  • What's up guys

  • I just wanted to make a new video today in order to be able to share with you a

  • New language learning technique that I've been working on

  • And I'm just kind of experimenting with this. This is a one of my language notebooks and

  • I've never really done this before I've used language notebooks a lot in the past, but I'm kind of experimenting with a new style

  • Because I've seen a few different youtubers

  • You know kind of showed that what they do in their language notebooks, so

  • I'm learning Romanian

  • I started learning Romanian about a year ago

  • kind of fell off the bandwagon

  • Got bored of it's not that I got bored. I just got too busy really

  • And now I'm going to Romania this summer, so I'm trying to get back into learning some

  • I know I'm not going to like become fluent in Romanian before the summer but

  • I don't know I feel like any time I go to a new country

  • I want to at least make some attempts to learn that language just

  • In order to be able to interact with the culture that much more and even if I just learned some very basic vocabulary

  • Very little bit of grammar some you know pre memorized phrases

  • I feel like I'll just get a lot more out of my experience while I'm there

  • So I'm pretty excited about that and I want to kind of get my butt back into gear and start

  • working on my Romanian Romanian again

  • So I started working on this Romanian

  • notebook and

  • In the past I've used you know I've used a lot of very

  • Different styles of notebooks to try to learn and this is just another experiment you know

  • I don't know exactly how this is gonna go and I feel like I have not

  • Refined my technique

  • perfectly yet, but I just want to share this with you guys and

  • Who knows maybe if you guys have done something similar you might be able to spit out some ideas

  • and we can bounce ideas off of each other and I might be able to refine my

  • Technique a little bit more with this, but my whole concept for this notebook

  • Was that I was not going to use any English words. I was only going to use picture because I want to be able to

  • When I went to look through this notebook

  • Not have to translate these words in my head

  • and I don't know if that's

  • You know I I don't really know how this is gonna

  • Go is just I'm just experimenting with this so the first page

  • I had near first several pages is just vocabulary words, and so you can probably tell just by looking at this but

  • My first page is colors, and I only picked a few of the main colors. I didn't want to

  • you know bog my memory down with turquoise and salmon and you know and

  • Magenta and all this stuff, so I have you know your usual black green

  • white red blue yellow and

  • Of course the word color because that's just as important as any of the actual colors

  • I'm trying to make the whole book kind of colorful to make it a little bit more

  • Make it pop a little bit more maybe

  • It'll help some of these words stick in my brain a little bit more than if they're just like written in

  • Just plain pencil or something

  • Obviously the color page had to be in color, but I tried to make the whole thing a little bit more colorful too. The next

  • Page that I have in here is picture of the human face with a few different words for

  • you know

  • Facial organs. I'm not the best artist

  • but

  • It's that's not really important

  • It's as long as you're able to understand. I'll probably do another

  • picture of human body too that can get like feet legs you know arms

  • torso

  • Well, probably not torso. That's not really as important of a word.

  • I have a few pages in here about a house so outside of the house we got

  • The door window roof. I put a few different types of rooms in here kitchen bedroom bed

  • Toilet that's gonna be important

  • I should probably... now that I think about it, I should probably also try to put a few like

  • Predetermined phrases in here as well like where is the restroom. You know

  • I can't think of any other phrases up the top of my head, but where is the restroom would be a really useful one.

  • Here I have some numbers and

  • I really wanted to do this like I said I wanted to do it without using English words

  • So I didn't want to translate so what I did here for numbers was I put

  • One, and I did that one time and then you know for each consecutive number

  • I just made one more so that I would be able to tell and I only did one to five because

  • At least for now I don't want to

  • You can usually get away

  • without using super complex numbers right?

  • I think it's better to keep things simple

  • Like if I really have to say 15 for whatever reason then I'll just say ten and five

  • But then so I have one through five down here then down here. I have ten

  • One hundred and a thousand

  • So I don't know we'll see how this works we'll see if this

  • actually, helps me remember those numbers anymore I

  • Have a few different adjectives in here. I'm still working on this notebook. So I'll probably add a few more

  • But we have big little we have a lot a few

  • Happy sad

  • You know I'll probably add good or bad or something like that but

  • couldn't really think of any way to draw that. So there is definitely one

  • Drawback to using pictures instead of

  • instead of English words

  • I got a few words in here about nature

  • sun, sky

  • Tree, grass, oh this is... so I'm... just like I said, I'm still working on this. This is a

  • This is vocabulary words from

  • a Romanian song that I like

  • So I haven't I

  • Haven't like actually drawn gone through and drawn... I don't know if I'm gonna draw pictures for these yet or not

  • I don't know. We'll see.

  • Some of them might be kind of hard to draw pictures of and I don't even remember

  • You know, I don't remember what most of these are right now

  • So I can't talk a whole lot about them, but... actually I don't know

  • I don't really know what I was going for here. Maybe I'll try to draw some pictures for each one of these and then

  • And

  • Use that to help learn the song. Either that or

  • I'll just I'll just listen to the song while looking at this page, and then think oh yeah, I remember that word

  • Yeah, I noticed that word. I noticed that word. I don't know. We'll see. Like I said this is an experiment

  • I don't know if it's necessarily gonna work great. On this next page, and I think this is my last one

  • Yeah in this next page. I started writing

  • Words that are specific to me. Words that actually might come up in my personal

  • conversations with Romanian people

  • and I talked about this a lot and in past videos so

  • the problem that I see with a lot of

  • Prefabricated

  • language courses language books

  • Duolingo courses all that kind of stuff is that they teach you a lot of words that are irrelevant to you

  • like you know

  • You're gonna... You'll probably in your language course... If you were to take a romanian course

  • At college.. if they have one at your university

  • They're probably not gonna teach you

  • everything

  • That's just specific to you. You'll do a section on

  • careers and jobs and stuff, and they'lll probably teach you lawyer,

  • doctor, teacher,

  • you know

  • a few these main ones, but if you're not a lawyer a doctor a teacher

  • you know if you're a

  • Photojournalist, you're not gonna learn that word

  • But this is a huge hole on your language learning because your job is a big part of who you are, right?

  • And that's stuff that's gonna come up in conversations, so I like to personalize my vocabulary lists.

  • I don't just learn the vocabulary that they teach you at school or in the book

  • I make my own lists, which is really what this whole thing is

  • Obviously, I'm at the very early stages of learning Romanian

  • So I have to learn some of these very

  • basic

  • Generic words, but I also want to learn things about myself. Learn how to say things about myself, so I have... you know

  • United States of America

  • One thing about me is I really like learning languages so here

  • I have the word for languages, and and then I have you know the words for French Spanish English

  • Esperanto I have...

  • I believe this says I want to learn Romanian so oh

  • And also another reason that I wanted to make this video is

  • if you happen to speak Romanian

  • And you're watching this, I would really appreciate if you

  • Noticed any errors. I have in this book like you know

  • I think this is the word for head and that's the word for a face. I just looked these all up on wordreference.com

  • But if I like got these backwards or if I you know if I used a word that might technically be the right term but

  • People don't really use it anymore or anything along those lines

  • Please let me know because I don't want to go to Romania and be using the wrong words all the time

  • Um so

  • Yeah, I guess you know um that's basically everything I have in this book so far. I was thinking about

  • You know maybe doing a few pages on like a few of the most common verbs

  • like maybe I'll draw a picture of a guy walking and then

  • I don't know. I don't know really how I would draw pictures of all the you can't draw pictures of all the different

  • verb conjugations and everything

  • But maybe I could do some charts or something in here and so yeah

  • I'm just kind of did to use this technique see if it works and

  • oh, another thing that I might be able to use this for is

  • You know while I'm actually in Romania

  • If I you know

  • Can't... if I can't remember a word now probably I'll bring this book with me you know

  • I'll just put it in my little bag my backpack or whatever wherever I go

  • If I want to say something and I can't remember a word

  • I think this is gonna be more useful than a dictionary in some ways because

  • If I read through this several times

  • I'm gonna remember all I might not remember all the

  • pronunciations of all the words in here

  • But I'm gonna remember all the words that at least are in the book and I'll remember where to find them

  • So you know if I if I think to myself oh gosh, I know that I have the word blue

  • in this notebook

  • But I just can't remember the word right now. I'll just pull it out and look

  • I know exactly where to go to find the word blue right or eyes or

  • Or anything like that

  • And I don't know how useful that'll be like when you're in a conversation

  • Normally you're not gonna stop your conversation to

  • Pull out a book and look up the definition of a word

  • And if you were to do anything you would like I would just like point to my eye

  • rather than using the word, you know rather than pulling this out and

  • Finding the exact word for eye. You know you can get away with a lot of sign language and stuff

  • So I don't know like if that will be a big factor and this or not

  • But at least I'll have that option if I want to. Because sometimes you know maybe it will help because sometimes

  • I want to prepare what I'm going to say before I enter into a conversation with someone so in that case you know

  • That's not taking time out of a conversation to look up a word in in my dictionary that is

  • Me preparing beforehand when I actually do have time to look up those words

  • So that might be useful and the other thing... the other problem, the issue that I foresee with using this is I

  • Like to I really like to use spaced repetition, and I like learning words and context

  • So I don't know for sure that just like just reading through this book unless I were to read through this every night

  • I don't know for sure that these are actually gonna help me

  • Memorize these words just by reading them

  • But maybe they will I mean I think it'll for sure help

  • But that might be more of supplement to my other memorization techniques

  • But either way like it didn't take me very long to

  • Draw it like I maybe spent 20 minutes

  • drawing all these pictures and everything so I think is at least a worthwhile experiment and

  • Like I said, this is an experiment so maybe I'll find a way to refine this technique a little bit more um

  • If you like I said if you guys have any suggestions be sure to let me know

  • If you guys have done anything like this that was really useful to you

  • Let me know and um worst case scenario if it's not a really useful technique then

  • Not a big deal, I just won't do it anymore, right?

  • and you know I've said this before but on this channel pretty much all of the advice that I give all the tips that I

  • give

  • Are given with that attitude

  • Right? I'm not here trying to tell you the right or wrong way to learn languages

  • I am very much on this journey as well

  • I'm trying to figure out still some of the best

  • Ways, but I'm never gonna learn

  • I'm never gonna find those best ways of learning languages unless I try new things so that's what I'm doing here

  • And so I guess that's all I really have for this video

  • Be sure to let me know if you have any any comments or anything to add

  • And if not then I'll see you guys next week, so thanks for watching the video

What's up guys
