YR: I was born and raised near Manchester,

but I'm not going to say it in English to you,

because I'm trying to avoid any assumptions

マンチェスター近郊ですが 英語では話しません

that might be made from my northern accent.

私が話す北部訛りで

YR: The only problem with masking it

with Chinese Mandarin

中国語で訛りを隠すことには

is I can only speak this paragraph,

which I have learned by heart

私が中国を訪れた時に

when I was visiting in China. (Laughter)

暗記したこのフレーズしか

So all I can do is keep repeating it in different tones

話せないことです　（笑）

and hope you won't notice.

だから同じフレーズを 色々なトーンで繰り返して

YR: Needless to say, I would like to apologize

As a child, I would hate being made

申し訳ありません

to wear the Indian kurta pajama,

子どもの頃 インド風の ―

because I didn't think it was very cool.

クルターのパジャマを 着せられるのが嫌でした

It felt a bit girly to me, like a dress,

カッコよくなかったから

and it had this baggy trouser part

ドレスみたいで 女の子っぽくて ―

you had to tie really tight

ズボンはゆるゆるで

to avoid the embarrassment of them falling down.

ちゃんと縛っていないと

My dad never wore it,

下がってきて 恥ずかしいんです

so I didn't see why I had to.

父はまったく着なかったから

Also, it makes me feel a bit uncomfortable,

私も着なくていいと 思っていました

that people assume I represent something

それに 着ると なんだか居心地が悪いんです

genuinely Indian when I wear it,

私が純インド風なんだと

because that's not how I feel.

誰もが思ってしまうんです

自分ではそんな風に 思っていないのに

YR: Actually, the only way I feel comfortable

HP: （中国語で）

wearing it is by pretending

YR: 落ち着いて これを身に付けられる ―

they are the robes of a kung fu warrior

たった一つの方法は

like Li Mu Bai from that film,

カンフーの達人の 衣装だと思い込むことです

So my artwork is about identity and language,

さて ―

challenging common assumptions

私が作品で扱うのは アイデンティティと言語 ―

based on how we look like or where we come from,

それから 見た目や出身地や

gender, race, class.

ジェンダーや人種 階級に根差している ―

What makes us who we are anyway?

厄介な思い込みです

HP: (In Chinese)

では 私達を「私達」に しているのは何でしょうか？

YR: I used to read Spider-Man comics,

HP: （中国語で）

watch kung fu movies,

YR: 昔はよく『スパイダーマン』を読み

take philosophy lessons from Bruce Lee.

カンフー映画を見て

He would say things like --

ブルース・リーの哲学を学びました

HP: Empty your mind.

彼はこう言いました

(Laughter)

HP: 「心を空っぽにしろ ―

Be formless, shapeless, like water.

（笑）

Now you put water into a cup.

姿も形もなくすんだ 水のように・・・

It becomes the cup.

水はカップに注がれれば

You put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle.

カップの形になり

Put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot.

ビンに注がれれば ビンになる

Now, water can flow

急須に注がれれば 急須になる

or it can crash.

水は静かな流れにも ―

Be water, my friend. (Applause)

激流にもなれる

YR: This year, I am 32 years old,

友よ 水になるんだ」（拍手）

the same age Bruce Lee was when he died.

YR: 私は今年で32才です

I have been wondering recently,

ブルース・リーが 亡くなった年齢です

if he were alive today,

私は最近考えるんです

what advice he would give me

もし彼が生きていて

about making this TED Talk.

私がTEDで話すと聞いたら

HP: Don't imitate my voice.

どんなアドバイスを してくれるだろうって

It offends me.

HP: 「声まねはするな

(Laughter)

不愉快だ」

YR: Good advice,

（笑）

but I still think that we learn who we are

YR: もっともな助言です

by copying others.

でも 人を真似ることで 私達は自分が何者なのかを

Who here hasn't imitated their childhood hero

学べると思っています

in the playground, or mum or father?

皆さんだって 子どもの頃のヒーローや

I have.

母さんや父さんを 真似してきたでしょう

HP: A few years ago, in order to make this video

私は真似しました

for my artwork, I shaved off all my hair

HP: 数年前 作品で使おうと思って このビデオを撮りました

so that I could grow it back as my father had it

髪をそり落としてから

when he first emigrated from India

また生やして 父が1960年代に

to the U.K. in the 1960s.

インドから最初に移住してきた ―

He had a side parting and a neat mustache.

その時の髪型にしました

At first, it was going very well.

父は横分けにしていて 口ひげを整えていました

I even started to get discounts in Indian shops.

最初は上手くいきました

(Laughter)

インド人の店で 値引きしてくれる程でした

But then very quickly,

（笑）

I started to underestimate

ところが

my mustache growing ability,

ひげが生えるスピードが

and it got way too big.

思ったより速くて

It didn't look Indian anymore.

伸びすぎてしまったんです

Instead, people from across the road,

こうなると インド人には見えません

they would shout things like --

皆が道の向こう側から

HP and YR: Arriba! Arriba! Ándale! Ándale!

スペイン語を叫んでくるんです

(Laughter)

HP and YR: アリーバ アリーバ！ アンダレ アンダレ！

HP: Actually, I don't know why I am even talking like this.

（笑）

My dad doesn't even have an Indian accent anymore.

HP: 本当は こんな インド訛りもなくていい

He talks like this now.

訛りなんて 父にも ないんですから

So it's not just my father that I've imitated.

今ではイギリス風の話し方です

A few years ago I went to China for a few months,

結局 私が真似てきたのは 父だけではないのです

and I couldn't speak Chinese,

数年前に中国に 何か月か滞在しましたが

and this frustrated me,

私は中国語が話せません

so I wrote about this and had it translated

そんな不満を

into Chinese, and then I learned this by heart,

文章に書いて

like music, I guess.

中国語に翻訳してもらい 暗記したんです

YR: This phrase is now etched into my mind

音楽みたいにね

clearer than the pin number to my bank card,

YR: この文章は記憶に刻まれていて

so I can pretend I speak Chinese fluently.

カードの暗唱番号より はっきり覚えています

When I had learned this phrase,

だから中国語が 達者なフリができるんです

I had an artist over there hear me out

この文章を覚えてすぐに

to see how accurate it sounded.

中国のアーティストに

I spoke the phrase, and then he laughed

どのくらい正確か 聞いてもらいました

and told me, "Oh yeah, that's great,

私がしゃべると 彼は笑って言いました

only it kind of sounds like a woman."

「すごく上手だけど

I said, "What?"

女言葉みたいだよ」

He said, "Yeah, you learned from a woman?"

どういうことか聞くと

I said, "Yes. So?"

「女性に習ったんだろ？」と 言われました

He then explained the tonal differences

「そうだけど 何で？」

between male and female voices

そこで彼は説明してくれました

are very different and distinct, and that I had learned it very well,

男性と女性では

but in a woman's voice.

言葉のトーンが 明らかに違うことでした

(Laughter)

よく覚えたけれど 女性の口調だったんです

(Applause)

（笑）

HP: Okay. So this imitation business

（拍手）

does come with risk.

HP: この様に人を真似ることにも

It doesn't always go as you plan it,

リスクがあります

even with a talented translator.

どんなに優秀な通訳がいたって

But I am going to stick with it,

思い通りに行くとは限りません

because contrary to what we might usually assume,

それでも私はあきらめません

imitating somebody can reveal something unique.

というのも 普通の発想とは逆で

So every time I fail

誰かを真似ると自分の個性が あらわになるからです

to become more like my father,

父の真似が

I become more like myself.

うまくいかない時には

Every time I fail to become Bruce Lee,

私は私自身になっています

I become more authentically me.

ブルース・リーの 真似がうまくいかない時は

This is my art.

私は本当の私になっています

I strive for authenticity,

これが私のアートです

even if it comes in a shape

一生懸命 本物を求めています

that we might not usually expect.

私達があまり予想しないような

It's only recently that I've started to understand

形をとることもあります

that I didn't learn to sit like this

最近になって気づいたんですが

through being Indian.

こんな風に 座るようになったのは

I learned this from Spider-Man.

インド人だからという わけではなくて

(Laughter)

スパイダーマンを読んで 覚えたんです
