この子たちがいるお家は、本当にそうなの！

I'm talking about cats!

私が話してたのは、ネコちゃんのことです！

And even if you do have a cat of your own, I bet you don't know some amazing things about our furry little friends!

そしてネコを飼ってるみんなも、自分のネコちゃんが持ってるすんごいチカラをまだまだ全部は知ってないんじゃないかな！

For example, did you know that all pet cats are actually related to lions, and other big cats, like tigers, leopards, and jaguars?

例えば、ペットのネコって全部、ライオンとかトラ、それにヒョウにジャガーっていう大きなネコ科の動物の一種だって知ってた？

Wait...this...is related to this?

でも…これと…これが仲間なの？

Yes, it is!

実はそうなの！

All cats, from the biggest tiger to the tiniest of house cats, evolved from the same small, cat-like creature that lived millions of years ago called Proailurus...or "first cat."

おっきなネコ科の動物からちっちゃなペットのネコまで、ネコは全部、大昔にいた最初のネコのプロアイルルス、って言う小さな動物から進化したの。

Then, after a long time, there came to be two major types of cats.

それから長い時間が経って、ネコは2つのタイプに分かれたの。

One kind became the bigger cats, like the lion and the tiger.

片方はライオンとかトラみたいに大型のネコになって、

And the other kind became the smaller cats, which includes the ones we keep as pets today.

もう片方は、私たちがペットとして飼ってるような小さなネコになったわけ。

So…if all the big cats and all little the cats descended from this same animal from long, long ago...that means they're related!

つまり…大きなネコと小さなネコがみーんな大昔に同じ動物からやってきたっていうことは…お互いに同じ仲間だって事になるでしょ！

Even if it is only distantly.

たとえ、遠い関係だとしても。

That's one big furry family!

それって、とってもおっきな家族よね！

Now, another cool thing about cats?

他にもネコのすごいこと知りたい？

They have excellent hearing!

耳がとってもいいの！

Lots of animals, including dogs, have better hearing than we do.

多くの動物が、犬もそうだけど、人間よりも聞く能力は優れてるんだけと、

But cats can hear better than both humans and dogs.

ネコは犬と人間の両方よりも聞くチカラが優れてるの。

Even if your cat just looks like it's curled up and enjoying a relaxing nap, it's still extremely aware of its surroundings.

お家のネコがただ丸まってお昼寝してるように見える時でも、周りの状況にはとっても気を付けているわけ。

Their little ears are super-sensitive, and they're always listening.

耳は小っちゃいけど本当に敏感で、いつも何かを聞いてるの。

Your cat can hear everything that's going on around it, from the sound of you listening to music in your bedroom all the way upstairs, to the sound of birds chirping outside in your neighbor's yard.

ネコたちって、周りで起きてる事は何でも聞こえて、例えば2階でステレオから流れている音楽とか、お隣の家の庭で鳥がピーチク鳴いてる音もバッチリ。

In fact, cats can hear things up to four times farther away than you or I can!

実際には、ネコって私たちが聞くことができる距離の4倍遠くにある物音でも聞くことができるんだって！

Not only can they hear things from far away—they can figure out exactly where those far-away sounds are coming from.

しかも、遠くの物音をただ聞くだけじゃなくて、正確にどこから聞こえてるのかも分かるから

So if your cat's snoozing in the basement, and you open the kitchen cupboard where you keep their favorite treats, they'll probably come running.

ネコが1階でうたた寝してるときに、誰かがネコの大好きなおやつが入っている台所の食器棚を開けたら、多分走って寄ってくるでしょ。

But if you open another cabinet in a different part of the kitchen, they'll probably be able to tell the difference and just keep snoozing!

でも、別の食器棚を開けたら、そこには何にも入ってないって分かるからそのままお昼寝を続けるかもね！

Thousands of years ago, cats needed this super sense of hearing to help them track down food and to escape predators in the wild.

何千年も前には、ネコたちってエサのありかを探ったり、野生の世界で天敵から身を守るために聞くチカラを研ぎ澄ませなちゃいけなかったんだけど

Today, now that they live among humans who help provide for them, they don't need it quite as much.

今の時代は面倒を見てくれる人間と一緒に住むようになったから、そんなに聞くチカラは必要なくなったの。

But it's always good to know when that treat cupboard opens!

でも、美味しいおやつの入ってる棚の扉が開いたのを分かるってのはイイ感じよね！

And lastly, our third cool thing about cats: They rule!

そして、最後に、ネコのすっごいチカラその3。　ネコはリーダーだ！

Well, sort of!

っていうか、何となくね！

Some ancient cultures—like people who lived in Egypt thousands of years ago—treated cats like royalty, almost as if they were kings and queens!

古代文化の中には、例えば何千年前のエジプトに住んでた人たちとかは、ネコを王様や女王みたいな皇族として扱ってたの！

Early Egyptians were thought to have had problems with rats in their homes.

古代エジプト人は、多分家に中にいるネズミに悩まされていたんだろうって思われていて、

In order to get rid of the rats, they brought in cats to hunt them.

ネズミを追い払うために、ネコを飼うようになったわけ。

And the people liked the cats so much that they kept them and treated them extremely well.

そしたらあまりにネコが良い仕事をしてくれるから大好きになって、本当に大切に扱うようになったって感じ。

Ancient Egyptians even mummified the animals for their journey to the afterlife—just like they did with their human rulers!

古代エジプト人たちは、ネコをミイラ化させてあの世への旅を助けたの。これも人間のリーダーたちと同じような扱い方ね！

So, sorry, dogs.

だから、ワンちゃんたちには悪いんだけど、

In ancient Egypt at least, cats ran the show!

少なくとも古代エジプトにおいては、ネコが世の中で権威を誇ったのね！

Now, the next time you see a cat, you'll know that you're looking at a super-cuddly animal with super-hearing that was once treated like royalty and is related to lions and tigers!

だから、今度ネコを見かけたら、一見コロコロしてて可愛らしいこの動物は聞くチカラがすごくて、昔は皇族のように扱われていて、ライオンやトラの仲間なんだってことを思い出してね！
