A very warm welcome to today's lesson,my name is Rima and today's lesson is gonna give you
a lot of knowledge about pronouncing certain names of food at the same time it could make
you hungry well I have with me a list of food names which we end up saying absolutely wrong
so what I am gonna do is I am gonna help you correct the pronunciation of each word here
which happens to be name of one of my favourite food items
let’s see the first one and the first one belongs to the berry family meaning it is
a fruit ok it is spelt with a "P" but let me tell you that the "p" is silent and lot
of people call this fruit rasp-berry no there is no rasp in raspberry because that is absolutely
wrong I must tell you that this is pronounced as rasberry ok so its ras-berry that’s right
so the correct pronunciation is ras-berry it’s a fruit its red in colour it’s a
berry it’s a very nutritious and yummy and my favourite actually is raspberry ice-cream
ok.
Moving forward I have somebody which is actually from a "Bean" family that’s right cocoa
beans are famous but is it really cocoa? no ... you have to make sure that "A' is silent
and pronunciation is "coco" that’s right coco beans which is the mother and father
of chocolate my most favourite thing in the world so cocoa is also a drink so when you
grind these beans and actually make a hot beverage out of it it’s called a hot cup
of cocoa but always remember never call it cocoa because the pronunciation is coco and
the "a" is silent. Moving on we have somebody all the way from
Italy that’s right Italy is famous for this starter a started means something that serves
at the beginning of a meal it’s kind of small in size and it something that gets you
started with your meal it’s an appetizer almost and this is a dish which is made using
a bread and tomatoes sometimes cheese but definitely garlic and onions ok and this is
now one would call it " bruschetta " because of the "S" but the pronunciation here is completely
different this word or this dish is pronounced as “brus-ke-tta” so its brusketta not
bruschetta as one would say it its actually brusketta, so the next time you go to your
favourite Italian restaurant and you are ordering for this starter you should say " can I have
a portion of brusketta and I am sure that your pronunciation ion will get admired .
Moving on we have somebody that makes us cry a lot that if your chopping it on daily bases
now what are these really ? look at the "O" there onion if you chop them you know it makes
you cry or are they un-nions well I must tell you there is a letter although there is a
"O" in the spelling these are onions as in the pronunciations goes un-nion and these
are from the vegetable family the shallot family actually they are used to flavour all
kind of food all kind of cuisine absolutely yummy when they are cooked but when they are
raw they make you cry but don’t let the pronunciations make you cry its un-nion and
not o-nion always always remember that.
Moving on we have somebody from the cheese family now this is very cheesy cheese its
very difficult to pronounce look at the spelling ok its par which is par , me which is may
san-her is a little difficult to pronounce because in the pronunciation its said as zon
which is par-me-zon so the pronunciation happens to be par-me-zon and not parmesan as a lot
of people say it out because if you say as parmesan it kind of remind me of Japanese
gentleman and that definitely not the pronunciation the pronunciation is parmesan ok so if you
what some you know grated parmesan cheese on your pizza remember its par-me-zon the
sound with a "Z" and it’s not the sound with the "S" and in the spelling ok.
let’s see the let food name awee who doesn’t like a dish of this in wonderful melting cheesy
sauce again all the way from Italy we have a dish that’s used making different thing
you can make spaghetti you can use bucatini you can use red sauce you can use white sauce
you can use olive oil what am I talking about well I am talking about "Pasta" ok and not
pess -ta as lot of people say it out to be not pess-ta its pasta ok so pasta is made
using lots of vegetables sometime meat a lots of sauces and it’s a wonderful wholesome
awesome warm dish.
Moving on we have a super food in our list now why is this food called super food it’s
called a super food because it’s supposed to be extremely healthy extremely nutrition,
so if you are on a diet or if you are trying to eat healthy, eat clean a lot of people
eat this and it actually has its origins at middle eat ok so if you look at the spelling
on this food name its "Quinoa" ok and one would end up as pronouncing it as qi-noa thinking
"U" is silent qi-noa but actually it’s not pronounced like that its pronounced as
keen--wah so instead of saying quinoa its kee-noo-wah , quinoa is the correct pronunciation
and keen-wah is a fantastic dish again very healthy can be used to replace any grain such
as rice its eaten with vegetables and mostly is enjoyed in Greece and middle eastern countries
so that quinoa for you.
Moving on we have somebody all the way from Mexico don’t you just love spicy amazing
Mexican food well I honestly enjoy and cherish it and if you have eaten Mexican food you
must have definitely ordered yourself a portion of tortilla or is it not tortilla it’s definitely
not totilla because the "ll" here is absolutely silent ok and the pronunciation is tawh-tee-uh
and it’s not tor-cia its tawh-tee-uh so yes its tortilla which is made out of flour
can be very very amazing and healthy and delicious when stuffed with the right vegetables right
kind a meat ok so its tortilla with the "ll" being silent.
Up next we have a nut that every ones favourite ok we make mocha out of it we make oil out
of it its used in beauty products, it’s great for the tummy and what is it exactly
it is “almond” that right the pronunciation is “a-mand” because the "L" here is silent
I am sure it’s getting very confusing for you with all the silent letters don’t you
worry at the end I am gonna make you say all of these words here with me one more time.
For now we need to move on to the fish family now all those people who enjoy their sea food
will have definitely eaten this fish and again over here "L" is silent which means the pronunciation
is sam-mn ok sam-mn . Salmon is a fish it’s a deliciously enjoyed by many and here the
pronunciation is sam-mn and not salmon as like a lot of people like end up saying it
that way but absolutely not correct.
Moving on ok now this ones really tricky ok I must tell you how this is made so chickpeas
which are really high in estragon really high in nutrition are actually ground soaked and
ground and you get this beautiful yummy paste which is enjoyed by people all over the world
and if you look at the spelling a lot of people end up calling it hu-muse or hum -muse but
I must tell you the pronunciation is a little tricky pay attention its hoo-mas ok it hoo
as in the "U" is pronounced as double "o" ok so hoo and mus and the " U" here is pronounces
as an "A" so it’s a portion of hoomas not hum-mus not humose ok, I think this one by
far the trickiest so far so next time you go to middle eastern place remember you are
ordering a portion of hoomas its sounds good actually doesn’t it ?
Moving on one for fantastic item from Italy now this is form of a rolled pasta ok and
its pronounced as "Gnocchi " so the "G" here is silent and there is an invisible "Y" here
which doesn’t appear in the spelling but definitely comes in the production its nyawk-kee
ok and nyawk-kee it is amazing when its stuffed with lots of cheese and Spinach and mushrooms
but remember its nyawk-kee and not no- key that’s definitely not ga-noky because that
will be a big blunder so that gnocchi for you.
And moving on what do we have here well we have something all the way from France something
that a great breakfast food very popular enjoyed with cheese butter chocolate mushrooms whatever
that you want to stuff it with and this is a bakery item and its pronounced as so one
would say it’s a croissant or a croi-sant but it’s actually a kaw-sant ok so the "R"
is silent there is an invisible "W" that appears in the pronunciation its kaw-sant, you might
find it weird to say it in the beginning but trust me once you get used to it the pronunciation
will become delicious the kaw-sant itself so it’s a French word a French word which
got adopted into English and its very very tricky to pronounce so kaw-sant it is not
croi-sant like you would say it but you have to pronounced entire spelling as you say it
And the last one on my item is a spice a very yummy spice can be used to make dessert and
savoury foods and it actually is in the shape of a star. Which is why it’s called a star
not a-niece se but star-ann-iss ok so star anise is pronounced in this way not in the
way one would stay star-a-niece or star-a-nice none of that is correct its actually star-ann-nis
it’s a spice and its really really amazing .
Well that was my list of food which we end up saying wrong almost all the time I think
this lesson has been quite a lesson for me as well so I am gonna make sure that I remember
these pronunciations and start using them from this moment on. Would you like to go
over the pronunciation one more time with me? I am sure you would so let’s do this
from the top ok. Its raspberry (ras-berry) and not rasp-berry,it’s
not cocoa (coca) its co-co,it’s not bruschetta (brus-she-ta) its brusketta ,a very delicate
pronunciation to brus-ketta ,it’s not oh-nions it’s un-nion(onions) for that matte,r it’s
not parmesan its parmezon with a z in the pronunciation, its not pesta its pasta ok,it’s
not qio-nua its keen-wah (quinoa) say it with me keen-wah sounds really nice right , and
there is no tortilla its doesn’t exist its tor-tia ok and there are no almonds its a-mands
similarly no salmon its sam-mn with the "L" being silent. now this one the trickiest one
ok I am gonna give you a prize if you get this one right it’s not hum mus it’s not
hou-muse its hoomas ok and then we have gnocchi when in the "G" is silent and there is an
invisible "y" in the pronunciation there is croissant ok not kraw-sant its kaw-sant and
of course the last one it’s not star a- niece its star ann-nis ok
I really hope that you have learned all the pronunciations keep practicing them keep perfecting
them because after all its food and one got to take food really seriously.
Well I really hope that you enjoyed todays lesson I am gonna be back with you with yet
another lesson very very soon till then subscribe to our channel and keep watching.
