Um, let's talk about the new movie first.

じゃあ、新作映画の話からしましょうか。

Um, "Last Christmas."

「ラストクリスマス」ですね。

It feels like it is a coming together of everybody's favorites from everything into one movie.

なんか、みんなの大好きな要素が1つの映画に集約されたって感じの作品ですよね。

It's... Like, that's what it feels like.

なんか…そんな感じですよね。

Cause we got like, "Crazy Rich Asians," one of the biggest movies in the world that everyone fell in love with.

だってほら、まず「クレイジー・リッチ!」が世界で大ヒットしたじゃないですか。

- And then you've got "Game of Thrones," which everyone was in love with. - Yes.

それから、みんな大好きな「ゲーム・オブ・スローンズ」があるわけですよね。　そうですね。

And everyone is just like, "Yeah, just put all our best things together, and we're gonna watch that for Christmas."

そしたらみんな、「それじゃあ、良い所を全部一緒にひっくるめて、クリスマス映画に仕立てよう」ってなった、みたいな。

Is that what it felt like on set?

現場でもそんな雰囲気でした？

Definitely.

そうですね。

We were like the two dragon ladies, right?

2人の魅惑のドラゴン・レディ、みたいな感じでしたから。

We're like, "Who's gonna be the dragon lady here?"

何かこう、「誰がドラゴン・レディかな？」みたいな。

And then we had so much fun.

ホントに楽しかったですよ。

-Right. -Emilia is just wonderful to work with, and I really, really enjoyed it.

そうですか。　エミリアは共演者としては最高で、本当に楽しかったです。

It was a little daunting when Paul Feig - and I love him for this.

ポール・フェイグがちょっと私に言ったことがあって、困っちゃったんですけど、まあ今となれば良い思い出で。

Uh, he called me, and he says, "I want you to play Santa."

その、私を呼んで、「サンタ役をやってほしいんだけど」って言うんです。

And I went, "Santa?"

私的には、「サンタですか？」みたいな。

I know I champion for gender equality and all, but really?

確かに私は男女平等を訴えていますけど、マジで？って感じですよ。

"I'm gonna put on the 'Ho-ho-ho' red outfit and that? I'm not quite so sure."

「例の赤と白のサンタコスチュームを着たりするんですか？ちょっと考えさせてください」って言ったら

And he goes, "No, no, no no."

「いや、そうじゃないんだ」って言って。

"Emma Thompson wrote an incredible script."

「エマ・トンプソンがすごい台本を書いたんだ」って言うんです。

Right.

なるほど。

Emma Thompson.

エマ・トンプソン、ですよ。

Right?

ね？

I mean, Paul Feig, Emma Thompson, Emilia Clarke, Henry Golding.

だって、ポール・フェイグにエマ・トンプソン、エミリア・クラーク、ヘンリー・ゴールディングまでいるんですよ。

I was like, "Okay, I'm there."

私はもう「分かりました、是非」って。

"But please explain what is this Santa?"

「でもサンタについて説明してくれませんか？」とは言ったんです。

And I've never ventured into a comedy.

それまでコメディにはトライしたことがなくて。

I mean, I... "Crazy Rich Asians" is a romantic comedy, but I played the most serious role there, right?

まあ、確かに「クレイジー・リッチ！」はロマンチックコメディだったけど、その中でも一番真面目な役だったじゃないですか？

- Yeah, very serious role. Right. - Right.

確かに、かなり真面目な役でしたね。　そうなんですよ。

But in this one, I actually get to be funny, and I...

でも今回の役は、実際に面白い人の役なんですよ、それで…

Is...is that a big departure for you because, like, I grew up watching your movies, and I only knew you as an action star.

それって、新境地に達した感じですか？だって僕はあなたの映画を観て育ったんですけど、アクションスターとしてのイメージしかなかったんですよ。

You know, that is the only way I...

だから、そのイメージしかなくて…

Like, you were... it was, like, you, Jet Li, Jackie Chan.

何かその…ほら、あなたの他にもジェット・リーにジャッキーチェンでしょ。

- That was my world when I was watching you growing up. - Oh.

僕が小さい頃はそういった面々が大活躍していたわけですよ。

And then, funny enough, then I moved to America.

それから面白いのは、僕がアメリカに移住してきて。

Then I was like, "Michelle Yeoh."

「ミッシェル・ヨー」の話をすると

And they're like, "Oh, yes, we know her from, like, you know... Like, it's more, like, dramatic."

周りの人は、「あー、知ってる、ドラマとかに出てる人だよね」みたいな。

I was like, "No, the action star."

でも僕は、「違うよ、アクションスターの」って言うと

They're like, "Action star?"

「アクションスターなの？」って反応だったんですよ。

But a lot of people don't know this about you.

でも、この側面を知らない人はたくさんいるんですよ。

You were a huge action star, are a huge action star, like, in Asia.

アクションスターとして有名ですから、その、アジアなんかでは。

- Still proud to be a great action star. - Right.

今でもアクションスターとしての誇りは持っていますよ。　でしょうね。

And then you had to cross over to America and start again from scratch.

それで、アメリカに進出して一からやり直さなければいけなかったわけじゃないですか。

But then when I crossed over one of the first movies I did was "Tomorrow Never Dies."

まあ、初めて渡米してきたときの映画は「トゥモロー・ネバー・ダイ」だったんです。

- Of course, yes. - Right? Yes.

その通り。　ね？ハイハイ。

And so we do appreciate that you've taken that effort to come and watch us, so when you do come, I want to give you a surprise.

ですから、わざわざ映画館まで足を運んでいただいて本当に感謝しているんですよ、だから来てくださった方にはサプライズを用意したかったんです。

And I hope that "Last Christmas" will be a fun surprise for you.

Let me...let me ask you this then: When...when you are...when you move into comedy, I mean, a lot of actors have said it's actually one of the most difficult disciplines because being straight is being straight, and then, you know, like, fighting is fighting, but with comedy it's timing, and it's rhythm.

ちょっとお伺いしたいんですけど、コメディを演じる時って、役者さんの多くがホントに難しいって言うじゃないですか。だって真面目な役の時はそのまま真面目にやって、戦いのシーンでは戦ってって感じで良いんですけど、コメディはタイミングとリズムが大事ですよね。

Yes.

その通り。

Was that difficult for you?

その点は難しかったですか？

I was terrified.

すっごく緊張しましたよ。

I would have rather beat down eight guys, okay?

だったら、8人の敵をブッ倒した方がまだましですよ、分かります？

I would. Just bring them on.

本当に。かかって来いよみたいな。

When Paul Feig, bless him, he says, "You can do it."

ポール・フェイグ、ホント彼はすごいけど、「あなたなら出来るよ」って言ってくれた時に

I said, "You realize I've never done comedy before."

私は「今までコメディなんてやったことないんですよ」って答えたら

And he was just obsessed and relentless.

まあ、彼はもうガッツリはまっててテコでも動かないって感じで。

He said "You have to try and do this."

「是非トライしてみて欲しいんだ」って言って。

And Emma Thompson actually wrote this character inspired by someone who is very dear to her.

それにエマ・トンプソンが書いたこのキャラクターっていうのは、彼女自身にとって特別な人に影響を受けているんです。

Which is her daughter-in-law, Bao, who is an immigrant from China.

義理の娘のバオちゃんなんですけど、彼女は中国からの移民なんですね。

Oh, wow.

うわー、そうなんですか。

Who's moved to England.

イギリスに渡って。

And I think her story is also very much about the immigrants who have come.

彼女のストーリーっていうのは、いわば移民のストーリーなんですよ。

And with, uh, Santa, or Bao, they came, and they were determined to fit in.

ですから、その、サンタだったり、バオちゃんにとって、新しい地に馴染もうと必死なんです。

So my character, Santa, when she worked at the pet shop, she wanted to blend in but not because she didn't want to be - she wasn't proud of who she was or her ethnicity.

ですから、私が演じるサンタはペットショップで働いている時は馴染もうとしてたんですけど、彼女自身は自分であることや自分の人種に誇りを持っていないんです。

If you watch the way she dresses, it's got the Chinese element in there, but then, like, the flamboyant Western panache as well.

着ているものを見れば、中国のカラーは強いですし、でも一方で華やかな西洋気取りの雰囲気も併せ持っているんです。

- Right. Right, right. - Right.

ハイハイハイ。　でしょう。

And she would call herself Kitty at the pet store or Muffin at the bakery.

しかもペットショップにいる時は、自分のことをキティって呼んで、パン屋さんではマフィンって呼んでいるんです。

So, as far as Emilia Clarke was concerned, your name is Santa.

ですから、エミリア・クラークに関して言えば、名前はサンタ、なんですよ。

And then I said "No, my name is... "

それで、私は「違うの、私の名前は…」って言って。

She was like...

彼女も何かその…

I love that.

最高ですね。

I think I'm going to call myself Hosty from now on.

僕はこれからホスティって名乗ろうかな。
