Japanese take too much time to answer messages.

日本人は、メッセージの返信がすごく遅いです。

Talking online with Japanese people is difficult.

オンラインで日本人と喋るのは大変です。

They could take 10 days or 5 days.

彼らの返信に五日から十日もかかるんです。

It's way too much.

長すぎですよ。

Do you mean they spend a lot of time online or it takes a lot of time for a reply.

それは日本人のオンライン時間が長いの？ それとも返信に時間がかかり過ぎてるの？

To reply, yes.

返信にかかる時間です！

I am really quick to answer and sometimes I have to wait two days.

私はいつもすぐ返事するんですが、 時々返信を待つのに二日もかかります。

Even if it's a friend... I don't know why.

例えそれが友達であってもそうなんです、 なんでなのかが分かりません。

I see a lot of people, especially men wearing suits.

あと、沢山の人がスーツを着てる、特に男性！

Where I am from you see almost no one in suits.

私の国ではスーツを着る人をほぼ見たことないです。

Quite a lot of salary men wear suits.

沢山のサラリーマンがスーツを着てるね。

There are rules as well, when you are allowed to wear just the shirt

そういったルールもあるんです。 スーツじゃなくてシャツだけを着る時とか！

in summer or when you have to wear the blazer.

夏にはブレザーコートを着たりもします。

We actually went to the robot show restaurant.

実は、ロボットショーのレストランに行ったんです。

Nothing I have ever seen before and definitely not like back at home.

今まで見た事のないものばかりで、 私たちの国とは全く違いますね。

Very fun, loud, bright. Fun time.

すごく面白くて、賑やかで、明るくて。 そんな楽しい時間でした。

And the Tokyo Tower we saw at sunrise and that was beautiful

東京タワーで見た日の出もすごく美しかった。

That was the first thing we saw when we got off the plane.

飛行機降りてから、初めての景色でした。

What is the thing that you can't find back home.

We do NOT have a robot show back home.

私たちの国には絶対ロボットショーなんてないです。

Such a fun place. We had sushi for breakfast.

すごく楽しい所です。 朝ごはんに寿司を食べました。

Everybody has been friendly, just walking round the street is so colorful and so much energy.

全部の人がフレンドリーで、 カラフルな街を歩いてるだけで元気になります。

Robot cafe, Tokyo tower in the morning. What did you see in Japan for the first time?

Lots of these masks that everyone is wearing walking around. Very different.

沢山の人がマスクをして歩いてました。 すごい違いを感じましたね。

Wondering what that means or if I should be wearing one.

僕をマスクしなきゃいけないのかなと考えました。

Escalator culture here. - What do you mean?

エスカレーター文化ですね。 ーそれはどういう意味ですか？

The fact that people line up neatly at one side of the escalator

人々がきっちりエスカレーターの片側に並んでるんです。

and then people walk on the other side.

もう片方は上り降り歩いてる人達。

And that changes from Tokyo and Kyoto.

しかも東京と京都は逆なんだよね。

Everything is clean. France is very dirty so it's very different.

街の全部の場所がすごく綺麗。 フランスは街が汚いから、すごく違う。

There is food everywhere.

どこに行っても食べ物があるんです。

For me it's perfect like the convenient stores and everything like this.

私にとってもう完璧です。 コンビニとか本当に便利過ぎます。

The shrine was interesting. We did the two bows, two claps and a bow again.

神社が面白いです。 「二礼二拍一礼」をやりました。

and said our prayer. We liked that. We left our prayers there.

願い事をして、祈りを残してきて、 そこがとても好きでした。

And Harajuku girls are over like living dollies. We love seeing

原宿の女の子は生きた人形見たいで、 見るのがとても楽しいです。

girls that look like you.

あなた見たいな女の子たち！

Everyone is so polite here!

全部の人がものすごく礼儀正しい！

Everyone is really kind and they are willing to help us.

みんな優しくて、いつでも助けてくれる！

Which is really nice because we are always lost, especially on the train.

私たちは電車で良く迷ったりするから 本当に助かります。

So that's probably my big shock.

つまり、それが私にとっての「ショック」ですね。

And the trains as well.

あと電車も！

We got very few trains in Melbourne and they are not as good as the trains here.

メルボルンにはほとんど電車がないし、 こんなに良い電車でもないです。

So that was the biggest shock for me. - What's good about the trains here?

そういった感じですね。 ー電車が良いとは、何が良いと思うんですか？

They are always so clean and fast and efficient and you can get anywhere you want

いつも清潔で、速くて、効率が良くて、 行きたい所どこへでも行けるからです。

We have gone across the country on the trains and it's amazing.

日本全国を電車で回れたので、 本当に素晴らしいと思います。

Such a good experience.

とても良い経験です。

No bins anywhere.

The trains are very busy.

People are very polite as well. We went to ...

Starbucks this morning and we had to take the tray and put it away yourself

今日朝スターバックスに行ったんですけど、 みんな自分でトレーを戻して、ゴミを捨ててました。

I thought that was very thoughtful.

これがすごく考え深いと思いました。

No bins? How long did you have to go looking for a bin?

It's very confusing. In Australia they are not as confusing.

複雑で、すごく混乱になります。 オーストラリアの電車はそんなに複雑じゃないです。

There is not as many lines either but there is a lot more stops.

そこまで沢山路線がなくて、 もっと駅がある感じです。

Too many stops, I remember. - Too many?

本当に駅が多すぎる。 ー多すぎる？

Yeah and stations are giant.

そう、そして駅が大きい。

One exit takes 10 minutes across the whole station.

一つの出口に辿り着くのに、 駅の中を10分歩いたりするとか。

There is only one station in Australia that is as big as...

オーストラリアでは、 こんなに大きい駅が一つしかないです。

... every single one here.

なのにここは全部の駅が大きい。

It's my first time here. Might sound weird but...

今回は私にとっての初めの日本です。 変なコメントかもしれないんですけど、

There are commercials everywhere, lit up posters and such.

ここは見渡す限りが広告でいっぱい。 ライトアップされたポスターとか、

I don't see that in Europe.

ヨーロッパにはないです。

And also people shouting at you on the streets to promote their shops

そして店の人が宣伝の為に道に出て、 大声でお客さんを捕まえようとしてる。

We don't have that. That was quite a surprise.

それもヨーロッパではないですね。 結構びっくりしました。

How was it to get shout at on the streets the first time?

街を歩いてて、店員さんに呼びかけられた時は 初めどんな気持ちでしたか？

After arriving in Japan, our first stop was Shibuya 109 department store

今回日本に着いて、最初の目的地が渋谷109で。

It was sale season and...

ちょうどセールスシーズンで…

it was a crazy information overflow.

情報の飛交いがもうカオスでしたね。

But I am getting used to it now.

でも今はもう慣れました。

It's my second time here so...

私は今回二度目の日本です。

What surprised me this time round was the food.

今回びっくりしたのは食べ物ですね。

We went to the Gudetama cafe...

ぐでたまカフェに行ったんですけど、

the food has much more variety compared to Germany.

食べ物の種類がドイツより遥か多くて、

Last time we didn't go to eat out, so we didn't get to experience that.

前回来た時は外食してなくて、 それを体験できなかったんですけど、

We focused on that this time. And the sales!

だから今回はそれをメインに。 後はセール！

There are so many sales, always!

ここはいつもセールをやってる！

We don't have it that much in Germany.

ドイツではあんまりセールとかないんです。

I was here once before, and remember looking for a place to get pizza

前日本に来た時に、 ピザ屋を探したのを覚えてるんですけど

but we couldn't find any. Now here we found so many Italian style restaurants.

その時は見つからなかったんです。 でも今回は沢山のイタリアンレスランがありました。

I liked it. It tastes different after all than back home.

とても好きでした。 イタリアでの味とは全く違うんですけど。

First time round, you couldn't find any pizza?

初めて来た時は、ピザが見つからなかったんですか？

Exactly. This time it's everywhere. Maybe I just missed them somehow.

そうなんですよ。なのに今回は至る所にあるんです。 私が見逃してたのかもしれません。

Is there anything that gave you a shock culture wise compared to Germany?

ドイツに比べて、 文化は何かショックな違いはありましたか？

The waiting lines for the train. You have to stand in line

電車を待つ行列ですね。 列になって並ばなきゃいけない事です。

and are not allowed to cut in line. In Germany first come first served.

割り込み禁止なところも。 ドイツでは早い者勝ちです。

Everyone just runs into the train.

みんなは一斉に電車に駆け込みます。

Here the lines split into right and left and that's where you go. Very organized.

ここでは列が左右に分かれて、真ん中から人が出て、 全部が凄くまとまっています。

But on the streets it's anarchy. Everyone tries to get through somehow.

でも街は無秩序で、みんな行きたいように歩きます。

Sometimes it's people walking left. But the train is what stood out the most.

時々左寄りでみんな歩くけど。 やっぱり電車が一番の衝撃でした。

We don't really have that.

ドイツにはないです。

To extend this, one thing that happened to us a lot.

もう一つよく起きる事があるんですけど、

I have the feeling Japanese people don't look out that much for Europeans.

日本人はヨーロッパ人を用心する感覚が、 あまりないと僕は感じます。

We were just walking our way, but they suddenly cut us short.

僕たちが歩いてる途中に、突然割り込んだりします。

Like "I am walking here now. You have to look out for yourself."

「私がこの道を歩いてるから、そっちが気をつけて。」 見たいな感じを示すんです。

From Europe I had the image that Japanese people are very kind

ヨーロッパでは、日本人は凄く優しいイメージで、

and very formal. But they also have their moments when they assert themselves.

凄くフォーマルです。 でも彼らもそういった譲れない瞬間がありますね。

And they go through with it too.

そしてそれをやり通します。

Everything looks like a manga sometimes.

時々全部が漫画の様に見えてきます。

Like uniforms.

制服とか。

School, I was expecting it to be different from what I see in manga.

漫画で読んだ日本の学校のイメージと 違うものを期待してたんですけど、

But it's quite similar.

でもかなりそのままでした。

Some things might remind us of an anime we watch, I agree.

色んな物が、アニメの中で見たのと重なります。

First time I saw a school uniform I was like "Sailor Moon? No wait school uniform!"

初めて中学生の制服を見た時、私は 「セーラームーン？いや違う、制服だ！」

The Trains. I think they are super busy.

電車です。かなりいっぱいだと思います。

Crowded? Many people? - Yeah!

混んでる？人がですか？ ーそう！

It's not the same in Thailand.

タイとは全く違います。

Everyone has to get nakes in the Onsen (hot springs)

温泉ではみんな裸にならなきゃ行けない事。

It's too embarrassing for me.

私には恥ずかし過ぎました。

Thai people are so shy when they get naked

タイではみんな裸になる事が凄く恥ずかしいです。

- Show skin? - Yeah in onsen.

肌を出す事ですか？ ーそうですね、温泉で。

In Onsen everyone has to be naked.

温泉では絶対裸にならなきゃ行けないんです。

And that's hard for you? - Yeah.

あたなにとっては難しいですか？ ーそうです。

I understand. The first time onsen is like ... "Oh dear..."

なるほど、初めての温泉は 「え、うそ…」みたいな感じですね。

She says smoking. - Smoking?

彼女はタバコだと言っています。 ータバコ？

In the restaurant.

レストランの中でです。

In Thailand are there more smokers or less smokers.

タイは日本に比べて喫煙者多いですか？

Less.

いいえ、少ないです。

The culture!

文化！

There is lots of different types of towns.

違うタイプの街がたくさんあります。

Like here where it's all mixed and lots of young people.

例えばここは若者が沢山いるミックスした場所で、

And then there is more traditional towns.

違う街ではもっと伝統な雰囲気であったり。

So the contrast between...

そのギャップですね…

The respect that people have and...

人々が持ってる敬意と、

Customer services. Food.

サービス精神と、食べ物。

The food is so different.

食べ物が全く違うし、

The people are more friendly.

人がもっとフレンドリーです。

Just the service is amazing.

サービスが本当の素晴らしいです。

Is the service that bad back home?

母国の方のサービスはそんなに悪いんですか？

It's good but Japanese people are over the top.

そっちも良いんですけど、 日本人のサービスが遥かに良すぎるからです。

- In a good way. - They're always smiling, you never see them in a bad mood.

ー良い感じなんです。ーいつでも笑顔で。 気分が悪い顔なんて見た事がないです。

The culture around manga and cartoons.

漫画とアニメの文化ですね。

In Australia, everyone things cartoons are for children.

オーストラリアのアニメは全部子供向けです。

The Manga and Anime culture in Australia is really underground.

オーストラリアでのアニメと漫画文化は、 全く主流ではなくて、

Over the last few years it's become more popular

ここの数年でやっと流行り始めたんですけど、

You don't realize how big it is in Japan.

日本での莫大さとは、比べものにもならないです。

Or drink bottle has its own character.

ドリンクにそれぞれのキャラクターがあって、

Or like ...

例えば、

Food will have its own characters and that kind of thing.

食べ物にもそれぞれのキャラクターがあったり、

Which is really incredible I think as well.

本当にすごく驚きました。

Lots of little characters on items and stuff.

アイテムや物に小さいキャラクターがあるし、

Even the post office and the keisatsu... police have a character.

郵便局とか警察署にまで、キャラクターがある。

We had to go to the police because our friend lost her passport.

友達がパスポートを失くしてしまって、 警察署に行ったんですけど、

They were so kind, I was overwhelmed.

みんな優しくて、すごく心温かったです。

The characters they had there, was really cute.

そこにあったキャラクターも、とても可愛いかった。

Did they find the passport in the end?

最後にパスポートは見つかったんですか？

Yes, we were so fortunate that someone handed it in.

はい、幸いなことに誰か拾ってくれたみたいです。

It was on our first night as well. We were going bananas.

日本に来て最初の夜だったんで、 本当にパニックしていました。

She lost it and someone handed it in. Was it in a purse or just a passport?

彼女が失くしてすぐ、誰かが見つけてくれたんですね。 パスポートは、財布に入れてたんじゃないんですか？

She actually lost her entire purse.

そうですね、実は財布ごと失くしたんです。

We were walking between the hotel and restaurant we were going to

ホテルとレストランの間を沢山往復して、

trying to find it.

探したんです。

We couldn't find it anywhere. The streets are so clean as well

でもどこにもなくて。 街もすごく綺麗でした。

Nobody picked it up to throw it in a bin like that.

誰も拾ってゴミ箱に捨てたりしてなかったので、

Someone has probably taken it, and we were worried it was stolen.

誰かが拾って行ったと思ったんです。 だから中身を盗まれてないかが心配でした。

and that we'd have to go to the embassy because we were in Hiroshima

しかもその時は広島に居たので、 大使館に行かなければならいと思って、

we worried we'd have to go back to Tokyo.

最悪東京に戻らなきゃ行けないって心配してて、

We ended up reporting it to the police and somebody had handed it in.

でもとりあえず警察署に行ってたら、 誰かがもう届けてくれてました。

We got it sorted in a matter of hours, which is really fortunate.

数時間以内に取り戻せたんです、本当に幸いです。

That's amazing! That's a real good thing about Japanese culture.

信じられないですよ！ これが日本の文化の良さだと思います。

We didn't speak any Japanese. I only know 'arigatou gozaimasu' the basics.

私たちは日本語が喋れないけど、 「ありがとうございます」だけは知ってます。

The police were very helpful. It was incredible.

警察に本当にお世話になりました。 信じられない体験でした。

We asked foreigners what culture shock they had when they came to Japan

今回は外国人に日本に来た時に受けた カルチャーショックについて聞きました！

When I came for the very first time I came as student on a school exchange

私が初めて日本に来たのは、 交換留学の学生としての時でした。

What I was surprised about is how strict some of the parents were.

私は日本の親の厳しさにびっくりしてました。

One of the parents was like "The whole of Ikebukuro, everything is dangerous"

その中で、池袋は全部危ない！と言ってる親もいて、

You are not allowed out in Ikebukuro because everything is so dangerous.

池袋に近づいては行けないと禁じられて、

Even walking past a lingerie shop she would be like "Don't look!"

ランジェリーショップを通るだけでも、 「見たらダメ！」と言うんです。

It's dangerous!" I was like... That is very strict.

「危ないから！」 とにかく、すごく厳しかったです。

But then again you have some more relaxed parents as well.

でも普通にリラックスした優しい親もいました。

That's one of the things that surprised me as well as age in Japan.

もう一つ驚いたことは、日本での「年齢」感覚です。

Age is very important because you have the senpai kohai relationship

先輩や後輩と言った人間関係があるから、 日本では年齢はすごく大事です。

You need to respect your elders, you need to care for your youngers

自分より年上の人を尊重して、 自分より年下の人を可愛がること。

By the age you are you get classed into a certain group of people.

年齢によって特定なグループに入ったりします。

If you are older, people will treat you differently.

もしあなたがその中で年上だったら、 人からは違う扱いをされます、

Even though you might not want that in the first place.

例え自分がそう望んでいなくても。

So those were a couple of things that shocked me a little bit

こう行ったことが私にとってのショックでしたね。
