through a brief history of vampires,

ヴァンパイアの歴史について ご案内しよう

illustrating how our image has changed

我々のイメージが どんな風に変わってきたか

from a shambling corpse

動き回る死体から

to the dapper gentleman you see before you.

Vampires are nearly as old as you humans.

ヴァンパイアの歴史は 君たち人間のように長い

Stories about us, our evidence,

我々の物語や痕跡は

appear in cultures extending

先史時代までさかのぼって

as far back as prehistoric times.

文化の発達とともに 読み解くことができるのだ

But we weren't called vampires back then

and most of us did not look the way

we imagine vampires today,

far from it!

For example, the Mesopotamian Lamashtu

was a creature with a head of a lion

and the body of the donkey,

毛深いロバの体躯をもち

and the ancient Greek striges

古代ギリシアのフクロウは

were simply described as bloodthirsty birds.

血に飢えた鳥だと しるされている

Others were even stranger.

他にも不気味なものがあるぞ

The Philippine manananggal would sever her upper torso

フィリピンのマナナンガルは 夜になると下半身を切り離し

and sprout huge, bat-like wings to fly.

背中にコウモリの翼を生やして 空を飛ぶのだ

The Malaysian Penanggalan was a flying female head

マレーシアのペナンガランは 空を飛びまわる女の首の姿で

with dangling entrails.

胃袋と内臓を ぶら下げている

And the Australian Yara-ma-yha-who

was a little red guy with a big head,

Though they may look vastly different,

all of these beings have one common characteristic:

This shared trait is what defines a vampire --

So, how do we arrive

at the reanimated fellow you see before you?

Our modern ideal emerges

現代のような姿は

in 18th-century Eastern Europe.

18世紀の東ヨーロッパで 生まれたのだ

With the dramatic increase of vampire superstitions,

ヴァンパイア迷信の 驚異的な広がりにより

stories of bloodsucking, shadowy creatures

吸血にまつわる物語や 闇の世界の生きものが

become nightly bedside terrors.

夜な夜な語られる 恐怖の物語になったのである

And popular folklore,

そして 人気を博している

like the moroi among the Romani people

ルーマニア発祥のモロイや

and the lugat in Albania,

アルバニアのルガト といった伝説は

provide the most common vampire traits known today,

現在 最も知られているような ヴァンパイアの特徴を有しており

such as vampires being undead

それはヴァンパイアが不死身で

and nocturnal

夜行性で

and shape-shifting.

変身できることが共通している

You see, Eastern Europe in the 18th century

18世紀の東ヨーロッパと言えば

was a pretty grim place

かなり憂うつな時代だったんだ

with many deaths occurring

未知の病から伝染病まで

from unknown diseases and plagues.

死にまつわる病が まん延していたのだ

Without medical explanations,

医学が未熟だったので

people searched for supernatural causes

人々は迷信に その発生源を頼り

and found what looked like evidence

死体にある手掛かりから

in the corpses of the victims.

それらしい理由を見つけたのだ

When villagers dug up bodies

不可解な死を解明するため

to discern the cause of the mysterious deaths,

村人が墓場を掘り返したとき

they would often find the cadavers

looking very much alive --

生きているように 見えることがあった

longer hair and fingernails,

髪や爪が伸びているように 見えたり

bloated bellies,

腹部がふくらんでいたり

and blood at the corners of mouths.

Heh heh, clearly, these people were not really dead.

ヒヒ どうやら彼らは 死んでいなかったようだ

Heh, they were vampires!

ヴァンパイアだったのだ！

And they had been leaving their graves

彼らは人間の血を求めて

to feast on the living.

夜な夜な 墓から 抜け出していたのだ

The terrified villagers would quickly enact

これに震え上がった村人は ヴァンパイアを ―

a ritual to kill the undead.

退治するための 儀式をはじめたのだ

The practices varied across the region,

退治方法は地域によって 様々だが

but usually included beheadings,

一般的なのは頭を切断したり

burnings,

燃やしたり

and staking the body to the coffin

二度と起き上がらないように

to prevent it from getting up.

棺ごと杭を打ち込んだり

Grizzly stuff!

なんて残酷なやり方！

But what the villagers interpreted as unholy reanimation,

でも村人が罪深い生き返りだと とらえた現象は

they're actually normal symptoms of death.

じつは死体に通常 表れる 兆候だったのだ

When a body decomposes,

死体が腐敗していくとき

the skin dehydrates,

表皮の乾燥による理由から

causing the hair and fingernails to extend.

髪や爪が伸びるようなことが あるのだ

Bacteria in the stomach creates gases

腹部にいるバクテリアが ガスを発生し

that fill the belly,

お腹を膨らませていて

which force out blood and matter through the mouth.

これが血や生前に摂取した物を 口に戻していたのである

Unfortunately, this science was not yet known,

残念なことに この分野の科学が 未熟だったので

so the villagers kept digging.

村人は墓を掘り返し続けたのだ

In fact, so many bodies were dug up

事実 おびただしい数の死体が 掘り起こされたので

that the Empress of Austria sent

オーストリアの女帝は

her physician around to disprove the vampire stories,

ヴァンパイア伝説を反証するため 医師を派遣したのだ

and she even established a law

prohibiting grave tampering.

Still, even after the vampire hunts had died down,

the stories of legends survived

in local superstition.

This led to works of literature,

such as Polidori's "The Vampyre,"

the Gothic novel "Carmilla,"

and, most famously, Bram Stoker's "Dracula."

Although Stoker incorporated historical material,

As we saw,

maybe you met my relatives,

a huge of variety of creatures stalked the night

before Dracula,

そしてドラキュラだ

and many more will continue

to creep through our nightmares.

これからも色んな 魔物が現れるだろう

Yet, so long as they subsist

ヴァンパイアが 生けるものの命によって

off a living being's life force,

命を永らえる限り

they are part of my tribe.

我々は生き続けるのだ

Even sparkling vampires can be included.

キラキラ輝く ヴァンパイアでさえもな

After all, it's the continued storytelling

実は このように 語り継がれることで

and reimagining of the vampire legend

ヴァンパイア伝説が 様々な形で生きながらえ

that allows us to truly live

我々は真に生き続けるのだ
