  • Hi, I'm Stef.

  • And today I'm doing a trial run of all the most iconic looks from the fifties.

  • Basically, I've never really had style, and I don't really connect with people my age are wearing today.

  • So I brought in Rice he here to see if she could help me find any inspiration from the 19 fifties.

  • Right?

  • So you are a fashion historian who has lectured internationally.

  • You've worked on exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Our and Done Costume was holding for a bunch of film and TV shows, and today you get to work with me.

  • Thank you stuff.

  • I am really excited to share five iconic looks for my favorite time period with you and each one you'll get to try on and fully experience.

  • Are you ready?

  • Let's go.

  • First step.

  • The new look theme New Look was created by Christian Dior in 1947 but ended up defining the recognizable styles of the 19 fifties.

  • This high fashion look ushered in the golden age of couture and was a turning point in fashion history.

  • So this look is all about the undergarments to create that iconic 19 fifties silhouette.

  • So we're going to give you a waist slimming boost E a and a very full petty coat to create the shape.

  • Okay, Looks a little bit tight.

  • It iss So how does it feel?

  • Tight.

  • Perfect.

  • Next, we're going to give you this fit and flare dress with a very voluminous skirt to go over that petticoat.

  • Then we're going to d'oh Ah, very tailored jacket.

  • And it will really accentuate that wasp boys.

  • I am known for my wasp waist final touch.

  • We're going to top it off with a hat like a Frisbee.

  • So let's put these on now.

  • I brought my friend Destiny, who's a professional vintage hairstylist and makeup artists to really complete the look.

  • So we'll start with hair because the head is such a feature.

  • We want the hair to be sleek and pulled back in a French twist.

  • Allah Joan Fontaine.

  • We're going to try to recreate the iconic January 1950 cover of Vogue.

  • The eyebrows will be darkened high and arched, for the eyes will have a bold winged liner and a hint of green eye shadow.

  • And finally, a deep, full red lip for that sultry editorial.

  • Look.

  • Look, Ridge, I feel like a fancy lady.

  • It's kind of a fight for attention between the lips and the eyes because they're both very colorful and bold.

  • And the eyebrows okay, I didn't know that I could have such nice eyebrows.

  • The gloves are the most elegant part of this.

  • I kind of just want to keep them around my face and do various vote poses with them.

  • The boost IAI is very intense.

  • My ribs hurt.

  • I kind of feel like a Kardashian, but from a different time period, I think to test this.

  • Look out.

  • I gotta go outside, make fashion happens strut my stuff by Manhattan's Hudson River.

  • I just got back inside.

  • My first reaction is that I wish they had better winter jackets and coats in the 19 fifties because it is gold outside.

  • Given that the makeup is so bold, I also felt bold.

  • I was looking at things with purpose.

  • I was walking with intention.

  • Andi think it all goes back to these like crazy dark brows and this, like bright lipstick let him wear.

  • And now for something totally different, we're going to try the collegiate look.

  • It was in the 19 fifties.

  • The teenagers were first recognised as their own distinct social group.

  • Youth culture was on the rise in music, dance and, of course, fashion.

  • First we have a schoolgirl stable, the crisp, white short sleeve shirt that'll be paired with a pleated plaid skirt, which happens to be reversible.

  • Then we'll add a coordinating and gore sweater draped over your shoulders and fastened with a sweater clip.

  • And finally, saddle shoes were ubiquitous amongst Children and teenagers, and they were almost always worn with white bobby socks.

  • You kind of look like bowling shoes.

  • Let's go back to high school again.

  • So this is the first time that beauty products were being marketed to teenagers, and they wanted a look that was really bright and youthful.

  • So the hair Stylist one we all know the pony tail, the dangling curls are gonna be soft and fluffy.

  • And then we're going to give you curly bangs right in front for makeup.

  • Thank rosy cheeks, lightly shadowed lids and a soft pink lip.

  • Think a very young Audrey Hepburn for the finishing touch.

  • A pair of tortoiseshell cat eye glasses.

  • Wow, this is not what I looked like in high school, so I look like I just stepped out of the biggest prom committee meeting ever.

  • The glasses.

  • I'm a big fan of the shape, and I feel very studious.

  • Wearing them the ponytail makes me feel like I am 15 years old, but I guess that's appropriate for high school.

  • The light pink cheeks make my face look really Rosie, which I like, but it is a little bit much, so I'd probably tone it down if I was gonna wear it today.

  • So I do love a good card again.

  • However, I usually wear them with my arms in them as they were supposed to be worn.

  • Right now, it kind of feels like a weird Cape thing now what teenagers do.

  • In the 19 fifties, they went to Sok Cops.

  • I am here with professional swing dancer Gabby Cook, who's gonna show me how to get down like it's 1955.

  • Let's try that again and let's adjust instead of taking like a big step like that.

  • Little delicate.

  • Sure.

  • Are you ready for something fancy?

  • I don't know.

  • Walk, walk, walk, please.

  • That's great.

  • Just keep practising things like that, and he will be ready to go to a sock hop.

  • So let's just put it this way.

  • I will not be changing careers anytime soon to become a swing dancer, but I will say this skirt looked really fun when I was twirling and my bang stayed in place.

  • May favorite thing is definitely the shirt.

  • I have a 1,000,000 shirts that look like this, and I like how it's buttoned all the way to the top.

  • My least favorite part about this look has gotta be the bags in the hair.

  • I look a little bit too young, and I don't think I would look normal wearing this in 2019.

  • Next thing I have for you is the overnight look.

  • Mid century sleepwear was a fashion in and of itself.

  • The dressy ladies of the 19 fifties wouldn't be caught dead in an oversized T shirt and boxer shorts.

  • What's more, it was prime time for your beauty regime because your beauty sleep was essential.

  • Nightgowns and robes were often purchased is matching pen noir sets from department stores or mail order catalogs, and like this one, they were often made of lightweight synthetics.

  • People are going to sleep in this Yes, no boxers and T shirt.

  • No time to call it a night.

  • Probably the most important aspect of the overnight look is the next day's hair prep.

  • A set using rollers or pin curls was essential to executing any 19 fifties hairstyle, and a woman would either set her own hair overnight or visit a salon once a week to have it set by a stylist.

  • We're going to have destiny do a pin curl set for you.

  • Inspired by a setting patterns from the April 1955 issue of Glamour, we're going to take small sections of hair and spray each one with a diluted setting lotion before wrapping it around your finger and pinning the curl into place.

  • After the setting pattern is complete, we're going to cover these precious pin curls with sleeping bonnet so they don't get ruined overnight, of course, skincare became just as important as cosmetics in the world of beauty.

  • Before bed, a woman would remove her makeup using cold cream and then apply it again as a mask to cleanse and moisturize face.

  • Finally, she would apply any additional night creams like those made popular by pioneering cosmetics queen Helena Rubinstein.

  • So apparently, if you do your hair like this.

  • It last for a week.

  • And honestly, it better because it took so long.

  • It feels really good to have all this makeup off, but the cold cream was super gooey.

  • I don't know.

  • This look is very reminiscent of my grandma, so I kind of feel in old.

  • It is really pretty.

  • I just I think it's a lot for sleepwear.

  • So to fully experience this look, I'm gonna go home and go to bed, so I'll check back in when I get home.

  • Okay, So I'm finally home.

  • I am so exhausted, but luckily my curls air still in place.

  • They God, I've never done overnight hair routine.

  • This is like the most extra thing in the world.

  • But hopefully they look good tomorrow.

  • And it was all worth it, because this is insanity.

  • Before I go to bed, there's one last thing I have to do, which is put this bonnet on to protect my curls so that they still look good tomorrow.

  • Oh, that doesn't look right.

  • Okay.

  • Good night.

  • Good morning.

  • It's time for the big reveal to see how my pin girls held up overnight.

  • Wow.

  • But actually look pretty much the same.

  • They held up great.

  • Sleeping in the bottom was actually not a problem at all.

  • I didn't even notice that I had all these pins in my hair.

  • I gotta say, it didn't love sleeping in the nightgown.

  • He kept getting caught on my blankets and my sheets and was waking me up throughout the night.

  • So they think that T shirts and shorts are definitely something I appreciate in the modern age.

  • Anyways, I'm excited to get back in the studio today.

  • Take these pin girls out and see what my hair looks like.

  • So I gotta go.

  • I'll check back with you later.

  • Welcome back.

  • It's good to see that your pin curl set held up because it's gonna make all the difference for our first look of the day, This starlet the 19 fifties saw the climax of Hollywood cinema's golden age and movie stars embody the height of glamour and beauty.

  • Perhaps the most iconic of 19 fifties movie stars was, of course, Marilyn Monroe, so for this look will be borrowing different elements from some of her most recognizable looks.

  • So first we have a pleated white halter dress that's reminiscent of the one that she wore in that famous subway grate scene.

  • We're gonna pair that with a white first, stole an elbow length gloves like those that she wore to the premiere of How to Marry a Millionaire in 1953.

  • So is this really for it is a true vintage 19 fifties for and back then there wasn't the same consciousness about wearing real fur as we have now, but we thought it would lend a touch of authenticity to this experience of old Hollywood glamour.

  • Finally, we're going to frost you with diamonds in the style of gentlemen prefer blondes.

  • Time to get glammed up for the hair.

  • It's finally time to brush out that pin curl set.

  • First, we're going to remove the pins, and you're gonna have some crazy, tight, bouncy curls that we're going to brush out to create soft, wavy curls.

  • Then we're going to tease the hair, the roots to create volume, and from there will shape the hair into that signature swoop for makeup.

  • We're going to use Maryland's own tricks of the trade to recreate her classic look.

  • First, we're going to create darkened eyebrows with the pointed arch next, we're going to give you showgirl style eyeliner with a black cat eye on the lid and brown eyeliner extended outward on the bottom and a line of white between the two to open up the eyes.

  • Next, we're going to add dramatic false eyelashes to accentuate that sultry look for those pouty lips were going to layer multiple shades of red to create dimension and set them with powder to create the illusion of a fuller lip.

  • We will add a dab of highlighter right in the center and finally will use eyeliner to create that famous beauty Mark.

  • 00 my God, this is so fun.

  • Okay, I have a lot to say about this.

  • Look, first of all, as someone who used to draw freckles on myself in middle school, this beauty mark is really speaking to me.

  • But I don't think I get away with it because I probably wouldn't draw it in the same place every day if I attempted to do this Destiny put like so many things on my lips.

  • She put highlighter on there.

  • I didn't even know you could put that on your lips.

  • But it looks awesome.

  • My lips look very full.

  • This is the biggest via lashes have ever been.

  • And I love it.

  • I would wear my lashes like this if I was going out today.

  • Eyebrows super bold.

  • I didn't think that I was gonna like them, because usually I go for subtlety, but I'm actually kind of feeling them.

  • Even though he did complain about the pin girls in the bonnet for the overnight look, I think it was worth it because my hair looks awesome.

  • The white dress really makes me feel like a starlet.

  • I've seen that image of Marilyn Monroe so many times throughout my life, so I really feel like her.

  • And that's a really strange cool feeling.

  • All right, now that I'm really looking like Maryland, I think you know what I got to D'oh!

  • Okay, so we're going outside to find a subway grate.

  • Yesterday was cold, so hopefully today's a bit better.

  • I didn't Mr 11 Degrees.

  • I'm not all right.

  • So it was way too cold out.

  • So we're gonna try to see if we can make this happen indoors.

  • I don't know.

  • It's gonna get You're not all right.

  • Ready?

  • Wait.

  • Okay.

  • So we tried to blow the dress up with a fan.

  • It did not work.

  • So I sent my producer Jeff out to find something stronger hitting me.

  • So it was a little bit harder than expected to recreate that scene.

  • But I think I got a pretty good feel for it over all this.

  • Look me, we feel really glamorous.

  • If I was ever going to, like a fancy event or a gala, I would definitely dress up like this, minus the fur.

  • I really like how my hair hasn't moved.

  • Even with the leaf blower blowing directly at it, my makeup still looks good.

  • I'm kind of sad.

  • I have to get out of this.

  • Look, it's looking like our time together is coming to an end.

  • So our final look is American sportswear.

  • While Parisian fashion reign supreme in the world of couture, American style became firmly established as sportswear was adopted as everyday clothing.

  • The American look was worn by the modern active woman and came to represent the Postwar ideal of a fashionable suburban life.

  • Casual separates that prioritized comfort and practicality were the hallmark of the American look.

  • So we're going to give you a lightweight cotton shirt and a pair if it'd capri pants.

  • Finally pants.

  • Also look wouldn't be complete without a share scarf to protect your hair.

  • D'oh!

  • And, of course, a pair of fabulous sunglasses.

  • Last look for hair.

  • Your curls will be brushed out into a soft wave with one side tucked behind your ear.

  • Overall, the look is smooth and shiny in the style of Grace Kelly for makeup, we're going for a more natural daytime look with lightly pencil brows and a touch of lilac.

  • On the lids will add warm blush for a sun kissed complexion and bright coral colored lips.

  • Hello, everything about this Look, I am totally vibing with lilac eyeshadow.

  • I have never worn before, but I really like it.

  • I didn't think that the lilac and the quarrel and the yellow we're gonna go together.

  • I thought they were all gonna clash.

  • But somehow it's all come together really nicely.

  • This blush is a really warm, nice color.

  • I just like this whole look, makes me feel like it's summer.

  • This swoop thing is so cool.

  • These pants are very stretchy.

  • I'm so glad spandex was invented in the fifties.

  • The style of the shirt feels modern, but the pattern feels vintage.

  • So because this look makes me feel like it's summertime, I think I gotta have a picnic.

  • So it's a little bit too late and cold.

  • Have a picnic outside.

  • So my crew put together a picnic in this studio and invited two of my friends.

  • They have no idea that I'm dressed like this, so let's go see what happens.

  • Ladies, just Oh, I love it.

  • I'm sorry that this is such a weird location for a picnic, but it's so cold outside, and I just really wanted to get your opinions.

  • I like the pastel colors.

  • I think it really brings out the blush that's in your skin.

  • Let me show you.

  • Actually.

  • Okay, let's see the makeup because Low Lulu purple eye shadow.

  • Look at those lashes 12 miles long.

  • They're not really.

  • I could definitely wear my hair like you're wearing your hair.

  • It takes a long time.

  • That was the thing about the fifties that they slept with their hair and these like big pin curls.

  • She hurt.

  • No, it didn't hurt, but I had to wear a bonnet.

  • So that's the catch There aspects that actually really like Like I think the bag is very cool.

  • Definitely wearable now.

  • And the headscarf ideas?

  • Clothes?

  • Well, it's a very grace Kelly bad.

  • That's what we're going for.

  • Thank you both for coming.

  • Nose was a little bit unconventional, but cheers, Cheers, Cheers.

  • Picnic was tons of fun, and I'm glad I got to see my friends.

  • There's a big difference in feeling between wearing this look with like stretchy pants and a cotton shirt and then wearing like a course set in this.

  • I just feel a lot better.

  • I feel like I can move.

  • I feel like I can breathe it just way better for me.

  • In comparison to a lot of the other looks, this makeup is a lot more subdued and natural, which honestly, is just much more me and I feel like I could worry to my everyday life.

  • So shout out to the woman in the fifties who came up with this look because I'm absolutely digging it, and I'm really glad I got to try it out today.

  • This is my last look.

  • But before I go home, there is still someone I have to say.

  • Thank you to thank you so much.

  • I couldn't have asked for a better guide into the fifties.

  • You are so welcome.

  • I hope you had fun.

  • And maybe you can work some of this into your own personal style.

  • Well, I'm taking this headscarf home.

  • It's fabulous.

  • Five.

  • So looking back, I think my favorite look is the American look.

  • First of all, it was the only look with pants, and famously, I love wearing pants.

  • My favorite part was the scarf.

  • It had a lot of yellow in it, and I've never actually worn yellow before, but I was really drawn to it.

  • It even inspired me to go out and get this shirt.

  • I never would have thought to rely like eye shadow, especially with green eyes, but it actually looks really good.

  • I really liked the starlet.

  • Look, I've never weren't eyeliner on both my top and bottom lids, but it did make my eyes look even bigger than they already are, which I think is a good thing.

  • In the new look, we used a really dark red lip and green eye shadow, which made me stand out and use them more toned back person in terms of my makeup and my looks, but I kind of did feel nice to be seen so things I didn't like, I'd never wear the hat that I wore in the new look.

  • The bangs in the collegiate look made me feel really young.

  • And while the nightgown was elegant, I do think for now I'm going to stick to boxers and a T shirt.

  • Overall, 19 fifties style was way different than what I see today, and everything kind of felt a little bit costing me for that reason.

  • I do think that in each look, there are elements that reflect my personal style and that I can mix and match with stuff that they already have in my closet.

  • I'm really happy that I did this.

  • I feel like I learned a lot about myself and the fifties, so thanks for watching.

  • And you, ese.
