Well, one of my hardest days as an optometrist came about five or six years ago when we saw
a patient in the office who wasn't seeing so well and the patient had assumed that it
was because his contact lens didn't have the right prescription and so he'd come in to
try to get that addressed. Through the course of the exam things just didn't seem to match
up. We got to a point where we looked into the back of the patient's eye and we found
a cancerous tumor in the back of their eye. That was very tough to explain to the patient
why they weren't seeing well and what the nature of the problem was. And just to have
them then be seen by other doctors and see how that patient's life evolved over time.
Fortunately, it turned out to be a really, really great story. But at that moment that
was probably, and even to this day that was probably the most gut wrenching day as an
optometrist.
