When it's a product with which I am unfamiliar, I sometimes find myself selecting the one emblazoned with the Amazons Choice moniker. Of course, Amazon does not publish how it chooses these products, so I devised a little non scientific proxy test to see if it's a reliable designation. I conducted an Amazon search for quote high security padlocks and purchased for evaluation, the one that Amazon chose. And this is it. It is the Lexx Pond atomic key shutter lock. At least that's what it's called on Amazon. The only branding that I saw on the lock or the packaging is C Q C. Now what first blush? It appears pretty impressive about £2.4 of steel or iron. Then we have a 13 millimeter sliding bolt shackle and a six pin dimple core. But looks can be deceiving. This is actually a poorly made Chinese copy of this lock the eye fam, huh? No. 80 an Italian made C E n Grade five shutter lock. If you're interested in an in depth comparison between these two products, Ah, leave a link to video 1 92 in the description below where I do exactly that. But today is all about seeing how much pick resistance is provided by Amazons Choice for a high security padlock. So the first thing we need to do is get some tension in that core, and then I'm going to be using this dimple rake and just that quickly, we got it open. Let's do that a couple more times so you can see that it was not a fluke. Once again, we got it open, and one last time again, we got it open. So as you saw Amazons, choice for a high security padlock provides laughably little protection against picking. Let's actually take this apart so you can see just how poorly made the core is. To do that, we need to unlock it and slide the shackle halfway out. Once we do that, I'm going to get a thin shim of metal, slide it in between the shackle and the lock body, and then I need to rotate it 180 degrees. So what's blocking the lug that would hold the shackle in place once I pulled that out. We should be able to turn this upside down and the core will slide out. There we go. So we have a very rough cast iron core with a loosely fitting cast brass plug in the middle. Unfortunately, I can't take this apart further, at least not non destructively. But I did so in video number 1 92 So if you're interested in seeing that again, the link is in the description. In any case, I think you're getting the general idea that Amazon's choice for a high security padlock should not be your choice. That's all I have for you today.
