I’ve just got back from seeing Lady Braybrooke.

She organises many charitable initiatives, from blankets for the needy to the collection of old toys and such items

奥さまはたくさんの慈善団体を率先され、まとめています。 困ってる人たちへのブランケットとか、

for new mothers with children.

子供がいる新米母親たちへのお下がりのおもちゃとかね。

Today, she’s asked me to make a hearty soup for the poor of the parish. It needs to be tasty and filling.

本日は、地区の困っている人たちのために 美味しく、腹持ちのよいスープを作るように頼まれました。

For this recipe you will need:

おいしくて具だくさんでこしらえます 今回使う材料は――

Bacon

薄切りベーコン ３枚、

Butter

バター 大さじ１杯、

Onion

玉ねぎ １個、

Carrots

人参 ２本、

Celery

セロリの茎 ２本、

Yellow split peas

黄色えんどう豆 300g、

Some mint

ミント　２枝、

Stock

スープ出汁(ストック)　2 L、

And to season, salt

味付けに塩と、

and pepper.

黒胡椒です。

My yellow split peas have been soaking overnight,

黄色えんどうお豆を一晩、 水に漬けて置きました。

and Mary-Anne has already chopped my onions and carrots.

玉ネギと人参はMary-Anneが切ってくれました。

So all that’s left to do is to chop my celery and my bacon.

私がする事はセロリとベーコンを切るだけです。

Any uneaten food – if there is any – is given to feed the poor as alms at the gate.

手つかずの食材は、もし、あればね。 貧しい者への最善の施しとして分け与えられます。

But when it is particularly cold like now then we ought to do a little more,

特にに寒くなってくると、 私たちはちょっと多く作らなくてはなりません。

and this soup will help with that.

First, I’m going to fry the bacon in butter.

最初に、バターでベーコンを炒めます。

And then I’m going to add my vegetables.

And finally the stock.

This recipe is from Alexis Soyer – he’s one of my heroes.

This soup needs just under an hour simmering to allow the peas to split.

I like to season my soups very well.

And I’m going to add a little mint to lift the flavour.

We must always remember there are no guarantees in life.
