Have you ever heard of World Oceans Day (WOD)?

世界海洋デー（WOD）をご存知ですか？

The idea for WOD came from a meeting at the United Nations in 1992.

WODのアイデアは、1992年に国連で行われた会議から生まれました。

It's not a public holiday,

祝日ではありません。

but people around the world now celebrate this special day on June 8 every year.

しかし、今では世界中の人々が毎年6月8日にこの特別な日を祝っています。

Oceans cover 70% of our planet.

海は地球の70％を占めています。

They were once rich in fish and plants,

かつては魚や植物が豊富だった。

but now they are in serious trouble.

が、今は大変なことになっています。

Garbage, oil spills, and overfishing

ゴミ、油の流出、乱獲

have made the number of ocean fish and plants much lower than before.

のおかげで、海の魚や植物の数は以前に比べてかなり少なくなりました。

If we don't beat the clock and fix the problem, a lot of sea life will be gone soon.

時間に負けず、問題を解決しないと、すぐに多くの海の生物がいなくなってしまいます。

To save the world's oceans, people celebrate WOD.

世界の海を救うために、人々はWODを祝う。

On this special day,

この特別な日に

they hold movie festivals to teach the public about the beauty of the oceans.

彼らは海の美しさを一般の人に伝えるために映画祭を開催しています。

They also clean up the beaches in their areas.

また、彼らの地域のビーチの清掃も行っています。

By celebrating WOD,

WODを祝うことで

people not only learn a lot about oceans but also start to make them cleaner.

人は海のことをたくさん学ぶだけでなく、海をきれいにすることにも着手しています。

After all, we only have one Earth, don't we?
