Welcome back to another episode of FTD facts
I'm Leroy, Kenton, and yeah
We're jumping into this debatable topic because you guys have been requesting for me to do this video for a very
long time
Here's all the requests
Now before I continue the question I wanna ask is should Kashmir join Pakistan
India or be independent now beginning with the origin of the dispute now, so
Kashmir is the northernmost region of the Indian subcontinent
more specifically Jammu and Kashmir the Kashmir dispute dates back from
1947 the partition of the Indian subcontinent
Along religious lines led to the formation of India and Pakistan, but they were still around
650 States run by princes which existed inside these two independent
countries in theory these princely states had the option of deciding which country to join or
remaining independent
But in reality the population of these states
Chose which country they wanted to join they had been struggling to get freedom from the British for almost
100 years and now that they had gotten what they
Wanted they were not going to just let the princess make the decisions for them
Kashmir was one of these states and because of its location it could join either India or Pakistan
The Mahara of Kashmir was Hindu while the majority of its population wasn't Muslim so he decided to stay
Neutral when it came to choosing
Now let's talk about the war of 1947 the hopes of remaining neutral crumbled on October 1947
Pakistan sent in Muslim tribes men who are knocking at the gates of the capital of Srinagar?
to try and persuade the Maharaja
The Maharaja Hari Singh appealed to the Indian government for military assistance and fled to India. He signed the Instrument of Accession
Giving up Kashmir to India on October 26
so India and Pakistani forces fought their first war over Kashmir in
1947 to 1948 in a resolution dated August 13 1948 the UN asked Pakistan to remove its troops
After which India was also to withdraw the bulk of its forces
India haven't taken the issue to the UN was confident since the most influential
Kashmiri mass leader Sheikh Abdullah was firmly on India's side an
Emergency government was formed on October 30th
1948 with Sheikh Abdullah as a prime minister
Pakistan ignored the UN mandate and
continued fighting
Holding on to the portion of Kashmir under its control
On January 1st
1949 a ceasefire was agreed with
65% of the territory under Indian control and the remainder with
Pakistan in the year 1957 now Kashmir was formally incorporated into the Indian Union
Continuing on now talking about the Kargil war when the Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee
Set out to Lahore by bus On February 20th 1999
inaugurating the four times a week Delhi to Lahore to Delhi bus service the world felt that such a genuine effort at
Friendly neighbourhood relations would lower the tensions along the line of control in Kashmir
But all hopes of diplomacy disappeared once the cross, LOC
Firing in Kargil began during the mid-1990s the death toll including both soldiers and civilians was more than thirty
thousand
despite much pressure from the military and public the Indian government decided not to cross the
LOC the conflict ended only after Bill Clinton the US president and Nawaz Sharif
Pakistan's prime minister met in Washington on July 4th 1999
Now despite a lot of the violence. There is still some hope
the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative
Assembly election in
2014 was held in the state of Jammu and Kashmir in five phases from the 25th of November
to the 20th of December 2014
despite repeated boycott calls by separatist hariette leaders
elections recorded the highest voters turnout in the last 25 years
That is more than 65%
Which is more than usual voting percentage in other states in India like even the European?
Parliament on the behalf of the European Union welcomed the smooth conduct of the state legislative
elections in Jammu and Kashmir
But there still has remained constant violence on July 8th 2016 a popular militant leader
Berhan mujesar hwanhee was cornered by the security forces and killed
protests had taken place leading to an
amplified instability in the Kashmir Valley
curfews had been imposed in all 10 districts of Kashmir cell phone and internet service Sid had also been blocked and
newspapers have also been restricted in many parts of the state
Also in pretty recent development and attacked by four militants on an army base in India in the state of Jammu and Kashmir
on September 8th 2016 was also known as a
2016 urea attack that resulted in 19 soldiers losing their lives as well as the militants
themselves the Indians were particularly shaken by the event which they blamed on
Pakistan on the Pakistani side military alertness was raised and some Pakistan International Airlines flights were
Suspended so that was your breakdown and a Bri history on the Kashmir dispute from the beginning to current days
