Transporting the 440 ton turbine by water and overland clear across Germany is a masterly achievement of logistics. The destination is Irsching, over 500 kilometers away. The turbine will demonstrate its performance in a year-long test run at this EON power plant on the Danube. >>For now we are testing the gas turbine in open cycle, meaning, we are testing the gas turbine on its own. When the test run is completed, we have to meet so called minimum criteria. And once that has been achieved, then we will convert it to combined cycle operation around the end of next year. >>The turbine reaches its destination and is lifted into its final position. Only now will the power plant begin to take shape around the five meter high turbine. The assemblers hook the generator up to the The SGT5-8000H. The first performance test is ready to proceed. 340 megawatts in stand-alone operation and up to 530 megawatts in combined cycle operation with an efficiency rating of over 60 percent. Siemens is venturing into a whole new dimension of innovative power generation. >>More efficient power plants help in climate protection, regardless of whether they run on coal or gas. And if we develop a technology for it here in Germany and if we use it here, then these plants themselves will be the very demonstration facilities, that we can later export around the world. So it's a good thing for climate protection and, of course, we are happy to have a share in it. >>A 750 person project team, seven years of planning and development, the performance of 13 jumbo jet engines, everything is ready. The SGT5-8000H is waiting for its first firing.
