。

It has a good heat that balances everything at the end.

この辛さが、全てを調和させています。

This curry has a lot to say! I like it.

深い味わいのカレーですね。とても美味しいです。

Oh yeah, I'm a fan.

いいね、これ大好き。

There's a famous wall that points out all the names of famous people who stayed at the hotel.

このホテルに滞在した有名人の名前を掲示してある有名な壁です。

We need to get on the train in about one hour,

あと１時間ほどで電車に乗らないといけないのですが、

but I wanted to check out this place that's been on my bucket list.

私の”やってみたいことリスト”の中にあることをしちゃいます。

That is an accurately packed train!

まさに満員電車！

Game time guys! I could pick up each little person.

ゲームの時間だよ！　この小さい人たちを摘んじゃおうかな。

New York and Tokyo, 10-second walk, no plane ticket. This is my dream.

ニューヨークと東京が、歩いてほんの10秒。飛行機も要らない。これって私の夢だな。

This is Horyu-ji, in Nara. But this is the first time I've seen Nara with no deer inside.

これは奈良の法隆寺です。奈良なのに鹿がいないなんて初めてかも。

Where are the deer?! Are you in there?!

鹿はどこ？　そこにいるかな？

Where are they!?

どこに行っちゃったの？

Yakushi-ji Temple. This is still Nara, still not deer.

薬師寺です。ここも奈良だけど、やっぱり鹿がいない。

Nijojo, castle from Kyoto.

京都の二条城。

Not too many tourists today!

今日は観光客少なめだね！

Guys, it's Kyoto but I found there deer. There!

みんな！　ここは京都なのに、鹿がいました！

It's in that Kanji. There's the deer.

ほら、ここ！　この漢字、”鹿”だよ！

Train's here guys, it's time to go!

そろそろ電車に乗って帰る時間です。

So time is up for this adventure in Nikko and it's time to head back to Asakusa in Tokyo.

日光でのお楽しみはもうそろそろ終えて、東京の浅草に向かって出発です。
