I'm Joe Mignano, web designer and staff writer at japan-guide dot com, and here is a two-day trip we've crafted to get the most out of Sapporo in winter.

Here's the plan.

旅行日程は次の通り。

We fly into Hokkaido and take a short train ride into the city.

飛行機で北海道へ。そこから少し電車に乗って札幌に入ります。

From Sapporo station we'll take the subway one stop straight to Odori Park where we'll spend our first day taking in the Sapporo Snow Festival.

札幌駅からは地下鉄に乗って一つ先の大通公園で下車。さっぽろ雪まつりの会場であるその地で 1 日目を過ごします。

On Day 2, we head to Sapporo Kokusai Ski Resort on the outskirts of the city for a day on the slopes, followed by a night at a traditional inn in the nearby hot spring town Jozankei.

2 日目は、市の郊外にある札幌国際スキー場へ向かい、1 日ゲレンデで過ごします。それから定山渓温泉郷近くにある旅館で一泊します。

Day 1

1 日目

The flight from Haneda Airport in Tokyo to Shin-Chitose Airport in Sapporo takes about 90 minutes and is one of the busiest air routes in the world.

羽田空港から新千歳空港までの空の旅は、およそ 90 分ほど。世界でも有数の混雑航路。

I'm in Odori Park at the Sapporo Snow Festival.

さっぽろ雪まつり会場のある大通公園に来ました。

So, the festival has three event sites, but Odori Park is where the main events are held including the really big snow sculptures.

このお祭りは 3 つの会場で催されますが、大通公園ではものすごく大きな雪像が設置されていて、主なイベントはここで行われます。

The Sapporo Snow Festival held during the first half of February each year for about a week.

さっぽろ雪まつりは、毎年 2 月前半に 1 週間開催される。

The Snow Festival has three main sites: Odori Park for snow sculptures, Susukino for ice sculptures, and Tsu Dome for snow activities.

雪まつりのメイン会場は 3 つ。大通公園には雪像、すすきのには氷像があり、ツドームでは雪中アクティビティが楽しめる。

You can't come to Sapporo and not try ramen.

札幌に来たら、ラーメンを食べずには帰れませんよ。

A classic place to grab a bowl is right here at Ramen Yokocho.

ラーメンが食べられる場所と言えば、ラーメン横丁。

The Sapporo TV Tower is one of the best places to observe Odori Park. During the Snow Festival it stays open late, providing excellent night views as well.

札幌テレビ塔は、大通公園を眺めるのに最高の場所の一つ。雪まつりの時期は遅くまでオープンしていて、素晴らしい夜景を眺めることができる。

The Sapporo Beer Garden's most famous dish is a barbecued mutton and vegetable meal called "Genghis Khan" after the Mongolian ruler.

サッポロビール園の定番メニューは羊の肉や野菜を焼いた、モンゴルの皇帝の名にちなんだ「ジンギスカン」という料理。

At night the main road in Susukino is closed to car traffic so pedestrian can enjoy the ice sculptures up close.

夜は、すすきのの主要道路が車両通行止めとなるので、歩行者はじっくりと氷像を楽しむことができる。

Day 2

The drive from central Sapporo to the Sapporo Kokusai Ski Resort takes about an hour.

札幌中心部から札幌国際スキーまでは、車でおよそ 1 時間ほど。

At most ski resorts in Japan it's possible to rent everything from skis and snowboards to snow pants, jackets, gloves, and hats.

日本のほとんどのスキー場では、スキーやスノーボード、スキーウェア、手袋、帽子など、すべてレンタル可能。

Japan is one of the foremost winter sport destinations in the world.

日本は世界屈指のウィンタースポーツの名所の一つです。

And in particular Hokkaido is a Mecca for people looking for great powder snow.

また、特に北海道は、良質なパウダースノーを求めている人たちにとってメッカです。

There are many resorts within easy access of Sapporo, and we're at one today, and I can't wait to get on the slopes so let's go.

札幌からのアクセスが良いスキー場も多く、僕たちはそのうちの一つに来ています。ゲレンデで滑るのが待ちきれません！さあ行きましょう。

In most ski lodge cafeterias it's common to pay for meals at a meal ticket vending machine.

ロッジの食堂では、自動販売機で食券を買うのが一般的。

After snowboarding there's nothing better than staying the night at a ryokan in an onsen town, which is exactly what we're doing tonight.

スノーボードを楽しんだら、温泉地の旅館でひと晩を過ごすのが一番です。今夜は、まさにその通りにするつもり。

Jozankei is a mountain valley town famous for its hot springs and quaint Japanese style inns.

定山渓は渓谷の町で、温泉と趣のある旅館で知られる。

Multi-course "kaiseki" meals at Japanese inns usually feature local specialty dishes and ingredients.

日本の旅館で出される品数豊富な「懐石」料理では、多くの場合、郷土料理や地元の食材が供される。
