  • a beautiful man-made Beach that's used on the weekends for dates to see the beautiful view at night and

  • and today to cut open this

  • the square watermelon of Zentsūji

  • It's really a cube and it's one of the most well known in Japan's bizarre fruit kingdom

  • in a previous episode i went to the farm where they're grown in Zentsūji Kagawa

  • and learned everything there is to know about this unique watermelon that has became a symbol of japan

  • They harvest only about 200 annually and the design was patented by the inventor

  • Let's see what this thing tastes like

  • So here we go we're gonna start to cut this open

  • But it's sort of a waste isn't it? Because these square watermelons aren't meant to be eaten

  • at least that's what people keep telling me

  • its supposed to be art

  • Art, what should be round is now a cube

  • Adorned with ribbon. There are so few of them that when they're displayed. They turn a lot of heads

  • The farmer is now a produce artist fathering a masterpiece. Now, let's just cut it open and eat it

  • There is a reason why square watermelons are harder to cut and the reason lies inside this really fun piece of fruit

  • It's not a typical watermelon color very little pink and red because square watermelons are actually unripe

  • They're harvested early. So they have a longer shelf life three to six months longer

  • it actually looks a little gross

  • So you can see it's a mix of pink and yellow.

  • its not what a watermelon would look like again for reference. I have this here. This is a normal Japanese watermelon

  • That's right

  • Most watermelons are pretty normal in Japan

  • The fact that they've taken the usual and turned it into something quite unique is what Japan is really good at!

  • it's just an unripe, orange and very little pink watermelon and it just happens to be square

  • and it just happens to be square

  • There's no smell at all to this

  • I'm pretty proud of being one of only two hundred people to have one this year

  • But it just seemed like a waste not to eat it

  • So I'll cut it up because it's more fun to share it with others on the beach

  • For all that money

  • This is what you get

  • And i'm started to think that this normal

  • Regular watermelon is gonna taste a lot better

  • now lets taste this thing!

  • Not many have eaten the famous square watermelon, so it's sure to be a hit right? We know it looks cool

  • Well, that's not the best way to start off

  • She wouldn't even eat the yellow Center picking off the pink that was sort of ripe

  • These two girls are really impressed with the shape

  • A little goes a long way with the square watermelon

  • it's so bad it has to be shared with your wife

  • That expression says it all

  • Those smiles means something good right perhaps there's something we missed

  • Nope, it's bad

  • How about these guys?

  • Wait for it... wait for it...

  • It has about there it is ohh, oh, ohh-oh-oh. Unripe fruits aren't often tasty. Oh

  • Let's have another bite because I can just paste that again, huh

  • Don't think chocolate sauce ranch dressing or even cheese whiz could save this thing

  • At first it's a little bit sweet like 20% of what a watermelon should taste like and 80% like a glass of water

  • like a cucumber and then in the last

  • three seconds it gets real bitter

  • Yeah, oh yeah watermelon,

  • No, no, no square watermelon

  • So that's why you don't see square watermelons being eaten because they taste like

  • Square watermelon!

  • So if you see one leave your wallet in your pocket or purse and resist the urge to have it for dessert

  • Square watermelons are best eaten with the eyes
