In terms of the perp's side of the story, all reports say that he ran into the building, poured gasoline everywhere, and shouted, "Die, die!"

犯人に関しては、彼が建物内に走って入り、ガソリンを辺りにまき散らして、「死ね、死ね！」と叫んだと、あらゆる報道で伝えられています。

And when I first heard about this, my first thought was, "Disgruntled employee."

このニュースを初めて耳にした時、僕が初めに思ったのは「不満を持った従業員がやったんだろう」ということでした。

But that didn't make any sense for a couple (of) reasons, both of which add to the horrifying nature of this tragedy.

でもこの説は論理的ではありませんでした。それには2つ理由があって、それが両方とも、この悲劇の恐ろしい性質を、さらに悪化させています。

First is KyoAni's work culture, which has been the gold standard for Japanese animation studios.

まず1つ目の理由は、京アニの労働文化です。それは、日本のアニメスタジオの規範となるものです。

Despite the Japanese animation industry breaking records year after year in terms of profit, especially as the demand for anime continues to balloon in countries like the US and China,

the elephant in the room has been the self-destructive business practices of many studios.

しかし多くのアニメスタジオにおいては、「見て見ぬふり」という自己破壊的なビジネススタイルが貫かれています。

The animators themselves⏤the heart, soul, and backbone of the medium⏤are treated as subhuman by the majority of these studios.

こういったスタジオの大半において、アニメ制作者たち、彼らの心や精神、アニメという芸術を支えるものは、人間未満の扱いを受けています。

Nearly all of them live below the poverty line.

アニメ業界に従事する人のほぼ全員が、低所得で生活しています。

The studio heads pocket all the profit, while the people responsible for their success get nothing.

スタジオのトップたちが利益を受け取り、スタジオの成功の鍵を握る人たちは、何も得ていません。

This is the norm for most Japanese business in general, but a glaring stain on the anime industry, given the amount of money that's generated.

これは、日本のビジネス全体において一般的です。でもアニメ業界に関しては、その利益を考慮すると、実態の悪さが際立ちます。

But Kyoto Animation Studio was the anti-status-quo studio.

しかし京都アニメーションは、その体制に反していました。

While other studios were paying their employees roughly 500 dollars a month and placing them on freelancer contracts to avoid having to offer any kind of benefits, which ultimately leads to a mind-blowing 90% of animators quitting within 3 years,

他のスタジオでは、従業員にひと月約500ドルを支払い、フリーランスや契約で雇うことで、福利厚生を免れています。その結果、なんと90%ものアニメーターたちが、3年以内に辞職しているのです…

KyoAni staffs their animators, places them on salary, and doesn't impose unrealistic deadlines just for the sake of making a quicker buck.

でも京アニではアニメーターを月給制で雇っています。そして、理不尽な納期を設定して早く利益を出そうとはしていません。

Not only that, they nurture their talent with programs that allow them to further master their craft and fully realize their potential as animators working on their life's passion.

さらに、プログラムを通して能力を育成し、技術をさらに身につけ、人生の情熱をかけたアニメーターとしての潜在能力を、しっかりと認識できるように取り組んでいます。

This is especially important because most people who graduate college in Japan don't actually enter their field of study.

これは特に重要なことです。なぜなら日本の大学卒業者が、専攻した内容の職業に実際に就くことは、ほぼないからです。

In fact, most college graduates don't even expect to enter their field of study, so it's very important that those who actually get to pursue the things that they love and have studied for years feel fulfilled in doing so.

実際、大半の大学卒業者は、専攻した分野で就職することを期待してもいません。だから、自分が愛すること、何年も勉強してきたことを実際に追求していく上で、彼らが達成感を感じられるようにするのは、すごく重要なのです。

And that's why Kyoto Animation Studio was so important.

The result of this is masterpieces like "A Silent Voice".

この体制の結果が、『聲の形』のような傑作です。

So, some months ago, I made a video about bullying in Japanese culture and how it's depicted in anime, and I used "A Silent Voice" as an example.

数ヶ月前、僕は日本文化におけるイジメと、それがアニメでどのように描かれているかに関するビデオを作りました。そこで、『聲の形』を引き合いに出しました。

A lot of anime have depicted bullying in the past, but, usually, it's in passing.

過去にもイジメを扱ったアニメはたくさんあったのですが、大抵は話の伏線でした。

But "A Silent Voice" made bullying the focal point of the story, which I felt was very much-needed,

でも『聲の形』では、イジメがストーリーの中心だったのです。僕は、これがすごく必要なことだと思いました。

given the rising suicide rate among Japanese youth, with bullying as a contributing factor.

日本の若者の自殺率は上昇しており、イジメもその要因です。

While the anime film "Your Name" was heralded at the time of its release, "A Silent Voice", which was released around the same time, outshined it in many ways, being celebrated not only for its amazing quality of animation but also the harsh cultural issues that it addressed.

アニメ映画『君の名は』は公開時に歓待されました。でも同時期に公開された『聲の形』は、高品質なアニメに加え、文化に関する厳しい問題を扱うなど、多くの点で「君の名は」を上回る作品だったのです。

So, not only has Kyoto Animation Studio contributed positively to Japanese work culture but they've contributed positively to society as a whole.

京都アニメーションスタジオは、日本の労働文化だけでなく、社会全体にプラスの貢献をしています。

Of course, we probably best know KyoAni for giving us "Haruhi Suzumiya", one of my personal top 5 anime series and movie of all time.

もちろん、京アニを一番有名にしたのは、おそらく「涼宮ハルヒ」の存在でしょう。これは、僕の好きなアニメシリーズと映画のトップ5の1つです。

Now, I won't go into a full character analysis because that's not what this video is about.

このビデオの目的から外れてしまうので、ここではキャラクターの分析には深入りしません。

But when you think about overpowered anime characters, Haruhi is typically left out of the conversation.

ハルヒは通常なら、最強のアニメキャラクターとしては考えられないでしょう。

But she's not only a god, she's god-god.

でもハルヒは、ただの神ではなく、最強の神なのです。

Her will is her power and she's completely unaware of it.

彼女の意志が彼女の力であり、彼女はそれを全く自覚していません。

She can collapse multiverses "accidentally".

多元的宇宙を崩壊させられるのです…それも偶然に。

You can make a strong, solid case that Haruhi Suzumiya is the most powerful anime character ever.

涼宮ハルヒが史上最強のアニメキャラクターだと、強く、確かな議論ができます。

And the fact that Kyoto Animation Studio brought us that in the form of a woman is huge, especially in the context of gender roles in Japan.

日本における性別の役割を考えれば、京都アニメーションスタジオが、このキャラクターを女性として描いたことが大きいのです。

If you think misogyny is rampant in America, you'd be horrified by Japan's treatment of women.

アメリカで女性蔑視が蔓延していると思うなら、日本が女性をどのように扱うか知って恐怖を抱くでしょう。

That's why when I go to Japanese anime conventions or events where there's cosplay, I'm pleasantly surprised by the amount of girls dressed as Haruhi.

だから、日本で、コスプレが行われるアニメコンベンションやイベントに行くと、たくさんの女の子がハルヒの格好をしているのを見て驚くのです。

Sure, the cute dance probably has something to do with it.

もちろん、かわいいダンスも、人気の要因でしょう。

But that doesn't negate the fact that her simultaneous strength and fragility offer something for young women in this society to draw inspiration from.

でもだからと言って、強くありながらも虚弱な面を同時に持つ彼女の姿が、この社会の若い女性たちにインスピレーションをもたらしている事実は否めせん。

And that's thanks to Kyoto Animation Studio.

これは、京都アニメーションスタジオの功績です。

And that's what makes this tragedy so much harder to swallow.

だから、この火事の悲劇を受け入れるのが、ものすごく辛いのです。

I really want all fans of anime to not only reflect on KyoAni's body of work, but what that work has meant to the greater good.

全てのアニメファンには、京アニの作品を思い起こすだけでなく、彼らの作品が社会全体の利益のためにどんな意味を持つのか、考えてほしいと強く思います。

They are one of the good ones.

京アニは、良い会社の1つですから。

They do right by their employees, they do right by their country, and they do right by their fans.
