  • Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Noun Phrase 107. The noun phase today is deep

  • pockets. Okay. Let's take a look at the note here. If a person or organization

  • has deep pockets, it means they are wealthy or have a lot of financial

  • resources. Now of course . this, this alludes to the idea that your pockets

  • are deep. You know could be filled with money. So a lot more money could be going

  • down. So if you got deep pockets that means that you must have a lot of money

  • or again a lot of financial resources. So it's almost a little self-explanatory.

  • Anyway, let's let's continue. Let's look at some of the examples here. Example

  • number one. It is not easy to sue that company. They have deep pockets and can

  • afford the best lawyers. If your case gets prolonged you know like extended.

  • You know, anything could happen . sometimes in law cases. Or is caught up and

  • appeals like even if you won maybe they could appeal again or maybe you might

  • think that you could try to appeal again and these just tack on or add on more

  • and more costs. They may have the money to do that but it might be difficult

  • for you to do that. You get quite a bit appeals and they can afford it but you

  • cannot. So be careful. You might not want to try to sue somebody that has deep

  • pockets. Okay. Well, le's look at number two. That

  • new enterprise, enterprise has attracted a lot of investors with deep pockets.

  • Yeah. A lot of times we hear deep pockets used with investors so investors with

  • deep pockets. Investors that have a lot of money. So maybe you don't need that

  • many investors because these investors you know each one could offer a

  • significant amount of money. They have deep pockets. Okay. And number three here.

  • I don't think you can win a price war with that ... with your competition. They

  • have deep pockets and you don't. They could easily

  • afford to outlast you. So sometimes with price wars that's what you do. You both

  • lower prices. You take lower and lower profit margins until maybe one of you

  • gives up. And in this case if they have a lot of deep pockets and you don't, well

  • then you know they might end up winning and you may not because they could make

  • it last a lot longer. Okay. Anyway, I hope you got it. I hope it was clear. Thank you for

  • your time. Bye-bye.
