We always have to leave behind all our possessions.

But not our skills and knowledge.

If allowed to live a productive life,

and contribute to the development of their host country.

I was born in the city called Bukavu,

迎え入れてくれた国の発展に 貢献できるのです

South Kivu,

私はブカヴという都市で生まれました

in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

南キヴ州の州都で

I am the fifth-born in a family of 12 children.

コンゴ民主共和国にあります

My father, a mechanic by profession,

私は12人の兄弟姉妹の 第５子として生まれました

worked very hard to send me to school.

私の父の仕事は自動車整備士でしたが

Just like other young people,

私を学校に通わすために懸命に働きました

I had a lot of plans and dreams.

他の若者と同様に

I wanted to complete my studies,

私もたくさんの計画や夢を持っていました

get a nice job,

学業を修了し

marry and have my own children

良い仕事に就き

and support my family.

結婚して子供を授かり 家族を支えるー

But this didn't happen.

そうなりたいと思っていました

War in my homeland forced me to flee to Uganda in 2008,

でもそうはなりませんでした

nine years ago.

９年前の2008年に 母国で勃発した戦争によりウガンダに

My family joined a steady exodus of refugees

脱出せざるを得ませんでした

who settled in Uganda's capital, Kampala.

私たち家族も ウガンダの首都 カンパラに定住しようとする—

In my country,

延々と続く 難民の列に加わりました

I lived already in the city,

and we felt Kampala was much better than a refugee camp.

都市に住んでいましたので

Refugees in the cities

カンパラの方が難民キャンプより 良いと感じました

have always been denied international assistance,

even after their recognition by UNHCR in 1997.

In addition to the poverty problem we were confronted with

as the local urban poor,

we were facing challenges due to our refugee status,

such as a language barrier.

In Congo, the official language is French.

その一つが言葉の壁です

But in Uganda, it is English.

コンゴでは公用語はフランス語でしたが

We didn't have access to education and health.

ウガンダでは英語です

We were exposed to harassment,

教育や医療は 難民には 手の届かないものでした

exploitation, intimidation and discrimination.

私たちは 嫌がらせ、搾取、脅迫

Humanitarian organizations mostly focused

差別などにさらされました

on the formal settlement in rural areas,

人道支援団体は多くの場合

and there was nothing in place for us.

難民が農村部で 公式に 定住することには目を向けても

But we didn't want handouts.

都市部の難民には何もしませんでした

We wanted to work and support ourselves.

ただ 私たちは支援物資を 求めてはいませんでした

I joined my other two colleagues in exile

私たちは働いて自立したかったのです

and set up an organization to support other refugees.

YARID -- Young African Refugees for Integral Development --

began as a conversation within the Congolese community.

how they could organize themselves to solve these challenges.

The YARID programs for support evolve in stages,

progressing from soccer community, to English language

to sewing livelihoods.

The soccer changed the energy

of unemployed youth

and connected people from different communities.

The free English classes

無償の英語教室では

help empower people to engage with the Ugandan community,

難民に ウガンダ人コミュニティーと 関わっていく力を与え

allowing them to get to know their neighbors and sell wares.

近隣の人々と知り合いになり 日用品を販売できるようになりました

The vocational training program offers livelihood skills,

職業訓練プログラムが 生計維持のスキルを提供し

and with them, important opportunities for economic self-reliance.

そのスキルが 経済的な自立に向けた 大きなチャンスを提供します

We've seen so many families

私達は自力生活が可能となった

become self-sustaining.

家族を多く見てきました

We've seen who no longer needs our help.

私達の支援を必要としなくなった人々も 見てきました

As YARID's programs have expanded,

YARIDプログラムが広がるにつれて

it has included an increasing range of nationalities --

対象となる人々の国籍は増え続けています

Congolese, Rwandan, Burundian,

Somalis, Ethiopian, South Sudanese.

Today, YARID has supported over 3,000 refugees across Kampala

現在 YARIDではカンパラ市全域の 3,000人を超える難民を支援し

and continues supporting more.

They need to be internationally recognized and supported.
