I'm in Hell, and I did it all without any tech from 2019.

Hell にやってきました、しかも 2019 年現在のテクノロジーを全く頼らずに。

Why the hell did I end up in Hell?

何でまた Hell なんて名前の場所にやってきたんでしょうか？

Oh well, it's actually quite simple.

まあ、その、実は大したことじゃないんです。

As the clock nears 2020, I've been thinking a lot about how much the smartphone has changed the world and us, in the last decade.

2020 年を目前に控えて、いかにスマートフォンがここ 10 年間で世界を変えたかについて、たくさん考えていたんです。

So, I challenged myself to live with just 2010 tech for 24 hours.

というわけで、私は 24 時間だけ 2010 年当時のテクノロジーで生活をしてみようと思い立ったんです。

I asked my producer, Kenny for some suggestions on where to go.

I think you should go to Hell, Michigan.

I grew up near there.

And so, we got to packing.

I gathered a bunch of gadgets I used in 2010.

私が 2010 年当時使っていたガジェットを引っ張り出してきたんです。

Yeah, I'm bringing this.

My BlackBerry Bold 9700, a Zune HD, a Flip Mino HD, a Cannon point and shoot, and a Garmin Nuvi for GPS.

All of them surprisingly worked after I charged up the batteries.

Okay, I am putting this iPhone in this drawer at my house, and I'm leaving it here for the next 24 hours or so.

Challenge one, get to Hell.

チャレンジその 1、Hell に向かえ

And took off for the airport to begin a series of four challenges Kenny had designed for me.

ということで、ケニーが考え出した 4 つのチャレンジに立ち向かうべく、空港に向かって出発しました。

Hell, it turns out, is a small township about 60 miles out of Detroit.

調べたところ、Hell という場所はデトロイト郊外 60 マイルにある、小さな街のようです。

That meant, a flight, a drive to stay at a hotel nearby, and then another drive to Hell.

ということは、飛行機を降りた後も車で近くのホテルに泊まってから改めて Hell に向かうという感じになります。

The flight part was easier than I thought.

飛行機による移動は思っていたよりも簡単でした。

Look at all these people on their phones.

見てホラ、みんな携帯いじってる。

No ticket on my phone, nothing to really do while killing time in line.

私の携帯にはチケットもダウンロードしていないし、列に並んでいる間に時間をつぶす手段があまりないです。

It's so good.

I was so good at this.

I really enjoyed using my Zune HD.

私の Zune HD は大活躍でした。

Now we must get off the flight.

Turns out that Garmin didn't have the latest software update, which needs to be downloaded on a Windows computer to reach the damn satellites.

実は Garmin はソフトウェアのアップデートが必要で、それをウィンドウズのパソコンにダウンロードして衛生にアクセスしなくちゃいけないというアホな話でした。

So I went back to 2000.

そんなわけで、2000 年にまでさかのぼりました。

But it looks like we've gotta take 94 out of Detroit.

The maps got me close, but not close enough.

I had to call the hotel for directions.

The Holiday Inn Express in Howell, which is close to Hell.

I asked the concierge to print me out directions from Howell to Hell.

The WiFi on my BlackBerry wasn't gonna help, since Instagram doesn't have a BlackBerry app.

インスタグラムは BlackBerry のアプリが無いので、私の BlackBerry は使い物になりません。

So I hooked up the camera to my new friend, Vaughn's Windows PC.

というわけで、親切なボーンさんのウィンドウズコンピュータにカメラをつなげさせてもらいました。

I'm gonna import them all to her computer.

I have no idea where these are going.

Then, I got to Googling.

デベロッパー向けのグーグル・クロームの裏技で、ウェブサイトのブラウザを携帯のブラウザのように強制変更させることができるんです。

Review lunch on Yelp.

Yelp でランチをレビューする。

It's slim pickings on restaurants in Hell, so I opted for the Hell Hole Bar, and I ordered a local favorite.

Hell にはレストランの選択肢があまりないので、Hell Hole Bar を選んで地元の人気料理を頼むことにしました。

So I'm gonna be eating the Patsy.

パッツィを食べたいと思います。

This is called a pasty.

パスティ、だそうです。

This is a Michigan delicacy.

ミシガンの名物料理です。

I'm eating a pasty and it looks like a cross between chicken pot pie and an empanada.

私が食べてるこのパスティですけど、チキンポット・パイとエンパナーダの合いの子みたいな感じですね。

It's really good.

スゴイ美味しい。

Now posting my review was well, not really possible.

さて、レビューを投稿するのは、まあかなり無理がありました。

There was very little 3G service in the restaurant.

レストランの中の 3G 回線はかなり弱くて。

Like, the browser will load but I can't really search on the BlackBerry either.

っていうか、ブラウザがロードしてるんだけど、BlackBerry だと検索ができなくて。

The bigger issue was that the BlackBerry 5 browser was so slow to load images and the site, and yes the iPhone 4 was out in 2010, but I still had a BlackBerry.

さらに困ったのは、BlackBerry5 のブラウザは画像やサイトのダウンロードがとっても遅いことで、確かに2010年に iPhone 4 は出ていたけど、私はまだ BlackBerry を使っていたんです。

It was only hours later, while sitting on the plane back home, that I was able to log in and post it.

ようやく何時間も経った後、帰りの飛行機の中でログインして投稿ができました。

何となく、ですけど。

Don't get me wrong, most of my day in Hell was, hell.

ちゃんと言っておきますけど、私が Hell で過ごした 1 日は、地獄のようでした。

But in many ways, it ended up being like heaven.

でも、天国にいるような場面もたくさんありました。

I don't even want to take a photo of this.

これなんか、写真撮ってる場合じゃないでしょ。

It's that good.

それぐらい美味しい。

It was nice remembering how we used to do things, like navigate the world with our brains or ask people to take photos of us.

自分の頭を使って目的地にまで到達したり、他人に写真を撮ってもらうといったような、昔はみんながやっていたことを思い出すのは良い経験でした。

Best of all, it was nice to remember when social media feeds were just on computers and unable to distract us everywhere we are.

一番よかったのは、ソーシャルメディアの投稿は昔はコンピュータ上でしかできなかったので、今のようにどこにいても目に入ってくることがなかった事実を考えさせられたことでした。

I'm back from Hell, and here it is.

Hell から帰ってきました。そしてジャジャーン。

I've made it.
