Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Noun Phrase 61. The noun phrase today is
fat cat. Okay let's take a look at the note here. If you refer to someone as a
fat cat, especially a politician or rich businessman, you show that you disapprove
of the way they use their wealth and power. Fat cats were often known to give
large donations to political parties to gain more power and influence. Okay. Let's
continue here. The phrase first appeared around the 1920s to describe any rich
donors to political parties. By the mid 1950s. The definition widened. So it
increased to include more people. To include any wealthy person who is
believed to profit from the hard labor of other people. Okay. Good, let's give
some examples here. Example number one. That political party invited many fat
cats to this fundraiser to hit them up for political donations. Yeah. Sometimes
with the fundraisers they, maybe they'll offer them a dinner and they'll have the
dinner at you know, I don't know, two thousand dollars a plate and even
besides that, they may go up to them and hope that they write them some checks as
well. So that's one way we might hear it. Or number two. That fat cat hired a firm to
lobby for and against certain bills in Congress. Well whatever is in their favor.
Whatever you know, will give them profit or will be for them, for what they want,
for their agenda. Okay, Anyway I hope you got it. I hope it's clear. Thank you for your
time. Bye-bye.
