There are thousands of izakayas all around Japan, and each of them have their own unique charm. We're gonna take you to our favorite one today. (Intro music) Simon: "Kounta!"(Counter seat) Host: "Ok!" Simon "Ok!" Host: "Kounta...Counter baby!" Simon: "Counter baby!" Simon: "Aw yeah!" (Music) So here's a menu. We don't know what most of this stuff is right here, and you shouldn't be intimidated either. What you need to learn how to say is "Osusume wa" which is kind of like, "What is your recommendation?" Today they they recommended the tuna spare rib with a marmalade. Martina: "There was only two pieces!" Simon: "There were two" Martina : "And then we got one of them." Simon: "And then we grabbed this one, we're gonna eat it I don't even know what it is, but they recommended it" Martina:"I think it's tuna,with marmalade!" Simon:"I think it's tuna with marmalade, and with some wasabi on the side" Oh man! And this is why you're supposed to ask them for their specials Martina:"Oh my god" 'Cuz they know what's good This is great You know when you like slow cook pork, and it just like falls off the bone for like a pulled pork sandwich? This is the equivalent but with tuna. Oh wow So good! Chef: "So good!" So good! Martina: "Oh my god!" That's good Martina: "Amazing oishii" Amazing oishii, thank you What's great about izakayas is that, don't think of it like gross dirty bar food that's just like fried and disgusting Izakaya food can be fantasic and amazing and that's why we love this place This wasn't here the last time we we were here Simon: "No" They just like change it up all the time. Last time we had like specialty pork *gasp* Simon: "Oh my god" So good Simon: "This is so tender" Martina: "I can't keep talking or Simon is going to eat it all behind my back" Simon: "No, no explain more!" Martina: "No you should explain your-" Simon: "About the history of izakayas and all that dumb s#!t before i- Martina: "You should talk about your love for...stuff" (easy listening music) Chef: "Burst open!" (music stops) Actually they have no idea why Simon: "Nobody knows why they actually do this" Martina: "It's like historically lost somewhere but either way it's usually like the sign of like a really generous shop (Classical music) Simon: "A little more?" Simon: "You see that right there? Dried delicious homemade bacon" Martina: "Homemade bacon!" And it's great! Simon: "Oh yeah" Simon: "Oh beautiful!" (Martina was in amazement) Simon: "Oh thank you!" Martina: "Arigatou gozaimasu!" Martina: "Thank you!" Just hanging on a clothespin! Right there! Martina: "Seasoned perfectly!" Simon: "Look at that gloss! Martina: "Cheers!" Simon: "Here we go" (Small bell chime) It's so good! "It's just so good!" Ohhhh! Chef: "Fish bones!" So wonderful! Arigatou gozaimasu! Simon: "We got a keychain!" Martina: "My love!" Chef: (Japanese) Smelly Simon: "Cute smell!" "Good smell!" Martina: "That's ok" Awwww Martina: My tuna memory bone! When is the last time you went to a restaurant and got tuna bone as a keychain? Martina: "Look at how beautiful it is!" Simon: "Never! Never!" You're going to be on your bike with that keychain, and cats are going to be like chasing you! *Bike bell rings* (laughter) Simon: "There's a bike bell" Martina: "Edamame in the house!" Simon: "Why is there a bike bell on their lid? I don't understand" "Why not?" is the question But you don't question it, you just accept it. You can be like "Edamame is ready! Brring brring!" (upbeat music) (Martina chanting)"Tamago, tamago!" Chef: "Yellow carpet!" Chef: "Double!" Simon and Martina: "Double yellow carpet!" (chef yelling) Simon: "Ok!" Chef: "Chiezu!"(Cheese) Simon and Martina: "Chiezu!" (chef yelling more) (guests ooohing and ahhhing) Chef :(Japanese) "Let's roll this together" Martina: "Ohhhh making it even" Simon: "Ok" Chef: "My assistant" Simon: "Oh, hey hello" Martina: "Good luck!" Chef: (Japanese) Let's do this! Chef: "Here we go!" (chef cheering) Simon: "Beautiful!" Martina: "Wow!" Simon: "Oh thank you!" Martina: "Arigatou gozaimasu!" When I think of pub food, I just think about like chicken wings and french fries.... Simon: "Egg!" Martina: "Egg, with pork and cheese!" It feels like I'm actually pretending to be healthy while I drink tons of booze! Simon: "Egg, cheese and pork!" (Happy eating sounds) Simon: "That pork!" Martina: "So good!" Simon: "So good!" Martina: "So soft!" Simon: "This is like that pork that goes in ramen, that super soft ball of pork" Martina: "And don't be afraid of the ginger, it adds like a totally different dimension when you add it to something greasy? So good! (smooth jazz music) (Chef cheering) (guests cheering and chatting) Oh, ok, thank you, thank you, thank you! (neighbor talking) Simon: "Oh! Arigatou gozaimasu!" (smooth jazz music) Chef:"Yakisoba!" Simon: "Oh yes!" Chef: "Oh yes!" Simon: "Look at this perfect egg" Martina: "You see this egg? Look at it!" Simon: "You see how nice this egg is? This is like one of those like 3D plastic rendered of an egg."
