  • in this video, we're going to look at high frequency verbs commonly included in academic task.

  • If you understand how to use thes verbs with complete lexical and grammatical accuracy, you will have a basic foundation upon which to describe all trends in your source.

  • And with further study, you can build upon this foundation to form or complex sentences.

  • Because these words describe trends, they are helpful for all forms of questions in some cases, including map questions that depict changes in landscape over a period of time.

  • You may find it helpful to watch this video while looking at the task.

  • One lexical pattern.

  • Quick reference sheets included in the Back of My E book, which describe additional uses and variations.

  • So here are the high frequency academic task one birds and corresponding arrows to give you an idea of the trend type they describe.

  • So the verbs are jump, which is a fast movement upward climb, rise, grow increase and the freeze over go up, and all of these describe a movement upward maintain, which means to carry on in a direction.

  • This could be up, down or unchanging plateau, which means to neither increase nor decrease dip, which describes a movement downwards.

  • But this is often used to describe a temporary downward movement, the phrase over go down, decreased decline fall and these air words that describe a downward movement and finally drop, which is a fast movement downward.

  • It's quite likely that your source will reference a point of time or a period of time in the past, so you should know the past tense forms of these verbs, and I'll indicate participle forms here as well.

  • So jumped climbed rose or the past participle formed.

  • Risen grew, increased, went up or the past participle form gone up.

  • Maintained plateau owed dipped went down or gone down.

  • Decreased, declined, fell or the past participle form fallen and dropped.

  • It is important to remember that adverbs can be used to alter the meaning of some of these verbs.

  • For example, climbed rose grew increased and went up can be combined with rapidly to indicate a fast movement upward.

  • Alternatively, they could be combined with gradually to indicate a slow or paced movement upward significantly and modestly could be used to indicate large and small movement upward, respectively.

  • These same adverbs could be applied in the same ways to the verbs describing downward movement.

  • So now you have a basis with which to create coherent sentences that describe trends in data.

  • For example, referring to points in the data using now is like figure value and amount allows you to say things like this figure climbed rapidly to 7000 units.

  • By 2000 and nine.

  • This value went up gradually.

  • Over the next 10 years, this amount fell to 22 million and maintained this value for the following eight months.

  • Potato Orders plan towed at £70 until August, when they dipped slightly to £68.

  • Forested areas of Perth decreased significantly over the period in question.

  • Cigarette consumption dropped to 19% in 2012.
