Good morning guys, the day has come today. I'm cycling the Shimanami Kaido with Chris.
I am just about to rent a bicycle. So you guys could see how you can do that here. It's quite cheap
Apparently it's only 10 or 15 dollars to rent a bike
To go all across the Shimanami Kaido. You can return the bicycle along several points along the route
So if you decide you want to give up halfway
There's probably a spot you can return the bicycle there
So you don't need to cycle it all the way across you don't need to come back to the start to return it
So that's really convenient
Okay, so I finished the registration the next step is to choose my bike
They have several different bikes to choose from so hmm. Oh I could get a 'mama chari'
I'd have a basket to store my camera in that's actually quite tempting
I think I'll go with this one here, it's got like a decently squishy seat
Yeah, maybe a little bit
Yeah, I think it's good - perfect perfect
Yeah. They also have helmets you can borrow and they're cool helmets. They're not
orange helmets. This looks like Ryotaro's helmet, actually
I am so excited that the weather is this nice you guys. It's kind of chilly. It's about 19°C
I think that's the high for today. It's a little cloudy which is perfect. And I think we're gonna have a really nice ride
We just made the boot. It costs 110 yen to catch the ferry
It'll drop you off at the starting point of the cicle
It's a really nice ride, it's really beautiful
We're here! It's a really short ferry ride. It's like five minutes
I'm so excited!
You follow the blue line and that's the route
The whole route is a sign posted by a blue line that runs along the road
I've already gone the wrong way because we forgot to follow the blue line. Don't make the same mistake
we did! Always follow the blue line!
There it is
What a rebel
We're just making our first pit stop for some water I think we've gone about 3 kilometers. So far? Yeah, I think that's it
Felt like 10 we kind of went uphill a little bit. It wasn't too bad, but look at our view
We're gonna be going over our first epic bridge soon. It's really nice it actually
Looks like the suspension bridge that we saw the other day in Kobe. Not as long I guess, but really similar
So we're still in Hiroshima Prefecture the views here are so beautiful you guys the water is this tropical
blue color. All the bridges make for some really nice photos and just the whole area is so pretty
I don't know what I had in mind, when I pictured Hiroshima
This is my first time here, but I really didn't imagine it looking like this. We're taking our first proper rest
I think we biked about 13 kilometers or so
So far, it doesn't sound like long, but I swear half of the route was uphill
I picked up some Pocari sweat. It's a sports drink
With a really bad name if you're unfamiliar with this, it's the most popular sports drink in Japan
So everybody knows it
but this is to replace my electrolytes because I sweat a lot! And I got an onigiri and I'm just gonna sit here and
Eat and take a break to rest, before we take on the rest of the trip.
All right, break time is over, off to...
our next destination
Time for coffee break Chris O'Connell is join the trip now and we're gonna get some sick drone shots on this bridge
behind us, but first coffee
Break time's over, time to cycle again. The sun is really, really bright probably should have worn sunscreen... gonna regret this tomorrow
So this is the last bridge of the day
It's really big. It's like two or three suspension bridges in one and it looks beautiful
It's a very picturesque bridge 4.105 meters long - Wow
4 kilometers (Sharla&Chris)
Technically, if you would call it one bridge, it's one of the longest suspension bridges in the world - Where we're know? We're somewhere around here
I am the king of specific locations
Started raining you guys, but just a little bit. It's not bad
We're about to go over another bridge that looks very similar to the other bridges
We've gone over, the views are stunning as they have been for the entire trip
We're nearly there
Cruising downhill on a bike is probably my absolute favorite thing to do and it almost makes all the hills
We've had to climb worth it. It's so much fun
We are here at the moment with a beautiful view of Hakata Oshima bridge
And we have one bridge to go and then we're done. We've made it you guys we've cycled
53 kilometers so far and the sun
Should be setting just as we're finishing our ride if we can keep up our pace. So that's exciting
We did well. My legs hurt, they hurt a lot, but I think we can complete it
No problem. The most beautiful sunset in the Shimanami is at number 9
...here. Oh! If we can make it here
for the sunset
That's where we are now
These hills are absolute killer... but check out the amazing sunset that I have behind me
We actually just missed the best part of it by about 10-15 minutes, if we would gotten here a little earlier
This would have just been the best view known to mankind
But it's still quite good. So I can't complain that hill killed me though, but this is our last bridge
We've almost made it! A little longer to go
We've done it you guys we have just finished the last bridge of the Shimanami Kaido
I can't explain the view in words. I honestly can't it's the
It's the best thing I've ever seen in my entire life
And now when people ask me the one thing they should do when they come to Japan. I finally have an answer!
I didn't have one until now. I always couldn't decide there's so many cool things to do here
This is it! Cycle the Shimanami Kaido. If you don't want to cycle, if you can't cycle, rent a car
Travel across it by walking... by wheelchair. However, you can. Please do it... the views you guys!
I definitely wasn't able to capture them how they look in person with my camera
But...Just take my word for it
It's stunning. It's absolutely stunning. I feel so lucky that I was able to join this trip
So thank you Chris for allowing me to join you on this cycle
This has been the best experience I've ever had in Japan. It's great you guys it's really really great
Lost Chris.... not sure where Chris is. Hopefully I didn't take the wrong road. Oh crap!
