Once upon a time, not long ago,

そう遠くない昔の話です

I was sitting in a restaurant with my friend, ordering food.

友人とレストランに座って 食事を注文しようという時です

So I looked at the waiter and said,

私はウェイターを見上げて こう言いました

"Do you have a menu (Arabic)?"

「メニュー（アラビア語）はありますか？」

He looked at me strangely, thinking that he misheard.

ウェイターは私を訝しげに見返すと 聞き間違えたと思ったのか

He said, "Sorry? (English)."

「はい？（英語）」と言いました

I said, "The menu (Arabic), please."

「メニュー（アラビア語）をください」 と私が言うと

He replied, "Don't you know what they call it?"

「それを何と呼ぶか 知らないんですか？」

"I do."

「知っています」と私

He said, "No! It's called "menu" (English), or "menu" (French)."

彼は「違いますよ！メニュー（英語）や メニュー（フランス語）でしょう」と

Is the French pronunciation correct?

フランス語の発音は合っていましたか？

"Come, come, take care of this one!" said the waiter.

「誰か このお客さんの面倒を 見てやってくれ」と

He was disgusted when talking to me, as if he was saying to himself,

そして嫌々ながら まるで独り言のように

"If this was the last girl on Earth, I wouldn't look at her!"

「彼女が地球にいる最後の女の子だとしても 見たくもない！」と

What's the meaning of saying "menu" in Arabic?

アラビア語で「メニュー」と言うことは 何を指していますか？

Two words made a Lebanese young man judge a girl as being backward

たった一言で レバノン人の若者は 私が時代遅れで

and ignorant.

無教養だと判断したのです

How could she speak that way?

「何で あんな話し方をするんだろう？」と

At that moment, I started thinking.

まさに この時でした

It made me mad.

私は怒り心頭に発し

It definitely hurts!

本当に傷ついたのです！

I'm denied the right to speak my own language in my own country?

自分の国で 母語を話す権利を 否定されたんですよ？

Where could this happen?

こんなことが起こりうるんでしょうか？

How did we get here?

なぜ こうなったのでしょうか？

Well, while we are here, there are many people like me,

私と同じように多くの人々が

who would reach a stage in their lives, where they involuntarily give up

人生のある時点で 不本意ながらも

everything that has happened to them in the past,

過去に起きたことを 全て諦めることで

just so they can say that they're modern

近代的で文化的な自分を

and civilized.

手に入れたと思うでしょう

Should I forget all my culture, thoughts,

私もそうすべきでしょうか？ 自分の文化や考え方

intellect and all my memories?

知識 そして全ての記憶を 忘れ去るべきでしょうか？

Childhood stories might be the best memories we have of the war!

子供時代は最高の思い出でしょうが 私たちの記憶は戦争です！

Should I forget everything I learned in Arabic, just to conform?

周りと同調するために アラビア語で覚えたものを 忘れるべきなんでしょうか？

To be one of them?

彼らに同化するために？

Where's the logic in that?

それにロジックはあるのでしょうか？

Despite all that, I tried to understand him.

こんな風に憤った私ですが 彼を理解しようと努めました

I didn't want to judge him with the same cruelty that he judged me.

あの時 批判されたのと同じ残酷さで 彼を判断したくなかったからです

The Arabic language doesn't satisfy today's needs.

アラビア語はこんにちのニーズを 満たしていません

It's not a language for science,

科学や研究においては

research,

使われませんし

a language we're used to in universities,

大学でも

a language we use in the workplace,

職場でも使いません

a language we rely on if we were to perform an advanced research project,

高度な研究プロジェクトに 従事する時も使いません

and it definitely isn't a language we use at the airport.

空港で使われる言葉では 決してありません

If we did so, they'd strip us of our clothes.

そんなことが起きれば セキュリティーに捕まります

Where can I use it, then? We could all ask this question!

では どこで使えるのでしょう？ 皆さん 興味ありますよね！

So, you want us to use Arabic. Where are we to do so?

アラビア語を使うといっても どこで使えというのでしょう？

This is one reality.

これが１つの現状です

But we have another more important reality that we ought to think about.

そして もう１つ考察すべき より重要な現実があります

Arabic is the mother tongue.

アラビア語は母語として話されます

Research says that mastery of other languages

研究者によると他言語の習得には

demands mastery of the mother tongue.

母語をマスターすることが 必須だそうです

Mastery of the mother tongue is a prerequisite for creative expression in other languages.

母語に精通していることが 他言語で 創造的表現をする際の前提条件なのです

How?

例を挙げてみます

Gibran Khalil Gibran,

ハリール・ジブラーンが

when he first started writing, he used Arabic.

最初に詩を書き始めた時 アラビア語を用いました

All his ideas, imagination and philosophy

彼のアイデア 想像力 哲学の全ては

were inspired by this little boy in the village

村で育った少年だった 彼自身から

where he grew up, smelling a specific smell,

湧き出たものです 独特の香りを嗅ぎ―

hearing a specific voice,

独特の声を聞いて―

and thinking a specific thought.

独特の考え方で育ちました

So, when he started writing in English, he had enough baggage.

ですから英語で詩を書き始めた時 すでに沢山の引き出しがあったわけです

Even when he wrote in English,

彼が英語で書いた詩も

when you read his writings in English, you smell the same smell,

皆さんに読んでいただければ 同じ香りが漂い

sense the same feeling.

同じ気持ちを汲み取れるはずです

You can imagine that that's him writing in English,

英語で書き記したのは 彼自身であることが伝わります

the same boy who came from the mountain. From a village on Mount Lebanon.

山で育った少年― レバノン山岳から来た少年を感じ取れるでしょう

So, this is an example no one can argue with.

これは火を見るよりも明らかな例ですね

Second, it's often said that if you want to kill a nation,

次に よく言われることですが ある国を消滅させる

the only way to kill a nation,

唯一の方法はその国の言葉を

is to kill its language.

滅ぼしてしまうことだそうです

This is a reality that developed societies are aware of.

先進国が心得ている事実です

The Germans, French, Japanese and Chinese, all these nations are aware of this.

ドイツ人 フランス人 日本人 中国人は分かっています

That's why they legislate to protect their language.

ですから彼らは自分たちの言語を 法の下で守っています

They make it sacred.

神聖化しているのです

That's why they use it in production, they pay a lot of money to develop it.

このため 彼らは言語を生産に用い その発展に膨大なお金を投じます

Do we know better than them?

それに比べて私たちはどうでしょうか

All right,

そうですね

we aren't from the developed world,

私たちは先進国ではないし

this advanced thinking hasn't reached us yet,

こんな高度な考えは ここには まだないですが

and we would like to catch up with the civilized world.

私たちは文明世界に 追いつきたいと願っています

Countries that were once like us, but decided to strive for development,

かつて私たちと同様であった国々は 発展という名のもと

do research,

研究を行い

and catch up with those countries,

今や先進国に追いついています

such as Turkey, Malaysia and others,

トルコやマレーシアなどは

they carried their language with them as they were climbing the ladder,

発展という梯子を登る時 言語を手放しませんでした

protected it like a diamond.

ダイアモンドのように大切に守り

They kept it close to them.

身近に置いておいたのです

Because if you get any product from Turkey or elsewhere

トルコや別の場所から 商品を購入する際に

and it's not labeled in Turkish,

トルコ語のラベルがなければ

then it isn't a local product.

現地の商品とは言えません

You wouldn't believe it's a local product.

現地の商品という信頼がおけないのです

They'd go back to being consumers,

消費者というものは

clueless consumers, like we are most of the time.

単純なものです 私たちもそうですよね

So, in order for them to innovate and produce, they had to protect their language.

商品を開発・生産するには 自国の言語を守る必要があるのです

If I say, "Freedom, sovereignty, independence (Arabic),"

もし私が「自由 国民主権 独立を （アラビア語）」と叫べば

what does this remind you of?

皆さんは何を想起しますか？

It doesn't ring a bell, does it?

何も思い出しませんか？

Regardless of the who, how and why.

誰の言葉とか どんな場面で 何で言ったのかは分かりませんよね

Language isn't just for conversing, just words coming out of our mouths.

言語とは ただ口から発せられる 会話のための手段ではありません

Language represents specific stages in our lives,

言語とは 私たちが歩んできた 特定の背景を表すものであり

and terminology that is linked to our emotions.

私たちの感情と繋がっているのです

So when we say, "Freedom, sovereignty, independence,"

私たちが「自由 国民主権 独立を」と聞くと

each one of you draws a specific image in their own mind,

皆さん １人ひとりが 違ったイメージを持つのではないでしょうか

there are specific feelings

特別な日や ある歴史的な時代の

of a specific day in a specific historical period.

特別な感情を思い起こす場合もあるでしょう

Language isn't one, two or three words or letters put together.

言語とは 単なる言葉や文字の 集合体ではありません

It's an idea inside that relates to how we think,

私たちの思考や 他者との関わりに根付いた

and how we see each other and how others see us.

内なるアイデアを 表現したものなのです

What is our intellect?

では私たちの知性はどうでしょう？

How do you say whether this guy understands or not?

自分を理解してもらえたか どうやって分かりますか？

So, if I say, "Freedom, sovereignty, independence (English),"

私が「自由 国民主権 独立を （英語）」と言うのと

or if your son came up to you and said,

皆さんの息子が近寄ってきて

"Dad, have you lived through the period of the freedom (English) slogan?"

「お父さんは自由（英語）のスローガンの 時代を生き延びたの？」と聞くのは

How would you feel?

違う思いを抱きますよね？

If you don't see a problem,

もし皆さんがこの問題に 気付かないようでしたら

then I'd better leave, and stop talking in vain.

ここで終わりにして 無駄なおしゃべりはやめます

The idea is that these expressions remind us of a specific thing.

こうした表現はある特定のものを 想起させると言いたいのです

I have a francophone friend who's married to a French man.

フランス人男性と結婚した フランス語を話す友人がいるのですが

I asked her once how things were going.

彼女に結婚生活について聞いてみると

She said, "Everything is fine,

その返事は

but once, I spent a whole night asking and trying to translate

「問題ないわよ でも一度だけ 夜を徹して

the meaning of the word 'toqborni' for him."

彼に“toqborni”の意味を訳したの」

(Laughter)

（笑）

(Applause)

The poor woman had mistakenly told him "toqborni,"

かわいそうな友人は “toqborni”を口にしてしまったため

and then spent the whole night trying to explain it to him.

夜を徹して旦那さんに 説明するはめになったのです

He was puzzled by the thought: "How could anyone be this cruel?

彼は さぞ当惑したでしょう 「何て残酷な話なんだ

Does she want to commit suicide?

彼女は自殺したいのか？

'Bury me?' (English)"

私を埋めて（英語）だって？」

This is one of the few examples.

これは一例ですが

It made us feel that she's unable to tell that word to her husband,

旦那さんが理解できないような言葉は

since he won't understand,

もう口にできなくなるように思えますよね

and he's right not to; his way of thinking is different.

事実 彼の考え方は異なるのですから

She said to me, "He listens to Fairuz with me,

彼女は「彼とファイルーズを聴いていて

and one night, I tried to translate for him

ある晩 彼に訳してあげようとしたの

so he can feel what I feel when I listen to Fairuz."

ファイルーズを聴いたときの気持ちを 彼にも理解してもらいたくて」

The poor woman tried to translate this for him:

かわいそうな友人は またも翻訳を試みました

"From them I extended my hands and stole you --"

「私は腕を広げて 彼らから あなたを奪いたもう・・・」

(Laughter)

（笑）

And here's the pickle:

ここからが傑作です

"And because you belong to them, I returned my hands and left you."

「あなたは彼らのものだから 私は手を離し あなたのもとを去ります」

(Laughter)

（笑）

Translate that for me.

この辺で止めましょう

(Applause)

So, what have we done to protect the Arabic language?

私たちはアラビア語を守るために 何をしてきたでしょうか？

We turned this into a concern of the civil society,

私たちは市民社会の問題として提起し

and we launched a campaign to preserve the Arabic language.

アラビア語を保護する キャンペーンも立ち上げました

Even though many people told me, "Why do you bother?

多くの人から 「何でそんなことを気にするの？

Forget about this headache and go have fun."

こんな頭痛の種は忘れて 人生楽しもうよ」と言われました

No problem!

皆さんはそれでも結構です！

The campaign to preserve Arabic launched a slogan that says,

アラビア語を保護する キャンペーンのスローガンとは

"I talk to you from the East, but you reply from the West."

「私が東から語りかけても あなたは西から返事をする」です

We didn't say, "No! We do not accept this or that."

私たちが避けたのは「あれは容認できない！」 といった強い口調です

We didn't adopt this style because that way, we wouldn't be understood.

このスタイルを避けた理由は こんな態度では誰にも理解されないからです

And when someone talks to me that way, I hate the Arabic language.

他人から強い口調で話しかけられると アラビア語が大嫌いになります

We say--

私たちは―

(Applause)

（拍手）

We want to change our reality,

現状を変えて

and be convinced in a way that reflects our dreams, aspirations and day-to-day life.

私たちの夢や憧れを 日々の生活に感じ取りたいのです

In a way that dresses like us and thinks like we do.

それは身のこなしや考え方に 反映されるでしょう

So, "I talk to you from the East, but you reply from the West"

ですから「私が東から語りかけても あなたは西から返事をする」は

has hit the spot.

まさに的を射ているんです

Something very easy, yet creative and persuasive.

とても簡素でありながら クリエイティブで説得力があります

After that, we launched another campaign

その後 私たちは別のキャンペーンも 立ち上げました

with scenes of letters on the ground.

文字を地面に散らばらせるというもので

You've seen an example of it outside,

皆さんも会場の外で ご覧いただいたでしょうか

a scene of a letter surrounded by black and yellow tape

黒と黄色のテープに囲まれた 文字です

with "Don't kill your language!" written on it.

「自分の言語を殺さないで！」と 書いてあります

Why? Seriously, don't kill your language.

なぜかって？ 皆さんの言語を殺してはいけません

We really shouldn't kill our language.

本当に自分の言語を殺してはいけないのです

If we were to kill the language, we'd have to find an identity.

もし言葉を殺してしまえば アイデンティティーを探す必要があり

We'd have to find an existence.

私たちの存在を見出すために

We'd go back to the beginning.

また振り出しに戻らなければいけません

This is beyond just missing our chance of being modern and civilized.

そうすれば近代化や文明化の機会を失うだけでは すまされない事態を招きます

After that we released photos of guys and girls wearing the Arabic letter.

アラビア語の文字をまとった 子供達の写真を公開した時のことです

Photos of "cool" guys and girls.

「クール」な男の子と女の子達の写真です

We are very cool!

私たちって本当にクール（かっこいい）！

And to whoever might say, "Ha! You used an English word!"

「クールなんて英語じゃないか！」と 言われるかもしれません

I say, "No! I adopt the word 'cool.'"

私の返事はこうです「違います！ “cool”という単語を取り入れただけです」

Let them object however they want, but give me a word that's nicer

異議を唱えたい人は言わせておきましょう でも 私は ―

and matches the reality better.

より良い言葉 現状に沿う言葉を使います

I will keep on saying "Internet"

私は“Internet”という言葉を使い続けます

I wouldn't say: "I'm going to the world wide web"

「ワールドワイドウェブを使う」なんて 言うつもりはありません

(Laughs)

Because it doesn't fit! We shouldn't kid ourselves.

だってふさわしくないでしょう！ 変に固執することも避けるべきです

But to reach this point, we all have to be convinced

ここまでで皆さんに お分かりいただけましたでしょうか

that we shouldn't allow anyone who is bigger

権力があると思っている人達が 言語について

or thinks they have any authority over us when it comes to language,

彼らの思い通りに私たちを操って

to control us or make us think and feel what they want.

丸め込もうとすることを 阻止する必要があります

Creativity is the idea.

創造力とはアイデアです

So, if we can't reach space or build a rocket and so on,

もし宇宙に行ったり ロケットを作ったりできないなら

we can be creative.

クリエイティブになりましょう

At this moment, every one of you is a creative project.

まさにこの瞬間 皆さん１人ひとりが クリエイティブ・プロジェクトなのです

Creativity in your mother tongue is the path.

創造力には 私たちの母語が 鍵となります

Let's start from this moment.

ここから始めましょう

Let's write a novel or produce a short film.

小説を書いたり ショートフィルムを制作しましょう

A single novel could make us global again.

たった１冊の小説が 私たちを再び広い世界に誘います

It could bring the Arabic language back to being number one.

アラビア語が世界の第１言語に 返り咲くことができるかもしれません

So, it's not true that there's no solution; there is a solution!

ですから解決法が無いわけではないのです！

But we have to know that, and be convinced that a solution exists,

私たちは解決法があることを 理解し 信じる必要があります

that we have a duty to be part of that solution.

そして１人ひとりが その解決に寄与するのです

In conclusion, what can you do today?

では皆さんは この後 何ができますか？

either Arabic, English, French or Chinese.

But don't write Arabic with Latin characters mixed with numbers!

アラビア語にラテン文字と数字を 混ぜるのはやめて下さい！

It's a disaster! That's not a language.

You'd be entering a virtual world with a virtual language.

仮想世界の言葉を使えば 仮想世界に足を踏み入れてしまいます

It's not easy to come back from such a place and rise.

そんな場所に一度入れば 戻ってくるのは難しいでしょう

That's the first thing we can do.

これが私たちが最初にできることです

Second, there are many other things that we can do.

２つ目に 私たちができることは 他にも山ほどありますが

We're not here today to convince each other.

それを確認するのは ここでの議論ではありません

We're here to bring attention to the necessity of preserving this language.

Now I will tell you a secret.

A baby first identifies its father

赤ちゃんが最初に父親を認識するのは

When my daughter is born, I'll tell her, "This is your father, honey (Arabic)."

私の娘が生まれたら こう言います 「これが貴方のお父さんよ､ハニー（アラビア語）」

I wouldn't say, "This is your dad, honey (English)."

「これが貴方のお父さんよ､ハニー（英語）」なんて 言いません

And in the supermarket, I promise my daughter Noor,

スーパーマーケットで 娘のノアが

that if she says to me, "Thanks (Arabic),"

「ありがとう（アラビア語）」と言っても

I won't say, "Dis, 'Merci, Maman,'" and hope no one has heard her.

こっそり「メルシーママンとお言い」なんて 絶対に言いません
