As my job is to critique the world,

the shoddy systems and the people who refuse to do better,

私の役目は

as a writer, as a speaker, as a shady Nigerian --

世の中や いびつな社会構造や

(Laughter)

思考停止状態の人々を 批評することなので

I feel like my purpose is to be this cat.

作家で 講演者で 胡散臭いナイジェリア人の自分が

(Laughter)

（笑）

I am the person who is looking at other people,

目指しているのは この猫なんじゃないかと思います

like, "I need you to fix it."

（笑）

That is me.

「お前 何とかしろよ」という目で

I want us to leave this world better than we found it.

他人をジロッと見る人

And how I choose to effect change

それが私です

is by speaking up,

私たちがこの世を去る時には

by being the first and by being the domino.

生まれた時より 良い世界であってほしい

For a line of dominoes to fall,

変化を起こすために 私が選ぶ手段は

one has to fall first,

公の場で発言すること

which then leaves the other choiceless to do the same.

火付け役になり ドミノ倒しの駒になることです

And that domino that falls,

ドミノ倒しが起こるためには

we're hoping that, OK,

まず１つ目が倒れなければならず

the next person that sees this is inspired to be a domino.

そうすれば選択肢を持たない 他の駒も後に続くわけです

Being the domino, for me, looks like speaking up

最初に倒れる駒となる人は こう考えています

and doing the things that are really difficult,

「これを見た次の人が感化されて ドミノになってくれればいいな」

especially when they are needed,

私にとって 最初のドミノであるとは 声を大にして発言し

with the hope that others will follow suit.

必要とされる場合は特に

And here's the thing: I'm the person who says

本当に難しいことを やってのけることです

what you might be thinking but dared not to say.

他の人も続いて 行動してくれることを願って

A lot of times people think that we're fearless,

でも私みたいな人は

the people who do this, we're fearless.

人が心の中では思ってはいても あえて口にしないようなことを言うので

We're not fearless.

恐れを知らないタイプだと 見られることが多いのですが

We're not unafraid of the consequences

そんなことはありません

or the sacrifices that we have to make

権力に臆せず堂々と物を言うことで 起こりうる結果や

by speaking truth to power.

払うことになる犠牲に対して

What happens is, we feel like we have to,

恐れがないわけではありません

because there are too few people in the world

やるしかないと思って やっているのです

willing to be the domino,

世の中には 最初に倒れるドミノの駒に

too few people willing to take that fall.

進んでなろうという人が あまりにも少ないからです

We're not doing it without fear.

何も恐くないからではありません

Now, let's talk about fear.

では恐れについて話しましょう

I knew exactly what I wanted to be when I grew up.

私は子供の頃 大人になったら 絶対に

I was like, "I'm going to be a doctor!"

医者になると決めていて

Doctor Luvvie was the dream.

心の中で思い描いていました

I was Doc McStuffins before it was a thing.

おもちゃドクターの ドックは私がオリジナルです

(Laughter)

（笑）

And I remember when I went to college,

大学１年生の時のことですが

my freshman year, I had to take Chemistry 101

医学部進学課程での 履修科目に「化学入門」を

for my premed major.

取らなければならず

I got the first and last D of my academic career.

大学在籍中 最初で最後の Dをもらいました

(Laughter)

（笑）

So I went to my advisor, and I was like,

そこで進路相談に行って

"OK, let's drop the premed,

「医学部進学課程はやめます

because this doctor thing is not going to work,

医者になるなんて 到底無理ですから

because I don't even like hospitals.

そもそも病院自体嫌いですし

So ..."

だから…」

(Laughter)

（笑）

"Let's just consider that done for."

医学の道は諦めると言いました

And that same semester, I started blogging.

同じ学期中に ブログを書き始めました

That was 2003.

2003年のことです

So as that one dream was ending, another was beginning.

１つの夢が消えると同時に 別の夢が始まりつつありました

And then what was a cute hobby became my full-time job

趣味で楽しくやっていた執筆が フルタイムの仕事になったのは

when I lost my marketing job in 2010.

マーケティングの職を失った 2010年のことです

But it still took me two more years to say, "I'm a writer."

それでも 作家を名乗るようになったのは さらに２年経ってからです

Nine years after I had started writing, before I said, "I'm a writer,"

「作家」と自称するまでに 執筆を始めてから９年もかかったのは

because I was afraid of what happens

安定した給与を諦めたらどうなるか

without 401ks,

怖かったからです

without, "How am I going to keep up my shoe habit?

「大好きな靴を 買い集められなくなったら？」と

That's important to me."

（笑）

(Laughter)

そういうわけで 本当にやりたいことに 本腰を入れるまでに

So it took me that long to own this thing

９年もかかりました

that was what my purpose was.

そして気づいたのです

And then I realized,

「恐れ」には独特の作用があり

fear has a very concrete power

人をやりたいことから遠ざけ 信条に沿った発言を思いとどまらせるのだと

of keeping us from doing and saying the things that are our purpose.

そこで私は心に決めました

And I was like, "You know what?

「恐れなんかに 人生を支配されてたまるか

I'm not going to let fear rule my life.

やりたいことは 恐れずにやってやる」と

I'm not going to let fear dictate what I do."

すると いいことが次々に起こり

And then all of these awesome things started happening,

ドミノ倒しが始まったんです

and dominoes started to fall.

それに気づいた時

So when I realized that, I was like, "OK, 2015,

「よし 2015年は 30歳になったことだし

I turned 30,

『ともかくやってみる』年にしよう

it's going to be my year of 'Do it anyway.'

怖いと思うものは何でも 積極的に追求してみよう」

Anything that scares me, I'm going to actively pursue it."

私は山羊座なので

So, I'm a Capricorn.

足が地についた感覚が好きです

I like my feel solidly on the ground.

でも 生まれて初めて 一人旅に出ることにしたんです

I decided to take my first-ever solo vacation,

行き先は海外 ドミニカ共和国です

and it was out of the country to the Dominican Republic.

誕生日に何をしたかというと

So on my birthday, what did I do?

熱帯雨林をワイヤーに ぶら下がって進むツアー

I went ziplining through the forests of Punta Cana.

なぜか 服装はビジネスカジュアル 意味不明ですね

And for some odd reason, I had on business casual.

（笑）

Don't ask why.

それはもう楽しかったです

(Laughter)

あと私 水に潜るのは 嫌いなんです

And I had an incredible time.

やっぱり 足を地に 着けてたいんで

Also, I don't like being submerged in water.

そこで メキシコに行って イルカと一緒に水中を泳ぎました

I like to be, again, on solid ground.

同じ年に 自分にとって 「山」にあたることを

So I went to Mexico and swam with dolphins underwater.

やり遂げました

And then the cool thing that I did also that year

著書を出したんです

that was my mountain

『I'm Judging You: The Do-Better Manual （辛口の私が教える改善マニュアル）』です

was I wrote my book,

そしたら今度は

"I'm Judging You: The Do-Better Manual,"

（拍手）

And I had to own --

執筆が本業になっちゃいました

(Applause)

執筆が本業になっちゃいました

that whole writing thing now, right?

その年に もう１つ 普段の自分とまさに正反対のこと—

Yes.

本当にビビりまくったんですが—

But the very anti-me thing that I did that year

スカイダイビングに挑戦しました

that scared the crap out of me --

飛び降りようという時になって

I went skydiving.

「また人生の選択を誤った」と思いました

We're about to fall out of the plane.

（笑）

I was like, "I've done some stupid things in life. This is one of them."

落下しながら 迫りくる地表を見て

(Laughter)

それこそ呼吸するのも忘れて 頭の中では

And then we come falling down to Earth,

「故障もしてない飛行機から 自ら飛び降りるなんて」

and I literally lose my breath as I see Earth, and I was like,

（笑）

"I just fell out of a perfectly good plane on purpose."

「何考えてるんだ私は」

(Laughter)

でも眼下に広がる光景の美しさに

"What is wrong with me?!"

「これは人生最高の経験だ

But then I looked down at the beauty,

やってみて本当に良かった」 と思いました

and I was like, "This is the best thing I could have done.

私が真実を語るはめになる時というのは

This was an amazing decision."

あの飛行機から 落ちる時の気分に似ています

And I think about the times when I have to speak truth.

開いたハッチの 端にいる時の気分です

It feels like I am falling out of that plane.

「こんなことできない」 と思うけれど

It feels like that moment when I'm at the edge of the plane,

結局は やらなきゃいけないから やるんです

and I'm like, "You shouldn't do this,"

ハッチに座って

but then I do it anyway, because I realize I have to.

飛行機に留まっている間は 心地いいんです

Sitting at the edge of that plane

毎日 自分よりも力のある 機関や人々に対し

and kind of staying on that plane is comfort to me.

そして自分より強大な 権力に対して

And I feel like every day that I'm speaking truth

真実を語る時は

against institutions and people who are bigger than me

飛行機から落ちるような気分です

and just forces that are more powerful than me,

でも 「心地良さ」は 過大評価されています

I feel like I'm falling out of that plane.

何も言わない状態というのは 心地良いからです

But I realize comfort is overrated.

従来のやり方を継続するのは 心地良いのです

Because being quiet is comfortable.

でも 心地良さは 現状維持しかもたらしません

Keeping things the way they've been is comfortable.

ですから 必要な時に 不都合な真実を語ることで

And all comfort has done is maintain the status quo.

心地の悪さを 心地良く感じるべきなんです

So we've got to get comfortable with being uncomfortable

私は—

by speaking these hard truths when they're necessary.

（拍手）

And I --

でも 私の場合 真実を語らなきゃ という義務感があります

(Applause)

私にとって誠実さは 本当に重要で

And for me, though, I realize that I have to speak these truths,

誠意を貫くことを 大事にしているからです

because honesty is so important to me.

正義というものは 任意ではなく

My integrity is something I hold dear.

必須であるべきです

Justice -- I don't think justice should be an option.

あと シアバターもすごく 大事だと思っています

We should always have justice.

（笑）

Also, I believe in shea butter as a core value, and --

私たちの肌がもっと潤えば 世界は良くなるはずです

(Laughter)

それはそうと こういう価値観が中心にあるので

and I think the world would be better if we were more moisturized.

私にとって真実を語ることは義務であり 選択の余地はありません

But besides that, with these as my core values,

でも私のような プロのトラブルメーカーばかりが

I have to speak the truth.

ドミノ役を果たそうと心がけ

I have no other choice in the matter.

常に飛行機から飛び降りたり

But people like me, the professional troublemakers,

最初に倒れる駒になったり すべきではありません

should not be the only ones who are committed to being these dominoes

みんな 短期的な結果を恐れるあまり 気づかないんです

who are always falling out of planes

しばしば 自分がその部屋の中で

or being the first one to take this hit.

最大の力を持つ人たちの 一人であるということに

People are so afraid of these acute consequences,

２番目か３番目かもしれません

not realizing that there are many times when we walk in rooms

私みたいな人の役目は そういう時に

and we are some of the most powerful people in those rooms --

現状を揺り動かすことだと 強く信じています

we might be the second-most powerful, third-most powerful.

だから 最大の力は 持っていないとしても

And I firmly believe that our job in those times

他の人と手を組めば

is to disrupt what is happening.

持てる力が増大します

And then if we're not the most powerful,

会議で言葉が出てこない女性を

if two more of us band together,

サポートしてあげたり

it makes us powerful.

うまく意見を言えない人の言葉も 確実に伝わるよう

It's like cosigning the woman in the meeting,

気を配ったりすること

you know, the woman who can't seem to get her word out,

そんな余地があるように努める という役割です

or just making sure that other person who can't make a point

みんなの幸せは 社会の責任です

is being heard.

それを念頭に置けば 理解できるはずです

Our job is to make sure they have room for that.

各々が誰か他の人の

Everyone's well-being is community business.

助けになるように努めていれば

If we made that a point, we're understand that,

自分が助けを求める時に 苦労しないはずだと

for the times when we need help,

私は時に 自分が

we wouldn't have to look around so hard

衆目の中でつまずき 転んできたように感じます

if we made sure we were somebody else's help.

例えば ある国際会議での スピーチを依頼された時

And there are times when I feel like

交通費は自己負担と言われ

I have taken very public tumbles and falls,

調べてみたら

like the time when I was asked to speak at a conference,

白人男性の講演者たちには 講演料が支払われ

and they wanted me to pay my way there.

交通費も支給され

And then I did some research

白人女性の講演者たちには 交通費が支給され

and found out the white men who spoke there got compensated

黒人女性の講演者は 自己負担だと判明しました

and got their travel paid for.

どうしようか迷いました

The white women who spoke there got their travel paid for.

このことを表沙汰にすれば

The black women who spoke there were expected to actually pay to speak there.

金銭的に打撃を受けかねません

And I was like, "What do I do?"

でも 黙っていたところで 誰の役にも立たないと思い

And I knew that if I spoke up about this publicly,

おそるおそる このことを公にしたところ

I could face financial loss.

他にも声を上げる女性が 出てきたのです

But then I also understood that my silence serves no one.

「私も同じような 報酬格差を経験した」と

So I fearfully spoke up about it publicly,

そして その国際会議での 差別的な報酬体系の実態が

and other women started coming out to talk about,

語られ始めたのでした

"I, too, have faced this type of pay inequality."

ドミノ倒しの最初の駒に なった気がしたのは

And it started a conversation about discriminatory pay practices

有名人が書いた 不快な内容の回顧録を読んで

that this conference was participating in.

それをネタにした時のこと

I felt like I was the domino

影響力では負けてるから キャリアに響くかもしれない

the time I read a disturbing memoir by a public figure

「でも やらなきゃ

and wrote a piece about it.

飛行機のハッチに座ろう」と ２時間ほど考えた後に

I knew this person was more powerful than me and could impact my career,

「投稿」をクリックして逃げました

but I was like, "I've got to do this.

（笑）

I've got to sit at the edge of this plane, maybe for two hours."

戻ってきたら 爆発的に拡散していて

And I did. And I pressed "Publish," and I ran away.

「ついに言ってくれる人が現れた」と みんな喜んでいました

(Laughter)

それがきっかけで

And I came back to a viral post

精神衛生やセルフケアが 話題に上るようになり

and people being like, "Oh my God, I'm so glad somebody finally said this."

「そうか これでいいのか

And it started a conversation

私がしていることも 何かの 役に立っているのかも」と思いました

about mental health and self-care,

その後 本当にたくさんの人が ドミノ倒しの起点になり

and I was like, "OK. Alright.

影響力を持つ男性に暴行を受けた 経験について発言しました

This thing that I'm doing, I guess, alright, it's doing something."

その影響で何百万という女性たちが 「Me too」と声を上げました

And then so many people have been the domino

#MeToo運動に火をつけた タラナ・バークに拍手！

when they talk about how they've been assaulted by powerful men.

（拍手）

And it's made millions of women join in and say, "Me Too."

体制側が私たち民衆を 現状に留めておけるのは

So, a shout-out to Tarana Burke for igniting that movement.

私たちの沈黙あってこそなのです

(Applause)

ドミノ倒しを始めるとは つまるところ

People and systems count on our silence to keep us exactly where we are.

ありのままの自分を 保つことでもあります

Now, being the domino sometimes comes down to being exactly who you are.

私の胡散臭さは ３歳の時から変わっていません

So, I've been a shady somebody since I was three.

（笑）

(Laughter)

３歳の誕生日での写真です

This is me on my third birthday.

私はこの時からずっと 変わっていませんが

But I've been this girl all my life,

それもドミノの駒としての 一要素に感じます

and I feel like even that's been the domino,

誰もが平均的な人間として

because in a world that wants us to walk around

振る舞うように期待される社会では

as representatives of ourselves,

ありのままの自分でいるのは 「型破り」でもあります

being yourself can be a revolutionary act.

大きな声でものが言えない社会で

And in a world that wants us to whisper,

私はあえて声を張り上げます

I choose to yell.

（拍手）

言いにくいことを言おうという時

When it's time to say these hard things,

私は自分に３つの質問をしています

I ask myself three things.

１つめ「本気でそう思うのか」

One: Did you mean it?

２つめ「根拠はあるのか」

Two: Can you defend it?

３つめ「愛を込めて言っているか」

Three: Did you say it with love?

答えが全て「イエス」なら

If the answer is yes to all three,

発言して 後は流れに任せます

I say it and let the chips fall.

これが大事なんです

That's important.

こうして自己チェックをすると

That checkpoint with myself

いつも答えは 「そうだ やるべきだよ」です

always tells me, "Yes, you're supposed to do this."

思慮深く真実を語ることが

Telling the truth -- telling thoughtful truths --

「型破り」とされるのは おかしいと思います

should not be a revolutionary act.

権力にも怯まない発言は 残念ながら 捨て身の行為というのが現状です

Speaking truths to power should not be sacrificial, but they are.

これを もっと多くの人が みんなのために行えば

But I think if more of us chose to do this for the greater good,

世界は今よりもっと 良くなるでしょう

we'd be in better spaces than we are right now.

みんなのため と言えば

Speaking of the greater good,

私たちが真実を言うよう 心がけているのは

I think we commit ourselves to telling truths to build bridges

人間同士の共通基盤への 橋渡しをするためです

to common ground,

真実を土台にしていない橋は 崩れてしまうでしょう

and bridges that aren't based on truth will collapse.
