Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition which can target skin, nails and even joints. The autoimmune condition is a result of the body creating new skin cells faster than older cells can be eliminated. This leads to an avalanche of skin cells; they pile up, push up and leave the skin looking dry. Also, these silvery patches itch continuously. So what's at the root of this skin cell build up? It can stem from many causes, including diabetes, high levels of stress, obesity, medications and smoking. Infections can also worsen the condition. Although there is no absolute cure for psoriasis, symptoms can be controlled by topical oils. In today's video we'll review a few specific types of oil treatment. Tea Tree Oil This oil, which is from the leaves of the Melaleuca tree, contains antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. These can provide much needed relief from redness, itching, and burning sensations. Tea tree oil exfoliates dry, flaky skin cells and softens the plaques, thus reducing itching. As the anti-inflammatory properties penetrate the skin layers, they reduce swelling and redness. Occasionally, the oil can lessen the appearance of scar tissue caused by psoriasis. Try experimenting with one of the following types of tea tree oil treatment: 1. Topical solution Since tree tea oil is potent, it should always be diluted with water or other oils. Applying full strength could result in irritation and burning sensations. To create your own solution for application of the scalp, nails or skin, follow these directions: In a small cup of water, mix in a few drops of tea tree oil Dab a cotton ball into the solution to moisten Apply the solution to the skin, scalp or nails Allow it to remain overnight In the morning wash the areas and pat dry Repeat daily Other natural moisturizers such as olive or coconut oil can also provide a soothing effect. After bathing, you may want to add a drop or two of tea tree oil with your daily moisturizer. 2. Tea Tree Oil Bath An immersion in a tub of water enhanced with tea tree oil can provide a world of relief to those who suffer with psoriasis. Simply add a few drops of tea tree oil, almond oil, or olive oil to your bathwater. Soak for 20 minutes daily. 3. Tea Tree Oil with Shampoo Dry itchy skin that's under attack by psoriasis? First, make sure your shampoo contains very few chemicals. And when you shampoo: Mix 1 part of tea tree oil with 10 parts shampoo Once completely blended, shampoo your hair Rinse your hair thoroughly with warm water Repeat as needed You may also check your health and beauty aisles for shampoos that already contain tea tree oil. Tips and Precautions Consult your dermatologist before using any type of topical treatment Remember tea tree oil is too potent for any direct application Use 2 – 5% concentration of tea tree oil in homemade remedies Always perform a patch test on healthy skin. If you observe adverse reactions, do not use. If the symptoms of psoriasis become worse instead of better, stop using it.
