We can use 'while' and 'during' to say that a shorter event happened within a longer event.

'while'も'during'も、ある長期間の出来事の中で、短時間に起きたことを述べるのに使えます。

They mean the same, but the grammar's different.

意味は同じですが、文法は異なります。

After 'while', we have a clause.

'while'の後には、節が来ます。

A clause is a group of words containing a subject and a verb.

節とは、主語と動詞のある単語のまとまりです。

So we can say:

例えば、

While I was having lunch, my phone rang.

While I was having lunch, my phone rang.（昼食を食べている間に、電話が鳴った。）

Remember that the verb in the while clause is usually in an ING form.

while節の動詞は、通常 - ingの形をとります。

We can also use 'while' with just an ING form.

また、'while'の後で、 動詞の - ing形だけを使うこともできます。

So we can say:

例えば、

While having lunch, my phone rang.

While having lunch, my phone rang.（昼食を食べている間に、電話が鳴った。）

So we remove the subject and the 'be' verb.

主語とbe動詞を除きます。

However, 'during' is different because it can only be used with a noun phrase.

でも、'during'は異なります。名詞節としか使うことができません。

So we can say:

例えば、

During lunch, my phone rang.

During lunch, my phone rang.（昼食を食べている間に、電話が鳴った。）

We cannot use a clause or just the ING form.

説や、動詞の - ing形だけと共に使うことはできません。

So, same meaning, but different grammar!
