so you've probably heard of this verb 'catch' right?

"catch"という動詞、聞いたことがありますよね？

But did you know that you can catch a cold?

"Catch a cold"という表現、知っていましたか？

That you can catch on fire?

"Catch on fire"は？

Or catch a whiff of something?

"Catch a whiff of something"は？

If you catch a cold, it means you're sick.

"catch a cold"とは、体調を崩していることです。

You can catch the flu, you can catch a virus or any

インフルエンザにかかったり、ウイルスにかかったり、

type of airborne sickness.

It's something that you can catch.

"catch"するものです。

My throat is kind of starting to hurt,

I think I've caught a cold.

You can also catch what someone said.

Or not catch it if you didn't quite hear them.

I just caught a whiff of something delicious!

Can you smell it?

If you catch a whiff of something, it means that you

”catch a whiff of something"とは、

can smell something.

何かのにおいがする、ということです。

Now it could be something good like a freshly baked

このにおいというのは、焼きたての

cake or loaf of bread

ケーキやパンだったり、

but it could also be something bad.

何か悪いにおいの可能性もあります。

When we walked past his room, I caught a whiff

of his dirty gym clothes.

Now if something catches your eye,

"something catches your eye"とは、

then it attracts your attention.

あなたの関心を惹きつける、ということです。

You're curious and you're interested.

興味があって、関心を持っています。

It's something that you desire or you want.

願っていること、欲しいものですね。

A cute little cafe on the corner caught my eye

角にある、小さなかわいいカフェが目にとまったんだ、

when I was walking by.

散歩していた時に。

I'd like to go there for lunch one day.

いつか、ランチを食べに行ってみたいな。

I think the guy who made your coffee this morning

今朝コーヒーを淹れてくれた男の人、

caught your eye.

Now notice that this expression is used, often used,

この表現が使われる時は、たいていの場合、

with past or perfect tenses because usually

過去形か完了形です。なぜなら通常、

it's unexpected, it's a surprise.

予期しない、サプライズな状況だからです。

So often you're reporting about something

after it happens.

Now there's a really subtle difference between

I'm trying to catch your attention,

I'm trying to keep you interested in this lesson

and it's a deliberate action.

We created the advertisement to be really catchy.

We wanted to catch the attention of shoppers

as they walk past.

We use 'catch' to say goodbye informally.

インフォーマルに「さようなら」と言う時も、"catch"を使います。

Catch you later!

Catch you later!

Catch you soon! Or catch you in a few minutes!

Catch you soon!や、Catch you in a few minutes!も言えます。

And these are all ways of saying see you soon.

これらは全て、see you soonの別の言い方です。
