  • tackle it here.

  • Welcome back to coffee time.

  • I have a special announcement to make.

  • Today.

  • I'm moving back in with my parents.

  • That's right.

  • As a fully grown adult man, a mother here, this apartment.

  • It costs about $4000 a month, and I'm getting rid of it because it just doesn't make sense anymore.

  • For me, 2019 has been absolutely ridiculous.

  • I started this year with a fully intact family, a wife, a kid, a good job over at Facebook, work, answer staff, software engineer And somewhere halfway.

  • Everything just went through trash so fast my marriage fell apart.

  • I was fired from my job, and these are really the two components that really keep you locked down and anchored somewhere.

  • They justify the reason for only in your own place an apartment.

  • But now, after 4 to 5 years of living that married life, everything just vanished.

  • And so I really don't have any good reason to be here.

  • And by the way, I would recommend you guys also to be moving back in with your parents because it's cool now or you haven't heard it's trendy these days to be living with your parents.

  • I'm making it cool because there are so many benefits to living with their parents.

  • Number one cooking, doing laundry that can usually be combined.

  • It doesn't cause anybody in the additional work, really, and you can just benefit from that, so you don't have to do that.

  • It saves you a ton of time.

  • In that regard, a lot of things can be shared, like Internet Bill's utility water guess, furniture, small kitchen appliances, washer dryer, vacuum cleaners, tables, chairs, pots and pans, even food.

  • Amazon prime subscriptions, not to mention pet.

  • Right now, my parents are taking care of my dog, who I absolutely love.

  • But as a single person living here, I just don't have the band with to be taking care of a pet.

  • But if I were to go live with my parents, I can spend more time with my dog.

  • And then the maintenance burden of taking care of this pen is just shared among many people going out to restaurants like if it's a family type of restaurant, I could just sample more different types of food is just fun or more social.

  • I have my support network.

  • I can ask people to help do things for me.

  • So it really makes a lot of sense.

  • I would say, for single people who don't really have a strong reason to be living on their own, they just be living with their parents.

  • Sure, you can go live with some roommates, but you know, that really just multiplies the cost.

  • Like if you have four roommates living together, you just have four people wasting money.

  • And the biggest savings is not so much about money.

  • It is about the time that you were able to save my time is extremely valuable.

  • And if there's other people who could help take care of small, little misleading, these tasks for me and there were turned, I also helped do my share of the housework in chores.

  • Then everybody is just able to benefit in the symbiotic relationship.

  • I believe that back in the day in China or something, people would just you would have multigenerational families just all living within one roof, and I have a feeling that as we approach the future as we have pushed the digital age in which people are able to work remotely, we're going to get back to that because think about it.

  • What causes you to live in your apartment?

  • What made you move out beyond just for dating reasons which in my opinion, cannot justify 2 to $4000 worth of monthly rent is just not worth it.

  • If you want to date, you can just get a hotel.

  • So, really, the reason is number one, your parents are living in, like, the middle of Idaho, and then you want to go work in the city.

  • So, yeah, that's a reason you need the job.

  • But think about that as people start to work online and remotely, and I have a feeling that one day in the future, everybody would just be working remotely.

  • There's not going to be a need for people to be living in expensive cities like San Francisco, New York, London.

  • Actually, people would just want to go live and say Hawaii.

  • If you could work remotely, then sure, why not?

  • And then the second reason is there just may not be enough space in the house.

  • You know, maybe you have a family.

  • And at that point, then yeah, I would say you could be moving out.

  • You can start your own little unit.

  • But barring that heavy and family, I just can't seem to justify in my head why I would be spending thousands of dollars a month on the place just so that I can feel the sense of independence, which is something.

  • It's an outdated concept that was invented after the second war about the whole nuclear family unit.

  • But in reality it's probably set America back decades just because of the amount of time and money and resources that we've been waiting on this stuff on the independent life.

  • And the other thing is, you may think that living out here, you were able to gain your own freedom quite the opposite.

  • You just shackled and chained yourself to this apartment when I moved back home, then I would truly have freedom.

  • I'll be able to just travel.

  • I don't have to take care of this place.

  • I'll have freed up a lot of my funds so I could just go travel wherever I want to go.

  • And I could use my parents home as kind of like a base where I returned to, occasionally just to stock up, refuel on supplies and that can be out and going about again.

  • And so it's quite the opposite.

  • If you're truly looking for freedom, then you need to be getting rid of your stuff.

  • Getting rid of your contract with your apartment, Your you to lead the bills.

  • Internet builds all the other stuff that you have to take care of, such that you can just go out and be yourself in the world.

  • Now I know there's a social stigma attached with this, and all of your friends are going to be laughing at you.

  • And if I were a weaker men than I would not be able to do this.

  • But I'm a kn influencer.

  • I'm in the position where I'm able to define what is cool, what is not cool.

  • And I'm telling you, as a successful person in their mid thirties, moving back in with your parents is the best thing you can ever do.

  • It's cool again.

  • It is the host of lifestyle.

  • If you wanted the entrepreneurial lifestyle, you wanted it.

  • You wanted to be successful.

  • This is the way to do it.

  • It frees up your time, your money, your mobility.

  • It just opens up a lot of opportunities.

  • If you think about that.

  • What costs the most in your life?

  • It's your rent.

  • By far, your apartment is just ridiculous.

  • Over here in the Bay Area, I would say standard rent is like $2500 a month.

  • Yeah, and may even be 3000 month.

  • And if you take a look at that over 12 months, that's like $36,000 a year after tax income.

  • So in order to pay for something like that, you would need to be generating 50 K annual salary just to break even on this apartment.

  • Just break even on that.

  • You're just working to sustain a lifestyle that you hate and you're not really getting anywhere.

  • You're not saving anything.

  • You're just slaving away and being underpaid, By the way.

  • Now, some of you may be wondering, Well, what happens if your parents are out living in the middle of Idaho and you can just move in with them in order to work your job?

  • Well, my recommendation would actually be Perhaps your parents should move into the city with you and get rid of their place in either hope.

  • So the idea is, your parents raised you.

  • You go to school, you go through college graduate, then it's time to get a job.

  • You need to move into a big city to find those opportunities.

  • Everybody just lick with Ace.

  • The house and the whole family moves into state like San Francisco or something like that, or a little bit out of there.

  • So it's a little cheaper.

  • And then everybody can be living there and saving on costs and is not really so much the cost.

  • But there's also that time aspect, like you're just able to free up a lot of time so you don't have to do all of your own cooking, cleaning house chores.

  • Other people can help take care of that for you share in some of that burden.

  • I mean, your parents probably have nothing better to do, not to mention you get the support network.

  • Everybody gets a safe on living costs.

  • Now, with about independence, social independence, being able to go out and date people well, I think that's electorate.

  • If you're gonna be paying 3000 month just for this capability, like think about if you're to get a hotel once a week at 200 bucks a night.

  • That's like 100 bucks, and it gives you so much more flexibility.

  • You can be going around different places each time making your dating life, your social life much more exciting as well.

  • So I like to imagine myself as somebody living in the future.

  • I don't like the idea of people 50 or 100 years from now, laughing at me, laughing at the way I had to live.

  • So think about it.

  • If people 50 100 years from now they're working remotely, what type of lifestyle would they live?

  • So here's how I imagine life in the future.

  • Probably nobody would be living in big cities like New York, London, San Francisco.

  • They wouldn't do that anymore, simply because people don't want to be there and locked down on the city gets boring after, say, a month or two.

  • And then people would just want to be traveling around.

  • Maybe they'll spend a few months in each city a few months here and they're going around.

  • Maybe some time in Hawaii or more likely, people will live in mild, temperate, comfortable climates like, say, somewhere in California.

  • And then they'll get other family together and did you set up a base there, and then most of the time people would just be traveling, going around three months here and there.

  • Maybe you spent three months in New York.

  • Three months in London, three months in Tokyo checkup, Hawaii for a bit.

  • And people would just be traveling around because there's just absolutely nothing locking anybody down.

  • Anyone can just be working remotely from anywhere anyway.

  • All of the money that you would have spent on, say, $3000 on the apartment rent.

  • You just put that into traveling, maybe a few hotel fees here and there.

  • And then we live at home occasionally just to save up some cause.

  • And that's probably what life's gonna look like in the future.

  • And any of your friends who would say they're just going to go sign the whole one year lease over and say, New York.

  • That would be as ridiculous as somebody saying they wouldn't sign the whole one year lease over in Hawaii.

  • I mean, nobody except save Mango farmers really does that.

  • It's a chain.

  • It locks it down.

  • And no matter how great that destination, who really wants to sign up for a one year lease in something like that, you just lose other diversity.

  • So most people would just be floating around.

  • Except when you get a family, you'd probably have to lock down somewhere, get somewhere space.

  • Kids need that stability.

  • And then people would just pick somewhere suburban, maybe near wherever their family happened to be.

  • And so, from this perspective, it makes complete sense for me to just get rid of this apartment.

  • Because why am I even here when live in paying $4000 a month for a job?

  • I'm not working here for family.

  • That's not even here.

  • It's just me here in expensive Silicon Valley.

  • Now that said, there are a lot of things I would miss about this place.

  • There's a great Jacuzzi, a gym.

  • I have my only dependence or some good nature paths around here.

  • I like having my own space of focus.

  • My desk over here, this desk is amazing.

  • I said that I love I have fiber optic Internet, but none of that is worth $4000 a month.

  • And I thought about well, maybe I should just move into somewhere smaller, like a place that cost 2000 bucks a month and could get my own place set up.

  • But the more I think about this, like, why would I even just chain myself down to any of this?

  • Because my other savings and money and time, it's just going to be so much greater than any of these small little niceties that I would have so live at home with your parents until there's really a strong reason for you to move out.

  • It's cool, is great.

  • It's trendy to be moving in with your parents.

  • I would do it.

  • And hey, you know what?

  • Even if you have a family, maybe she's still move in with your parents.

  • So that would do for me.

  • Let me know how your conversation goes with your partner about moving in with your parents.
