Once upon a time,

むかしむかし

there was a little girl who lived in a small village.

小さな村に小さな女の子が住んでいました

Her grandmother, who lived on the other side of the village,

村の反対側に住んでいる その子のおばあちゃんが

had made her a pretty red riding hood.

かわいい赤いずきんを つくってあげたのです

She loved it so much that she wore it everywhere she went.

その子はとても気に入って どこへ行くにもずきんをつけていきました

The people in the village got so used to seeing her in it,

村の人たちも いつもその姿を見ていて

that they took to calling her Little Red Riding Hood.

その子のことを 赤ずきんと呼ぶようになりました

One day her mother called her over.

ある日 お母さんが赤ずきんを呼びました

Little Red Riding Hood,

赤ずきんや

please bring this basket to your grandmother's house.

このかごを おばあちゃんの家に届けてちょうだい

Hmm, smells good

うーん いいにおい

She is very ill and cannot get out of bed.

おばあちゃんは重い病気で ベッドから出られないの

Taking the basket, Little Red Riding Hood started down the road.

赤ずきんはかごを持って 道を降りていきました

Hurry dear! Grandma must be very hungry.

急いでね おばあちゃんはおなかをすかしているわ

I will, Mother!

わかったわ

Remember, don't talk to strangers you meet on the road

道で会った人と 話しちゃだめよ

and always keep to the main path.

それから 寄り道しちゃだめよ

Don't worry Mother, I'll remember!

心配ないわ わかってるから

...and with that, Little Red Riding Hood walked off in the direction of her grandmother's house with the basket in her hand.

こうして赤ずきんは 手にかごを持ち おばあちゃんの家へと向かいました

Little Red Riding Hood continued to follow the path until it led into a forest.

まっすぐ進むと 赤ずきんは森に入りました

As she passed through the forest, a wolf appeared from behind the bushes.

森を歩いていると しげみから おおかみが現れました

Hello, there Little Red Riding Hood.

こんにちは 赤ずきん

Hello. How are you?

おおかみさん こんにちは

Where are you off to in such a hurry?

そんなに急いで どこへ行くんだい

I am on my way to visit my Grandma.

おばあちゃんの家よ

Oh, I see. What have you got in that basket there?

そうかい そのかごには何が入ってるんだい

It's bread and wine for my Grandma. She's very ill.

パンとワインよ おばあちゃんは重い病気なの

Is she?

そうなの

You must be a very nice little girl. Does she live far?

君はいい子だね おばあちゃんは家は遠いのかい

Not really, her house is just over the hill, next to the three oak trees.

遠くないわ 丘の向こうよ 3本のかしの木のとなりよ

The wolf's mouth watered as he formed an evil plan in his head

おおかみは悪だくみをしながら つばを飲み込みました

Hmmm.....

うーん

first I can gobble up the Grandma, then I'll swallow Little Red Riding Hood,

まずおばあちゃんをたいらげて それから赤ずきんを飲み込もう

and then I can wash them down with the treats in that basket!

そして かごのごちそうもいただこう

ハッハッハッハッ

The wolf followed Little Red Riding Hood down the path and soon began to talk to her again...

おおかみは赤ずきんの後をついていき また赤ずきんに話しかけました

Look over there Little Red Riding Hood.

見てごらん あかずきんや

Do you see those lovely yellow flowers?

この黄色いお花 きれいだよ

Oh, you're right! They're beautiful!

ほんと きれいね

Distracted by the pretty flowers,

きれいな花に気を取られ

Little Red Riding Hood forgot all about her Mother's warning

赤ずきんは おかあさんのいいつけを すっかり忘れてしまいました

and stepped off the path to take a closer look.

近くで見ようと 道から外れてしまいました

Ah ha! Let that silly Little Red Riding Hood enjoy her flowers.

アハッハ ばかな赤ずきんには花で遊ばせておこう

Meanwhile, I'm going to Grandma's house!

その間に 俺はおばあちゃんの家に行こう

When the wolf knocked on Grandma's door

おおかみが おばあちゃんの家のドアをノックすると

a faint voice answered him from inside the house...

家の中から 小さな声で返事が聞こえました

Who is it?

誰だい

It's me Grandma, Little Red Riding Hood. Please let me in.

おばあちゃん 私よ 赤ずきんよ 中に入れて

I've come to bring you some freshly baked bread and delicious wine.

焼きたてのパンとおいしいワインを 持ってきたのよ

Oh, that is so nice! Come in, the door is open. Come on in.

それはうれしいわ 入ってちょうだい ドアは開いてるわ

Throwing open the door, the wolf sprang into the house. Grandma screamed...

おおかみは ドアを開けると 中に飛び込みました おばあちゃんは悲鳴を上げます

You're not my granddaughter, you're a wolf!

お前はあかずきんじゃないね おおかみじゃないか

With an evil laugh, the Wolf pounced on her and swallowed her whole.

おおかみは 邪悪な笑いを浮かべておばあちゃんに襲いかかり 飲み込んでしまいました

Disguising himself in Grandma's nightgown,cap, and glasses, the wolf lay down in her bed and pulled up the covers.

おおかみは おばあちゃんのパジャマ、帽子、メガネで変装し ベッドに横になりふとんをかぶりました

He he.Soon I'll be snacking on Little Red Riding Hood, too!

ハッハッハ もうすぐ赤ずきんも 食べてしまえるぞ

I can almost taste her already!

赤ずきんはどんな味がするんだろうな

Finally Little Red Riding Hood arrived at her grandmother's house.

とうとう赤ずきんが おばあちゃんの家に着きました

Hello Grandma. It is me, Little Red Riding Hood. Can I come in?

おばあちゃん こんにちは 私よ あかずきんよ 入っていいかな

The door is open. Come on in.

ドアは開いてるわ 入っておいで

When Little Red Riding Hood entered the house she instantly felt that something had changed in her grandmother's appearance.

赤ずきんは 家に入ると おばあちゃんの何かが変わっていることに気がつきました

Oh, Grandma! Why are your ears so big?

あれ おばあちゃん どうしてそんなに大きい耳なの

To hear your sweet voice better, my dear.

おまえのかわいい声をよく聞くために大きいんだよ

What happened to your eyes? Why did are they so wide and scary?

目はどうしたの どうしてそんなに大きくて怖い目なの

To see your lovely face better, sweet heart.

おまえのかわいい顔をよく見るためだよ

Why are your teeth so long and sharp?

どうしてそんなに長くて鋭い歯なの

To chew better, darling... when I eat you!!!

お前を食べるときに しっかりかむためだよ

Before Little Red Riding Hood could move, the wolf left out of bed,

赤ずきんが逃げる暇もなく おおかみはベッドから起き上がり

pounced on her and swallowed her whole just like her grandmother.

赤ずきんに襲いかかり おばあちゃんと同じように飲み込みました

Hmmm. That was yummy

うーん おいしいなあ

Ah, now all I need after such a satisfying snack is a good nap...

おいしい食事を食べたら 眠くなってきたなあ

The wolf ate so much. His stomach was full

おおかみはたくさん食べたので おなかがいっぱいになり

...and the wolf drifted off to sleep, snoring loudly.

大きないびきをかきながら 眠ってしまいました

At that very moment, a hunter was passing by Grandma's house.

ちょうどのそのとき ハンターがおばあちゃんの家のそばを通りました

He was surprised to hear the loud snoring, and began to suspect that something odd was going on...

彼は おおきないびきに驚き 何か変だぞと思いました

That doesn't sound like Grandma at all! It sounds like some savage beast.

おばあちゃんの声ではないぞ 動物の声みたいだ

The hunter peeked in through the window and saw the wolf.

窓からのぞいてみると おおかみが見えました

Ah ha! That monster must have eaten poor Grandma!

おっと こいつがおばあちゃんを食べたにちがいない

Sneaking quietly into the house, the hunter aimed his rifle at the sleeping wolf.

ハンターは 静かに家の中に入り 眠っているおおかみをライフルで狙いました

But just as he was about to shoot, the wolf's bulging belly began to wiggle.

ハンターが撃とうとしたとき おおかみの膨らんだおなかが動き始めました

Oh my! It looks like Grandma is still trapped in the wolf's stomach!

そうか おばあちゃんがおおかみのおなかのなかでもがいているんだ

The hunter brought a pair of scissors and cut open the wolf's stomach.

ハンターはハサミでおおかみのおなかを切り裂きました

Grandmother and Little Red Riding Hood jumped out alive and unharmed.

おばあちゃんと赤ずきんは けがもなく 元気にでてきました

Thank you for saving us, Mr. Hunter!

ハンターさん 助けてくれてありがとう

I am so glad that you are both alright...

2人とも元気でよかったよ

but what should we do about that wolf?

でもおおかみはどうしてやろうか

Let's teach the wicked wolf a lesson, and stuff his stomach with rocks!

悪いおおかみに思い知らせてやるために おなかに石をつめてみましょう

Little Red Riding Hood brought some heavy rocks that she gathered outside and loaded them into the wolf's stomach.

赤ずきんは外から重い石を取ってきて おおかみのおなかに詰めました

When she was done, Grandma stitched the the wolf back up.

石を詰め終わると おばあちゃんが おおかみのおなかを縫いました

Ugh.... my stomach! What happened to my stomach?

おお おなかが 俺のおなかはどうしたんだ

Why does it hurt so much!

どうしてこんなに痛いんだ

The rocks in the wolf's stomach were so heavy he couldn't get up off the bed.

おおかみのおなかの石はとても重かったので ベッドから起き上がれませんでした

He tossed and turned until he toppled off the edge and fell to the floor, dead.

寝返りを打ち ベッドの隅から床に落ちて 死んでしまいました

Everyone cheered.

みんな喜びました

Hurray!

That day, Little Red Riding Hood learned an important lesson too.

こうして 赤ずきんは大事なことを学びました

She promised that from that moment on, she would always listen to her mother and never talk to strangers.

この日から あかずきんは おかあさんの言いつけを守り 知らない人と話をしないようになりました
