This is the lock picking lawyer, and what I have for you today is a Mason Automotive Key lock box.
This product is designed to fit over the top of a car window and secure inside the key to that car.
This arrangement makes sense in a couple of different scenarios.
The first is an auto dealership in which the sales staff would only need to carry a single key to access any car on the lot.
And in fact, when you search for this product on the Internet, most of the results are online stores catering to auto dealerships.
The second scenario where you might see a lock like this is in the government or corporate auto fleet management context.
The box itself is pretty unimpressive.
It's made from a zinc casting.
And if you've watched my channel for long, you know that zinc is generally a terrible choice for locks.
That's because it has a very low melting temperature.
I may do a follow up video in the future, showing that exploit on this particular lock.
The core is a cheap Chinese made tubular can lock, and it's by exploiting the weaknesses of this core that we can open one of these boxes in just a few moments.
In fact, almost a CE fast is using.
The key will be using one of these impression ING tools.
They're designed to open tubular locks that have equal strength springs and equal length driver pins Inside.
With those two design elements, a tool like this can apply equal force simultaneously to each of the pins and essentially create a new key.
It sounds complicated, but let me show you it in action.
We'll start with the picking wires all being flush with the end of the tool.
And then I'm going to insert this into the lock and apply a inward and twisting motion at the same time.
Just that quickly, we got it open.
This vulnerability is in my opinion, malpractice and lock design issues have been well known and documented for several decades, and the fact that I still often find locks with this weakness is a testament to the current sorry state of loch design.
In any case, that's all I have for you today.
