There once was a prince, and he wanted a princess, but then she must be a real princess.

むかし、あるところに王子さまがいました。王子さまはお姫さまと結婚したかったのですが、本物のお姫さまでなくてはなりません。

He traveled right around the world to find one, but there was always something wrong.

王子さまは世界中を探し回りましたが、いつも上手くいきませんでした。

There were plenty of princesses, but whether they were real princesses, he had great difficulty in discovering; there was always something that was not quite right about them.

お姫さまはたくさんいたのですが、本物のお姫さまかどうかを見極めるには難しく、どこか必ず引っかかるところがあったのです。

So at last, he had come home again, and he was very sad because he wanted a real princess so badly.

こうしてようやくお城に帰ってきた王子さまでしたが、本物のお姫さまを見つけたくてしょうがなかったためとてもガッカリしていました。

One evening there was a terrible storm; it thundered and lightened, and the rain poured down in torrents; indeed it was a fearful night.

ある夜、激しい嵐がやってきました。雷が鳴って稲妻が光り土砂降りの雨は止むことがなく、本当に恐ろしい夜でした。

In the middle of the storm, somebody knocked at the town gate, and the old king himself went to open it.

そんな嵐の最中に、お城の門を叩く者がいたので、王さま自ら門を開けに出ていきました。

It was a princess who stood outside, but she was in a terrible state from the rain and the storm.

そこに立っていたのはお姫さまでした。しかし、雨と嵐にさらされてひどい姿です。

The water streamed out of her hair and her clothes; it ran in at the top of her shoes and out at the heel, but she said that she was a real princess.

雨水が髪から服を濡らして滴り落ちて、靴を通って足の先までずぶぬれでしたが、自分は本物のお姫さまだと言うのです。

"Well we shall soon see if that is true," thought the old queen, but she said nothing.

女王さまは「本当かどうか、すぐに分かるわ」と思いましたが、口に出しては言いませんでした。

She went into the bedroom, took all the bed clothes off and laid a pea on the bedstead. then she took twenty mattresses and piled them on top of the pea, and then twenty feather beds on top of the mattresses.

女王さまは寝室に行って、ベッドのリネンなどを全て取り除き、ベッドの土台の上に1粒のエンドウ豆を置きました。それからそのエンドウ豆の上にマットレスを20個、さらにその上に羽毛布を20枚重ねました。

This was where the princess was to sleep that night.

そして、この上にその晩お姫さまが寝るようにしたのです。

In the morning, they asked her how she slept.

翌朝、お姫さまは夜はよく寝れたかどうか聞かれたのですが、

"Oh, terribly bad!", said the princess. "I have hardly closed my eyes the whole night! Heaven knows what was in the bed."

「いいえ、本当に大変でした！」と答えました。そして、「一晩中目を閉じることもやっとでしたから！ベッドの中に何か入っていたみたいなんです」

"I seemed to be lying upon some hard thing, and my whole body is black and blue this morning. It is terrible!"

「何か固いものの上に寝ていたようで、今朝起きたら体中アザだらけでしたから、大変です！」と続けます。

They saw at once that she must be a real princess when she had felt the pea through twenty mattresses and twenty feather beds.

マットレス20個に羽毛布20枚を通してエンドウ豆の存在を感じたということは、この人こそ本物のお姫さまに違いないと誰もが確信しました。

Nobody but a real princess could have such a delicate skin.

本物のお姫さまだけが、これほどまでに繊細な肌を持つからです。

So the prince took her to be his wife, for now he was sure that he had found a real princess, and the pea was put into the museum, where it may still be seen if no one has stolen it.

そこで王子さまはこの女性を自分のお嫁さんとして迎え、ようやく本物のお姫さまを見つけることができたのです。そして、エンドウ豆は博物館に展示されていますから、誰にも盗まれていなければ今でも見ることができるのです。

Now this is a true story.

これは、本当にあったお話です。
