So welcome to the library, if you're learning English, books are one of the best things that you can use to help improve your English,

図書館へようこそ。英語を学ぶなら、本は英語上達に役立つ最高のものの一つです。

and libraries are really cool because they're free to you.

図書館は無料で使えるから本当にいいですよね。

If you have a library card, here's mine right here, if you have a library card which is free, you can go to your local library and you can borrow a book.

これは私のですが、もし図書館のカードをお持ちなら、無料の図書館のカードを持っていれば、近くの図書館に行き、本を借りることができます。

When you first walk into a library you will see the front desk and there will be a librarian sitting at the front desk.

図書館に初めて足を踏み入れると、フロントデスクがあって、司書が座っています。

I'm not a actually a librarian but fun fact, an interesting thing about Bob the Canadian, my mom is actually a librarian.

私は司書ではないのですが、カナダ人のボブの面白いところは、私の母が実は司書なんです。

Anyways the front desk is where you will bring your books in order to check them out, or to sign them out.

とにかくフロントは、本を貸し出すため、あるいはサインをするために、本を持っていくところです。

So once you've gone through the library and you've found one or two books to read, this is the place where you would come to sign them out.

図書館を回って、読みたい本が1冊か2冊見つかったら、ここにサインをしに来ることになるのです。

The librarian will have a little scanner and they'll "beep" the book for you.

司書が小さなスキャナーを持っていて、その本を「ピーッ」と鳴らしてくれるんです。

So in English we say "scan" or "beep" because it makes a beeping sound.

ですから、英語では「scan」とか、ビープ音が鳴るから「beep」と言うんです。

They'll go "beep" and then that book will be registered under your name as being borrowed.

すると「ピッ」と鳴って、その本があなたの名前で貸出中として登録されます。

I'm not sure if you can read this right here but it says "Book Return."

ここで読めるかどうかわかりませんが、「Book Return」と書いてありますね。

So this is a place where you could put a book in if you were returning it to the library.

つまり、ここは図書館に本を返すときに入れる場所なんですね。

Maybe the librarian is not at their desk.

司書がデスクにいない場合もあります。

You could return your book by putting it in the slot.

本をスロットに入れれば返却できます。

Sometimes when you're going to return your book to the library, the library's closed.

図書館に本を返そうと思ったら、図書館が閉まっていることもあります。

But most libraries have a book drop off slot on the outside of the library.

が、ほとんどの図書館では、図書館の外側に本の預け入れ口があります。

And you can put your books in here to return them when the library is closed and you're not able to go inside.

そして、図書館が閉まっていて中に入れないときに、ここに本を入れて返すことができます。

So libraries have a number of different book sections.

図書館には、さまざまな本のコーナーがあるんですね。

The section that I'm standing in front of here is called the "Fiction Section."

今、私が前に立っているのは、「フィクション部門」と呼ばれるセクションです。

A fiction section has books that have been written by authors where they have made up the story.

フィクション部門は、作家が物語を作り上げた本です。

So they're not true stories, they're fictional stories.

実話ではなく、フィクションなんです。

So if you think of books like "The Martian," or books like "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" they are fiction books and you would find those books in the fiction section.

ですから、『火星人』や『銀河ヒッチハイク・ガイド』のような本はフィクションであり、フィクションのコーナーに置いてあるのです。

Another section that the library will have is the "Non-Fiction Section."

もう一つ、図書館に設置されるのが、「Non-Fiction Section」です。

So the non-fiction section is a great place to get books where you're just looking for information.

ですから、ノンフィクションのコーナーは、情報を求めるだけの本を手に入れるには最適な場所なんです。

For instance, maybe you wanted a book about the Prime Ministers of Canada, so you would come to the non-fiction section to find books about information like that.

例えば、カナダの首相に関する本が欲しいから、ノンフィクションのコーナーに来て、そういう情報の本を探すとします。

In this area you'll also find books that are true stories, so biographies or auto-biographies,

このエリアには、実話をもとにした本、つまり伝記や自叙伝もあります。

which are the stories of a person's life, stories that are true, as opposed to fiction where the stories are not true.

とは、ある人の人生の物語であり、物語が真実でないフィクションとは対照的に、真実である物語です。

So this is the non-fiction section of the library.

ここは図書館のノンフィクションのコーナーなんですね。

So over here in this corner is what's called the "Reference Section" and these are Encyclopedias.

このコーナーにあるのは「参考文献」と呼ばれるもので、これは百科事典のことです。

What's interesting with encyclopedias is not a lot of people use them anymore.

百科事典の面白いところは、もうあまり使っている人がいないことです。

Most people use websites like Wikipedia or they use the internet to do their research,

ほとんどの人は、ウィキペディアのようなウェブサイトを利用したり、インターネットを使って調べたりしています

but here we have a couple of encyclopedias where you could look up information if you needed to, but I think they're actually kind of old.

でも、ここには百科事典がいくつかあって、必要な情報を調べられるようになっています。

So another part of the reference section is a place where you can find dictionaries.

そこでもう一つ、レファレンスコーナーには、辞書を探す場所があります。

And I wanted to show you this book shelf because what's really cool is right here there's a Japanese-English dictionary,

この本棚をお見せしたかったのは、ここに和英辞典があるのがとてもいいんです。

a Chinese-English dictionary, and a Spanish-English dictionary, and a French-English dictionary,

中英・西英・仏英の各辞書があります。

so sometimes at your local library you'll be able to find dictionaries that will help you learn words in different languages,

そのため、図書館には、さまざまな言語の単語を学ぶのに役立つ辞書が置いてあることがあります。

or to help you learn the English word for the language that you speak.

とか、自分が話す言語の英単語を覚えるのに役立ちます。

Another section of the library is the "Periodicals" or "Magazine Section." So this is an area where you would find monthly publications.

図書館のもう一つのセクションは、「定期刊行物」または 「雑誌コーナー 」です。つまり、ここは月刊誌を探すようなエリアなのです。

Magazines on different topics.

さまざまなテーマの雑誌があります。

If you wanted to learn about cows, if you wanted to learn how to build things or renovate your house,

牛のことを知りたかったら、モノの作り方を知りたかったら、家のリフォームを知りたかったら、

this is the place where you would come to find a magazine that would tell you how to do that.

牛のことを知りたかったら、モノの作り方を知りたかったら、家の改装を知りたかったら、その方法を教えてくれる雑誌を探しに来るところです。

“..which is a monthly magazine which shows you how to build things you would come to the magazine…"

「雑誌に来るようなモノの作り方を紹介する月刊誌です。」

Bob the Canadian is not very good at putting things on the shelf.

カナダ人のボブは、棚に物を置くのが苦手なんです。

Most libraries also have a “Kid's Section” where there are only children's books, so kids as well as adults are always welcome to go to the library to find a book to read.

また、ほとんどの図書館には、子どもの本だけを集めた「キッズコーナー」があるので、子どもだけでなく、大人もいつでも図書館に行って読みたい本を探すことができるのです。

So another nice thing about the library is that they have computers, and there's a couple of things that you can use these computers for.

図書館のもうひとつのいいところは、コンピューターがあることです。

You can use the computer to browse the internet, to look things up, or to check your email.

パソコンを使って、インターネットを見たり、調べ物をしたり、メールをチェックしたりすることができます。

But usually you can also use the computer at a library to look up where in the library you can find the book that you're looking for.

しかし、通常は図書館のコンピュータを使って、探している本が図書館のどこにあるのかを調べることもできます。

So let's say you knew a specific book that you wanted to read, you could use the computer to look that book up and it would say it's in this section, under this author's name.

例えば、読みたい本が決まっていたとして、コンピューターでその本を調べると、このセクションのこの作家の名前にあると表示されます。

It's important when you're at the library to remember that you're supposed to be quiet.

図書館にいるときは、静かにすることを忘れないようにすることが大切です。

Shhhh! is something that we say in English to tell people that they're being too noisy.

「シーッ！」 は、英語で「うるさいよ」と言う言葉です。

So hopefully when you're at the library no one says, “Shhh!” to you.

だから、図書館で「シーッ！」と言われないことを祈ります。

But generally in a library it's supposed to be a quiet place where people can study or people can read.

でも一般的に図書館は、勉強したり本を読んだりする静かな場所であるはずです。

So try to keep it quiet.

だから静かにするようにしてください。

So often times a library will have a reading area where you can sit and read a book, or a magazine, or a newspaper.

図書館には、本や雑誌、新聞を読むことができる読書コーナーがあることが多いんです。

You don't always have to borrow a book to read it, you can go to the library,

本は必ず借りなければ読めないというわけではなく、図書館に行けばいいのです。

you can find a quiet place to sit and read, and you can read a book right at the library.

静かな場所で座って本を読むことができますし、図書館に行けばすぐに本を読むことができます。

If you're in a library at a University or College, they'll usually have a work area where you can study or do homework.

大学やカレッジの図書館であれば、通常、勉強や宿題をするためのワークスペースがあります。

It'll usually have a power outlet so you can plug in a laptop or charge your phone,

通常、電源コンセントがあるので、ノートパソコンを接続したり、携帯電話を充電したりすることができます。

but going to the library while you're at University or College can be a nice quiet place to get some homework done.

しかし、大学やカレッジにいる間に図書館に行けば、宿題をするのに静かでいい場所になります。
